Step Away From the Electronic Device(s)!Put the electronic devices down and pick up a conversation with your family!Too often I find myself buried in my smart phone, connected to the world but not my family.
As my own kids get older (8 and 10 years old), I see them mimic me: faces down, thumbs a blur already texting away. It’s time like these when I make the decision to turn off my worldwide umbilical cord and ask my kids to do the same. Their answer is always the same “Oh Dad, Really?!?”
Use The Parents Handbook and sit and talk, ride a chairlift together, go snowshoeing, ice skating, sledding, visit the children’s museum, go bowl-ing, talk at dinner, swim, create arts and crafts. What ever you do, be “in the moment” with your family. You’ll be glad you did.
Sincerely,
Alan M. SandbergPublisheralan@theparentshandbook.com

Frosted leaves and crunchy ground awaits us most mornings; winter is upon us! Soon snowy activities will fill our days. What else is in store for Roaring Fork Valley visitors and resi-dents this season at ACES?
Celebrate the coming of winter with the Norse Elves, Sven and Olaf, who visit ACES every December! Donning their traditional garb the elves visit the nature preserve at Hallam Lake and the barnyard at Rock Bottom Ranch. Bringing glad tidings and rosy noses of the North, the elves make return trips, year after year, to share their magic and love for the natural world! Olaf plans to pass through Aspen on Wednesday, December 14 at Hallam Lake. Sven will drop by Rock Bottom Ranch in Basalt on Thursday, December 15. Join ACES and the elves for a magi-cal winter afternoon!
There is always fun to be had at ACES! Throughout the winter ACES Naturalists lead guided snowshoe tours on Aspen Mountain and at Ashcroft in the Castle Creek Valley! Both a snowshoe and ski tours are offered at Snowmass Mountain. Meander through wild places in the middle of the ski areas, while learn-ing about winter habitats and inhab-itants, ecological and geologic histo-ries of Aspen and much more!
Winter Comes
Alive! at The Aspen Center for
Environmental Studies
At Hallam Lake, a 25-acre Nature Preserve and Educational Center in the heart of Aspen, visitors can traipse along the snowy path and discover the plant and animal com-munities that gather at the lake throughout the winter. During the evenings in the winter ACES offers weekly slideshows highlighting sto-ries and naturalist knowledge from local adventurers and specialists.
Don’t forget about Rock Bottom Ranch, a 113-acre wildlife preserve, educational center and working ranch between the Roaring Fork River and the base of Mount Sopris! Visitors to the ranch can lend hand in the barnyard and learn ranching skills like candle making and home canning. Be sure to take a stroll by RBR’s beautiful wetlands, spring fed ponds and cottonwood bottomlands.

Meet an Energy Coach!
NOW DON’T BE SILLY!NOW DON’T BE SILLY!
Parents can create better futures for their kids by bringing energy effi-ciency solutions into their homes. Garfield Clean Energy is a county-wide program that offers “energy coaching” to help parents and households, businesses, and govern-ments save energy and improve the comfort and safety of their homes and buildings.
If you live in Garfield County, your town and the county are partners in this effort! The three parts of the Challenge are simple:
1. Sign up for the Garfield Clean Energy Challenge (which is run by CLEER). By signing up for the Garfield Clean Energy Challenge (at www.garfieldcleanenergy.org), you’ll get free energy coaching and be entered in drawings for prizes.
2. Get an energy assessment (of your home or commercial building) by a professional to see where improve-ments can be made. Most buildings leak heat in winter and cool air in summer, wasting hundreds of dol-lars on conditioning the air, and which can lead to poor indoor air quality. CLEER’s free energy coach-ing can help you get rebates from utilities and other sources that often cover most or all of the assessment.
3. Perform an efficiency upgrade, which will improve the “energy per-formance” of your home or build-ing. Simple things like beefing up attic insulation, wrapping hot water pipes, tuning up HVAC equipment, and air-sealing (e.g. caulking) can make it safer and save you money. In fact, many of the upgrades are eligible for rebates from utilities and other sources, significantly lowering out-of-pocket costs.
CLEER coached Ron Mittleider, a Silt Mesa homeowner, through an audit and energy upgrades (air-sealing and better insulation), and the results are impressive. He has been saving 20 to 40 percent on energy costs every month since. Ron is one of hundreds of Garfield County citizens benefit-ing from the program.
Contact a Garfield Clean Energy/CLEER energy coach today, join the Garfield Clean Energy Challenge, and start saving money. Call 970-704-9200 or visit www.garfieldcleanenergy.org.

