2009 Master Mariners Regatta
The predictions were for SSW winds 15 – 25 knots with gusts over 30, but fortunately, the high
winds never panned out. Some parts of the course were windy and others not enough wind, and
much of that was dependent on the start time. It all made for an interesting and tactical race.
The closest competition was in Ocean II. Credit was six seconds behind Chorus. Oussant was less
than a minute behind Credit. The Marconi II was also close with Sunda ahead of Nautigal by a
little over a minute and Unda close behind by another 21 seconds. Vixen, in M III, finally got her
“Cock of the Walk” flag this year after finishing second so many times; less you think the handicap
committee favored her, she also won the Homeward Bound trophy for the fastest elapse time. Two
boats new to the race, Chrysophyle in Marconi I and Andrew Mulligan in Gaff 3, took first place.
To the new boats, beware of your handicap next year, we now know how fast you are!
There were 69 boats in 13 divisions signed up for the race, and 66 boats showed up at the start on
Saturday morning including 8 bears – a record for those historic boats. These were the most boats
that we have had in awhile.

It was great to see the basin at Encinal was full of beautiful boats – more boats than we have had
in a number of years. The party was lively and the band was fun. There were still a number of
people on the dance floor when the band finally stopped which is unusual for this old crowd. The
only needed improvement for next year will be better beef for dinner.
The Regatta was a success due to the hard work of many volunteers and the contribution of other
Yacht Clubs including

The Sausalito Yacht Club Race Committee. They were a great team headed by
Jeff Zarwell and John Mount. They ran a flawless race.
The Encinal Yacht Club, Port Captain and all his volunteers organizing and moving boats into the basin after the race.
The St Francis for hosting the Skipper / Sponsor Luncheon.
All of our Sponsors and Ariane Paul for her hard work organizing the Sponsors.
Frank Hoburg, Peter English and Terry Klaus for helping to bring in many of the
Sponsors.
Terry Klaus for organizing the luncheon at the St Francis and the party at Encinal once again.
John and Anne Tucker for managing all the trophies. (They don’t need to go the
gym after schlepping all the perpetual trophies around.)
Chris Newel who comes out each year on the Race Committee to identify boats
and afterwards creates the results spreadsheet. We won’t know what to do if
Chris decides to race his boat, Pompero, next year.
Caleb Whitbeck for the artwork he created for this year’s t-shirt. I believe this
was t-shirt number 29!
Barbi Whitbeck & Patti Henderson making the t-shirts happen again this year.
Mike Douglas who not only does all our accounting but also arranged for the
bands at the party.
Ted Hall for donating a magnum of wine from Long Meadow Ranch to all the
winners. (No one has offered to share their wine with me yet this year….I guess
I will have to win next year.)
Captain Craig & the Lynx Crew for hosting the Pot Luck on Lynx.
And a special thanks to all the skippers who work hard to maintain these old boats and come out
to race. See you next year!

