The practical value of using robots at OUH Odense University Hospital and

Svendborg Sygehus

Peder Jest Medical Director, Chairman of Innovation Council Odense University Hospital peder.jest@rsyd.dk @peder_jest

OUH in numbers • University hospital with all medical specialties

• Four different locations on the island of Funen

• 10 % of Danish hospital activity

• 1046 hospital beds

• 10,000 employees

• 100,000 acute outpatients per year

• 106,000 patients discharged per year

• 1,100,000 outpatient visits per year

• Budget in 2019: 925 million euros

Robots are coming – are already here!

Why robots at OUH?

• Limited resources – fewer hands • Optimise use of staff time • Efficiency; it makes sense to automate manual processes • Standardization of processes, for example in diagnostics • Digital processes better data AI, prediction, clinical decision support • Patients today are comfortable with technology; Human-robot

interaction is not a barrier • Increased self-management and independence with "robot helpers"

Robot and drone strategy for OUH

Empower patients

Support clinicians

Optimized services

and workflow

Innovation

Robot applications Treatment and care

• Surgical robots (Da Vinci), rehabilitation, exoskeletons, etc.

Diagnostics • Screening, scanning, blood draw, etc.

Virtual presence • Telepresence for patients in hospital, patients in isolation, etc.

Logistics and service • Pharmacy/medicine, lab automation, transport, disinfection, etc.

Software bots • Automated patient record documentation (Manatee), quality and safety monitoring and reporting,

automation of HR tasks

Mobile service robots

Hubot – Blood sample transportation

• From outpatient clinic to lab • Saves 2,5 hours a day for lab staff • New routes include getting samples

from intensive care units and others

Roberta – Bringing snacks to patients

• Important dietary value in snacks • Staff do not have time for offering

snacks between meals • Testing just started

Cleaning and disinfection

• Automated floor cleaning in the main areas of the hospital

• UVD kills germs not reached with cleaning

Software 'bots' for administration

In software robotics, virtual 'robots' perform the clerical, high-volume or formulaic tasks normally performed by people using enterprise software.

Virtual presence

AV1 + Beam for hospitalised children

• Improved social life outside of hospital – participate in school and playtime activities • Better mobility within the children's hospital when not able to leave bed • Child/family can beam in for meetings at OUH when not in hospital

Diagnostics and screening

ROPCA: Robot platform for ultrasound scans

Automation and standardization: • Improved quality of scan • Computer-aided interpretation of results • Less physical strain for medical staff

Capsule endoscopy for screening of colorectal cancer

Quality and comfort: • Improved quality of screening • Computer-aided interpretation of results • Less discomfort than colonoscopy