Organizations like Colorado Animal Rescue (C.A.R.E.) help saves thou-sands of homeless and abandoned pets each year. Some of those ani-mals will be adopted and some will live out their days at the shelter sur-rounded by their fellow furry friends and getting attention from the animal lovers who visit the shelter.
Make the most of your winter day off the slopes by giving one of our dogs-in-need some much deserved human interaction and playtime. Even if you are unable to make a permanent home for our four-legged friends, they
still love to spend a day away from the shelter along side a loving human companion, romping in the snow or otherwise accompanying you on your winter outing.
And if you’re an out-of-towner here on a short stay, what better way to fill the longing for that puppy you had to leave back home than to give shelter dog the day of his life! For some dogs, daily outings with pet-loving volun-teers are as close as they’ll come to feeling the comfort of a forever home. Visit our shelter and make Rover’s day – today!

The newest and most noteworthy addition to Pitkin County’s inven-tory of open space is the 845 acre parcel between the Aspen airport and Brush Creek, from Highway 82 to Snowmass Village. This spine of land known at first as the Droste property was being renamed in a public naming contest at time of publication. It is one of the most ambitious open space purchases in Pitkin County’s history. It took a partnership between Pitkin County, the Town of Snowmass Village, The City of Aspen, The Aspen Valley Land Trust and Great Outdoors Colorado to conserve this incredible property for wildlife and people.
Officially open to the public last spring, this property not only offers incredible views of Aspen, Snowmass, all four of the area’s ski resorts and the surrounding Elk and Sawatch mountain ranges, it is a critical habitat for wildlife, includes rare plant species and serves as an
Pitkin County’s Prized Purchase
elk migration corridor. The property is also a critical link that connects several other open space properties between Aspen and Snowmass to create a 2,500 acre mountain park. Visitors and residents can now explore many types of ecosystems and step into wild lands that are literally out the door of their houses and hotels.
The park is a great destination for families with various picnic tables on the ridgeline with views in all directions. The entire property is perfect for recreation but also pro-vides a diversity of ecosystems to explore with kids and a variety of opportunities to experience the hab-itat and wildlife that live in the area. After a successful season with thou-sands of visitors over summer and autumn, the parcel is closed for the winter to provide critical winter range and an elk migration corridor. It opens again May 15, 2012.

