Residual current circuit-breaker DFS 4 EV specifically developed for use in charge points and wall-boxes for charging electric vehicles (EV).
It is used where an upstream residual current operated protective device is not known or where an AC, A or F type RCD is in use.
The DFS 4 EV provides the required protection from dangerous residual currents at every single charging point. For example it also protects an upstream residual current operated protective device from the risk of not tripping for DC residual currents created by the charging equipment.

If charging equipment is connected to a standard socket protected by a type A RCD, smooth DC residual currents must be limited to max. 6 mA in the event of a fault, in order to prevent the upstream RCD from failing.
An upstream RCD may not be required for a fixed installation – refer to local connection regulations.
An upstream RCD is required even for charging equipment with fixed connections in order to meet the disconnection times for a TT network. The RCD EV prevents the RCD from failing.
An upstream type B RCD is required when more than one charge device is used, because the DC residual currents can add up in the event of a fault. An upstream type A RCD can no longer fulfil its protective function.

According to IEC 60364-7-72 every connection point (plug socket) must be fitted with its own residual current operated protective device (RCD) with rated residual current I∆n ≤ 30 mA. Measures must also be taken to ensure protection in the case of smooth DC residual currents that are higher than 6 mA.
What does the standard say?
Thanks to residual current circuit-breaker DFS 4 EV, the required residual current protective measures can be implemented without compromise for EV sockets at charge points and in wall-boxes. It provides safe isolation both from type A residual currents and from DC residual currents higher than 6 mA. This extra protection prevents upstream RCDs from failing and ensures that they continue to protect the existing electrical system.