From the Quarter Deck.........
Thank goodness there are still romantics out there who are foolish enough to spend tons of time
and money on old wooden boats! This past weekend was one of the big rewards for all the effort we
have all put into maintaining our boats. Everyone I spoke to had a wonderful time on the
racecourse. When the Race Committee arrived at Encinal Yacht Club, the basin was full of
beautiful boats, the Dixieland band was playing lively music and the docks were full of excited and
happy people. The atmosphere was electric. Another successful Regatta! It made all the hard
work on the part of the volunteers and boat owners worth it.
I was very thankful that everything went so smoothly this year. I didn’t even hear any rumblings
about the handicap. But over the last couple of years, when I have commented on a person and/or
boat that was missing, I have been surprised to hear that they were disgruntled about something
that happened a few years ago and have decided not to participate any more. My surprise comes
from the fact that these issues have never been brought to the attention of the Board. I am sure
there will always be dissatisfied members and the Board can’t always resolve problems, but we
should be given the opportunity to try. If you have an issue, let us know before you go away mad.
Even more critical than complaints, we would like to hear about any new ideas you may have for
the organization. We have been doing the same things the same way for a number of years. I
know we are all traditionalists, but it may be time to make some changes to keep the organization
vital and growing. If you have any suggestions for improving any of our current events or ideas for
new functions, etc. bring them to our Annual Meeting or tell a Board member.
One of the changes that must take place is sharing the workload. Right now the Board and a few
additional people do all the work. We have done a good job so far (if I must say so myself), but the
Board is getting tired. We need your help to keep this organization going. Some of the Board
members have been on the Board for over 10 and 20 years. We need new people to join the Board.
We also need to change the way the Board works so that a single Board member does not do all the
work for an event or function, but rather we have volunteers to help out. So please step forward
and volunteer. Some of the ways you can help are…
Running for the Board
Running an event such as The Ocean Cruise, River Rat Cruise, China Camp, etc.
Suggest and organize a new cruise or event – e.g. a speaker night
Take over selling t-shirts at Regatta and/or Boat Show
Write articles for the Shellback
Set up a forum for information exchange
Solicit Sponsors
Help the Regatta Chairman with Xeroxing, mailings, race committee, etc.
Purchase flags and keeper trophies
Manage and track perpetual trophies
Walk the docks and solicit new members
Our next event is the Annual Meeting and Boat Show on June 27th & 28th. Bring you boat, your
ideas and suggestions for improvement and your willingness to help out. I will see you there!

From Barge to Bear
This was a different race for me. I
usually skipper ALMA in past Master
Mariners Regattas and it was really
fun to sail a pointy boat that goes to
weather. I crewed for my wife Jill on
her Bear (no. 64) Bongo. She was the
boss, I just drove the boat. We were
still breaking in the new outboard on
the slog up the city front from the
estuary and we stopped to wish the
crew on ALMA good luck (and to pee
one more time). Then it was off to San Francisco Marina to stow the outboard for the race and get
down to business. We were lining up for a good start and things were getting hairy (Jill was telling
me to stay back a little and I wasn’t listening) with seven other Bears on the line. My brain
thought it heard “Bongo over” at the start (shit shit shit) (it was really ALMA) so being the good
sports we turned around and restarted (double shit). The wind was a bit southerly so we hit Little
Harding no problem. Then it was off to Blackhaller and bucking the last of the flood. A few tacks
later we had overtaken a couple of Bears (this is starting to feel good) and were rounding the
weather mark. I don’t have a lot of experience with a spinnaker so this was an education (this is an
odd sport where you get excited about going 8 miles an hour). Jill ran fore deck while I steered and
Art McClish handled sheets. Mali (Jill’s daughter) was learning to race so she was ducking, helped
with ballast and made sandwiches. It was a bit of a head reach down to Blossom and a debate as to
when and if we should jibe (yes dear). All went well enough and we reached off to number 6. Some
of the Bears were not sure about the mark and took a flyer toward South Hampton. We got into a
fight for third place with Chance Bear (in your face!) and got into a luffing match for a while. Then
they flew off under us and shot away (damn it!). It was a little hairy again getting under the Bay
Bridge, but thanks to Tom List (I owe ya one) and Polaris for a tow through. Then down the
estuary and raft up at Encinal Yacht Club for the party (where’s the dinner and drink tickets!!). I
could get used to sailing a small pointy boat instead of a big old barge (sorry ALMA). It was great
having all those Bears to race and I hope we see them again before next years Regatta.