Does your child suffer from aller-gies? It is more common than you think. Typical signs of the presence of allergies include; chronic infec-tions (i.e. ear, sinus, throat), diges-tive problems, eczema, asthma, restless sleep, emotional and behavioral problems.
Allergies can be inherited but they are also a symptom of the high toxic load in our environment. Common environmental toxins can deplete the immune system and create a hypersensitive ner-vous system.
Avoidance of your suspected allergens is helpful, but some-times not possible which is why NAET (Nambudripad’s Allergy
Elimination Techniques) have been a great solution for many families.
After an allergen is cleared using NAET, the patient can be exposed to the allergen without further reaction.
NAET techniques can be used for all types of allergies and sensitivi-ties, including foods, environmental/seasonal, animal and chemical aller-gens. The protocol involves a series of acupressure sessions that gradu-ally strengthen the nervous system and desensitize the immune system.
To learn more about NAET go to: www.NAET.com or contact Dr. Benson at Two Rivers Natural Health (970) 948-9128 to learn more about natural approaches to allergies.
Allergies in Children “Every time I go to the dentist, I have a new problem!” Is this you? You brush, you floss, you rinse, you seal, you use fluoride. You’re certain it’s your grandfather’s fault that you have “soft” teeth, or maybe it was that new baby that sucked all the calcium out of your teeth. Well, be comforted that neither is true and that with little effort or change to your daily routine, you can get relief from the onslaught of dental demise.
The disease of caries (decay) is con-tagious. Children are first exposed to it from thier mothers as babies. Let’s face it, mothers and babies swap spit. But, kids can also pick it up, by sharing spoons, candy, toys, pacifiers or any other object that has
been in someone else’s mouth and even kissing, the big one for teens and adults. Now what?! The reason your dentist is so adamant about children getting in even as babies, is so that the risk of the disease can be assessed and treated BEFORE the teeth show decay, which needs to be filled. Yes, the infection is there long before a tooth gets decay and it remains to cause more decay after a tooth is fixed.
What can be done? Treatment is very specific to each individual, however; the common protocol looks like this and may include all or some of the following as needed:Fill or treat any decayed teeth.Seal any healthy teeth remaining to prevent “seeding” (concentration of the infection in the inaccessible grooves of the teeth.)
Kill the carries “germs” using a minty rinse (rx) and chewing deli-cious gum or sucking on small can-dies that starve the bugs and affect their ability to colonize on the teeth.Put MI paste on your teeth before bed, to rebuild and strengthen the enamel on your teeth. This also kills germs, buffers acid in the mouth, and desensitizes teeth. WOW! Quite a bit of benefit for just a little paste.
There is much more for us to reveal to you to help you address, curb or eliminate your specific dental con-cerns. At Premier Dental Health, we are the Prevention Specialists, armed with just the products and information you need for a brighter dental future.

What Exactly is Mountain Sickness?Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) represents a condition that devel-ops when one is unable to adjust to the lower oxygen concentration associated with altitude travel. Most symptoms develop within 12-48 hours of one’s arrival. When a person fails to adjust to the change in altitude, the following symptoms are often noted: head-ache, insomnia, dizziness, fatigue, poor appetite, nausea, vomiting, and shortness of breath.
Should I be Concerned if I Suffer From Acute Mountain Sickness? While symptoms often resolve within 2-5 days of arrival and acclimatization, progression of this illness may lead to high alti-tude cerebral edema (HACE), a condition associated with clumsi-ness, confusion, and unrespon-siveness. Lung involvement may lead to high altitude pulmonary edema (HAPE), a condition asso-ciated with poor exercise toler-ance, shortness of breath, cough, chest discomfort, and a low grade fever. Both HACE and HAPE rep-resent true medical emergencies, for those who suffer from severe altitude illness risk death if not
appropriately diagnosed and treated. One should not dismiss any concerning medical issue as a benign complication of altitude-related travel.
What Can I do to Prevent Acute Mountain Sickness?Remember this fact when travelling to altitude: a higher incidence of acute mountain sickness is associ-ated with a quicker rate of ascent. Take your time when traveling to the mountains and consider spend-ing a night or two at a lower eleva-tion if you are prone to AMS. Once you arrive please allow yourself time to adapt to the altitude. Don’t forget that significant physical activity and alcohol use interferes with one’s ability to achieve accli-matization. If you fail to note improvement in your symptoms, please seek medical attention for significant altitude-related illnesses are both preventable and treatable if recognized early.

