Definition of Erosion

• Erosion is the process whereby the soil and the rocky materials of the Earth's crust are loosened, dissolved, or worn away, and then moved from one place to another.

Agents of Erosion

• Running Water • Wind • Glaciers • Gravity

Running Water

• Running water can carve out dramatic valleys and canyons.

• The picture shows a V-shaped valley carved by a river.

Running Water

• Running water can carve out dramatic valleys and canyons.

• The picture shows a slot canyon created by extremely fast moving water. This place is very dangerous due to flash floods.

Running Water

• Sediment is picked up by the water and taken to a lower point.

• This process slowly carves out the land.

Agents of Erosion

• Running Water • Wind • Glaciers• Gravity

Wind

• Wind picks up small particles and moves them to another place.

• The picture shows sand dunes created by wind erosion.

Wind

• Wind picks up small particles and moves them to another place.

• The video shows a dust storm - erosion in progress.

Agents of Erosion

• Running Water • Wind • Glaciers • Gravity

Glaciers

• Glaciers pick up large sediment and very slowly carve out large U-shaped valleys.

• Yosemite Valley in California was created by a glacier.

Glaciers

• Glaciers pick up large sediment and very slowly carve out large U-shaped valleys.

• Half Dome in Yosemite Valley was sliced in half by a glacier.

Agents of Erosion

• Running Water • Wind • Glaciers • Gravity

Gravity

• Gravity causes materials to go downhill. This movement can be slow or quick.

• The picture shows cleaving; a piece of rock broke off and fell to the ground.

Gravity

Four types of erosion caused by gravity.

Comprehension Questions1. What is erosion?

2. Give an example of erosion and what caused it.

3. What agent of erosion caused what you see in the picture?
