The Enemy Within!

Optical fibre has proven itself to be a reliable, hi-bandwidth medium

“Apparent” reliability has allowed bad habits to develop

Significant changes to network demands undermine “apparent” reliability

The absence of “end-caps” is symptomatic of bad practice

End-caps do not “in themselves” prevent contamination

Problems may be more deep-seated

Contamination control presents an administrative challenge

ContagionTHIS SLIDE CONTAINS INFORMATION AND IMAGES PROVIDED BY JDSU

FAILURE TO INSPECT UNTIL PROBLEMS OCCURCAN CAUSE PERMANENT DAMAGE

After mated contaminated is removed, pits and chips may remain in the opticalfibre rendering the contamination outcomes permanent

INSTALLATION

TESTING

OPERATION

Assume anything that arrives in plastic bag to be “clean”Only inspect on-site termination work

Never inspect

until test results begin to show systematic problems

Assume anything that has an “end-cap” to be “clean”

If a fault occurs following connection:

Give the plug a quick “polish”

Choose a new connection from the paneluntil you find one that works