Vaudeville was popular in the United States and Canada from the early 1880s until the early 1930s. The shows were specifically designed to entertain audiences of all ages. Each performance was made up of a series of separate, unrelated acts including dancers, comedians, trained animal acts, magicians, illustrated songs, jugglers and basi-cally anything that entertains. There were many popular movie stars like Mae West, W.C. Fields, Laurel & Hardy and the Marx Brothers who got their start on the Vaudeville Circuit traveling around the country performing in beautiful live theatres.
Modern Vaudeville is still based on the original concept with a com-bination of entertaining acts that include more current parodies and themes using a local troupe of multi-talented professional enter-tainers. The Glenwood Vaudeville Revue takes this concept to a whole other level with a focus on comedy using rapid fire jokes and running gags, coupled with creative visual

surprises, quality musical numbers and original audience participation pieces that has the audience feel-ing like they are actually part of the show. Classic Vaudeville characters will be performing some of their best material along with clever tap dance numbers and unique vocal arrangements, all with a creative twist. These shows have a way of captivating audiences of all ages allowing families of many genera-tions to enjoy a night out together knowing all will be thoroughly entertained.
The Glenwood Vaudeville Revue is open nearly year round with three unique shows each year, including an outstanding Holiday Show that is sure to bring the spirit of the holi-days to one and all.

This coming May there is going to be a change in the grocery stores from Aspen to Carbondale. The City of Aspen along with Basalt and Carbondale all have banned plastic bags from grocery stores in their jurisdictions and imposed a 20 cent fee on paper bags. The combined effort is a strong move to protect the environment, as well as to send an environmental message to the Valley that single-use items, like plastic bags aren’t necessary.
All three communities are hosts to visitors from around the world and this policy will hopefully inform guests that this Valley is a leader in sustainability and strongly values the natural beauty of snowy moun-tains in the winter, wildflowers in the summer, healthy ecosystems and an environment free from unnecessary waste.
The 20-cent bag fee will go to both reimburse grocers for the costs of
the program as well as education and outreach on the issue which will include providing free cloth bags to as many people as possible. There is potential in these jurisdictions to go beyond just banning the plastic bags at grocery stores and addressing other retail venues that use plastic bags in the future.
Leading up to the May 1, 2012, implementation date, the hope is customers will prepare themselves by stocking up on inexpensive reusable bags that they will bring with them every time they go shopping so they get into the habit before the law takes effect.
The ban does not include bags used for produce, bulk items, frozen food, flowers, baked goods, prescription drugs, dry-cleaning or newspapers.
More information is available at www.wastefreeroaringfork.org.

Aspen’s only professional theatre is beginning its 29th year of high-qual-ity productions, featuring musicals, comedies and plays, with a special focus on family entertainment. Starring Broadway professionals and local artists alike, Theatre Aspen (TA) received the 2009 “Outstanding Regional Theatre” Henry Award, and has garnered multiple Ovation Awards and nominations from the Denver Post.
In 2011, the new Hurst Theatre was unveiled in Rio Grande Park, where the theatre season runs from June through August. TA has also enjoyed an elevated national profile; Tony and Emmy Award-winning actress Sandy Duncan starred in Steven Dietz’s comedy Becky’s New Car. A cast of singers and dancers with credits from Broadway shows like Wicked, Hairspray and Ragtime, as well as the Radio City Rockette’s Christmas Spectacular brought the Broadway-bound new musical Vices: A Love Story to life. Our summer production of Annie was so suc-cessful, we brought it back for an encore in the Wheeler Opera House this December, featuring guest star Aileen Quinn, who played the origi-nal “Annie” in the film version of the musical! (Dec 16 – 23).
Explore our Imagination Station. Gifted to Theatre Aspen as part of last year’s “I TA” Campaign for a new theatre tent and lobby, we had a special play station designed just for kids! Our portable Imagination Station opens on all sides, revealing a costume closet, a stage with its own curtain and an art wall for kids
to express themselves with cray-ons, chalk and magnetic letters and words. It’s the perfect place to play while waiting for the show to start, or at intermission.
We are also proud to keep our tick-ets affordable for families. While premium seats help us support our mission, our children’s ticket prices have remained the same since 2007! And we offer group rates and local’s discounts as well.
Theatre Aspen School (TAS) offers year-round programming, with after-school classes as well as our popular summer camps, for ages 5 – 18 from June through August. (See opposite page).
TAS invites professional actors from the TA main stage to teach master classes and observe the students at work. Professionals offer advice and anecdotes about their own careers and training as well as tips for audi-tioning and creating characters.
Our young actors are uniquely pre-pared for a future in any field and for a successful college experience, because they learn the skills of communication, risk-taking and col-laboration that lead to higher self-esteem and more self-confidence.
For more information about Theatre Aspen, visit theatreaspen.org or to learn about our education programs, contact Director of Education Graham Northrup at (970) 925-9313 or visit theatreaspen.org/education. Tickets for our productions are available at aspenshowtix.com.

In 1877, Norwegian sea captain Helly Juell Hansen created the world’s first waterproof fabrics and began sell-ing them to his sea-soaked brethren. Ever since then, his company, Helly Hansen, has dedicated itself to pro-viding working professionals, from sailors to ski patrollers, with unsur-passed waterproof breathable outer-wear capable of withstanding year after year of heavy use in the world’s harshest climates.
It’s a philosophy that Helly Hansen honored in 2006 with the creation of a dedicated resort uniform initiative designed to provide some of North America’s biggest mountains with a single-brand solution for every seg-ment of operations. Helly Hansen offers customized uniforms for ski patrollers, mountain operations per-sonnel, ski and snowboard instruc-tors, ambassadors, and customer service staff.
“We view patrollers, instructors and the rest of resort profession-als as ambassadors for our brand. We want to make sure they’re pro-
tected, enabled, and confident when they get out on the mountain each day,” said Erik Burbank, global vice president of marketing. “We strive to meet and exceed each mountain’s unique needs.”
The program is an overwhelming success. In the past three years, numerous resorts, including Aspen/Snowmass, the Resorts of the Canadian Rockies, and Squaw Valley established their own custom uni-form programs with the Norwegian-based manufacturer.
Helly Hansen’s early success has ushered in its largest uniform and marketing partnership yet. In 2011, Vail Resorts signed a five-year part-nership with Helly Hansen, making it the official uniform and apparel provider for 15,000 mountain profes-sionals working at its six world-class mountain resorts of Vail, Beaver Creek, Breckenridge, Keystone, Heavenly and Northstar through the 2016 season.

Even though scientists concluded their fossil excavation near Snowmass Village this past July, their search for answers was just beginning. Led by staff members from the Denver Museum of Nature & Science, the Ziegler Reservoir find provided a preserved series of Ice Age ecosystems and is her-alded as one of the most significant fossil discoveries ever in Colorado. And now, back at the museum, the ensuing four months of behind-the-scenes investigations have yielded some interesting results.
“We are in the early stages of scientific study and plan to continue offer-ing updates on our progress,” said Dr. Kirk Johnson, vice president of the Research and Collections Division at the Museum. “There are now more than 40 scientists investigating various aspects of the site and new data is pour-ing in daily.”
BoneshakingNext, in order to understand what led to such a collection of fossils to be in one area over an expanse of time, the team has to consider a variety of pos-sibilities. One idea – or hypoth-esis – is that an earthquake or a series of quakes trans-formed underlying sediment into quicksand. The quicksand trapped the more-than 30 mastodons that visited the area to drink and eat. “Evidence such as the nature of the debris flow deposits, the condition of the bones, and the distribution of the bones may support this sce-nario,” said Johnson. But this is just one of many theories to be examined. “Ultimately we use many types of data to test more than one hypothesis. This site is really complicated and this work is just beginning.”
by Kirsten H. MichelSeeking Answers
from Snowmastodon Findings
What have they discovered so far? What’s your species?First, the animal species count has reached 41. Among the previ-ously revealed seven large mammal species – mammoth, mastodon, Jefferson’s ground sloth, camel, deer, horse and giant bison – they have identified an additional 34 species from the dig. Among them are:
- Trout - Salamanders - Shrews- Bats - Weasels - River Otters- Rabits - Frogs (4 species)- Snakes (2 species) - Lizards (2 species)- Birds (5 species)- Rodents (14 species)*
*includes Beavers, Voles, Gophers, Muskrats, Lemmings, and more
Art in MotionAnd, finally, the museum has commissioned a series of acrylic-on-canvas paintings that illus-trate the site during various eras. World-renowned painter and muralist Jan Vriesen visited the dig site several times and has created five paintings depicting the Ziegler Reservoir landscapes. The series shows the area from about 130,000 years ago to early winter 2010, just after the first phase of the dig was concluding. Johnson notes, “These visual representations are impor-tant tools in helping us show how this site evolved over time. All of the paintings are made from the same vantage point, from the north side of the lake look-ing south with the Snowmass ski area visible to the left and the Snowmass Creek Valley and Mount Daly visible to the right.”

Call him snowboarding’s golden child. Shaun White has taken home gold from the Olympics, the Winter X Games and both the Summer (for skate-boarding, of course) and Winter Dew Cup events. The red-headed boarding sensation has been sponsored since he was 7 years old, went pro at age 13, and has steadily transformed the sport ever since. The Parent’s Handbook caught up with the ever-friendly Shaun White in early November, just as he was getting psyched for the snow.
On overcoming fear before doing a trick: “It’s not so much the fear, but the doubt. You don’t want to ever doubt yourself going at a jump. If you put the thought of falling in your head, the likelihood of falling goes way up. You
Shaun White’s fire lit for 2012
have to block that out and only think of the positive and only believe ‘I’m going to make it.’”
On the competition he’s most excit-ed for this winter: “Definitely the X Games. I’ll be there not only defend-ing the half pipe, but I’m planning to make my comeback in slopestyle. I stopped riding jumps because of the Olympics and in the meantime, everyone made leaps and bounds on what they were doing. I humbly bowed out at the slopestyle comp this past season. I showed up, know-ing I wasn’t going to win, which I don’t like to do often, but I got something that’s priceless: I left with the motivation to do better. I got the fire lit to do what needed to be done to get back on top of the podium.”
On his new home accessories line
by L.S. Burns
for Target: “I think the home side of things is really cool. When you’re young, your room is your spot in life... My favorite part was we got to make piggybanks, that was the one thing I was really into. It’s a piggy-bank with eight eyeballs.”
Keep up with Shaun’s antics by visit-ing www.shaunwhite.com or www.facebook.com/ShaunWhite.

DiD you know that rFta goes right to the four upvalley mountains of snowmass, buttermilk, aspen and Highlands? our buses are equipped with ski racks. so why not let us take your kids to their winter adventures!Every time a parent drives their kids to an outing, it’s four car trips on the road. Having your kids take the bus cuts the trips down to two, and this helps protect our environment.Having your kids take rFta is practical - it saves gas, money, and time. it also teaches your children to be green, and helps them develop a sense of responsibility. so this winter season think about whether or not it’s time for us to chauffeur your kids, and free up some of your time.

Communities™
Mothers are powerful, beautiful and diverse. Put a few of them together, and profound things happen in a community.
This has never been more true in the Roaring Fork Valley until now, as a new idea in social networking builds the idyllic towns that grace our corridor into more connected and supportive spheres for mothers at all stages of life.
Created by Carbondale resident Janine Cuthbertson in 2010, Moms for Moms Communities has been called the “super highway of local mommy information.” It sprouted from a simple idea, that “moms needed a better way to commu-nicate while finding and offering support and inspiration on the local level,” said Cuthbertson.
From potty training to the fight for the Thompson Divide. From deal-ing with teenagers and raising grandchildren, to joining volunteer opportunities and voicing ideas for education reform. Moms have strong opinions, tremendous ideas, and the drive to make a difference for their kids. And now, they have a very local and intimate vehicle for making their voices heard.
Moms for Moms sites are flourish-ing throughout the valley in Aspen, Basalt, Carbondale, Glenwood Springs and Rifle. Membership is free and local mothers oversee the sites.
Moms for Moms Communities sites are launching in small mountain towns across North America. To learn more, visit www.momsformomscommunities.com.