Notice of Annual Meeting
&
Election of Officers
June 27, 2009
Corinthian Yacht Club, Tiburon, CA
The 2009 annual meeting of the membership as required by the MMBA By-Laws will be on
Saturday June 27th at the Corinthian Yacht Club. The meeting will be called to order on or about
1800 on the boat deck near the main small boat hoist. Immediately following the annual meeting
will be a no host dinner and party.
Before the annual meeting we will hold elections for three Directors for the MMBA Board. There
are nine Directors. Each is elected for a three-year term. So every year we elect 3 Directors. The
terms of Terry Klaus, Bill Belmont and Ariane Paul are expiring this year. After more than 25
years on the Board, Terry Klaus has declined to run again. (Thank you, Terry for all your years of
hard work.) We have just about convinced Ariane to run again. Not sure yet about Bill Belmont.
Dean Gurke has entered his name.
Nominations are still open. We need more people to run and become involved. Please
consider running. Do not be shy
and wait until you are approached.
To add your name to the
nominees, please contact any of
the current Board of Directors
or Junior Staff Commodore,
Dee Dee Lozier (510) 653-8820
by June 21st. An email will be
sent out the week before the
election listing all the candidates
along with information about each.
This information will also be on our
website.
Members are requested to pick
up a ballot from Dee Dee Lozier
on Stroma of Mey and place it
in the ballot box by 1730. If you
are unable to attend, you may vote by mail. Mail your selections (no more than 3) along with the
name of your boat and your signature to Junior Staff Commodore, Dee Dee Lozier, 481
Pedestrian Way, Oakland, CA 94618 post marked by Wednesday, June 24th. .
The agenda for the annual meeting will be the results of the election along with a brief update of
what is happening in the Association. Also, members are encouraged to bring forward any new
ideas or suggestions for the organization. The meeting will be brief. So any new ideas and
suggestions will be recorded and discussed in full at a later date.

Wooden Boat Show, Sunday June 28, 2009 Corinthian Yacht Club
43 Main Street, Tiburon, CA
We have a few weeks left to finish all the
spit and polish work to get ready for this
year’s Wooden Boat Show. The sign-up
form has been sent out and is available
online for current MMBA members to have
our vessels participate in the show. Please
send it back to Bill Belmont A.S.A.P. so that
he can submit the list of vessels to
Corinthian YC. Saturday night, June 27th,
we will have our annual membership
meeting. The string group, “Nob Hill
Trio,” will provide music during our dinner
party. Cost for dinner is $20. We should be
able to arrive at Corinthian YC a little
earlier this year. An update will be emailed
to members in advance of that weekend as
to what time we can start bringing our boats in on Saturday 6/27. The CYC will be monitoring
Channel 68 for vessels coming in. Please let them know as you are approaching Tiburon so that
they can give you your slip assignment. This is our annual fund-raising event for the Master
Mariners Benevolent Foundation which
carries on the tradition that our
organization was originally founded on,
continuing to support activities and groups
that are focused on traditional sailing craft
and related skills. Regatta sponsors were
given a pass to the show at the May
luncheon, and a list of their names will be
on hand at the entrance gate. Admission is
$10 for adults, free for children under 12
accompanied by an adult. Spaulding
Wooden Boat Center staff will be making
small boat models with children again, and
the “San Francisco Feetwarmers” will fill
the air with jazz music during the show.
In the afternoon, show award winners will
be announced. Lunch will be available from
CYC for a nominal amount both days, as
well as a breakfast buffet Sunday morning
before the show. Please sign up Saturday
night to help for an hour on Sunday at
either the t-shirt table or front gate
entrance. Help is always appreciated to
spread out the work load.

Sponsors / Skippers Luncheon– a big success!
Our loyal sponsors, both long-time and new, came through once again despite the current economic
climate. As mentioned at the luncheon, this strong support gives incentive to us, the care-takers of
these beautiful vessels, to put in the time and effort to keep them going so that they can grace the
waters of our bay, and beyond, for
many years to come. The past
few years have seen an increase
in the higher level sponsorships,
and many sponsors help in more
than one way. Once again, I had
superb help from the Sponsor
Committee: Terry Klaus, Peter
English, Mike Douglas, and
Frank Hoburg (of The Tidebook
Company and SF Bar Pilots). At
the lunch this year’s t-shirt cover-
girl/boat was unveiled: NOMAD,
a Robb-Lion that was restored
back to Bristol condition by Dick
and Sharon Ruddick a couple of
years ago. The 2009 Sponsors
Directory will be online within the next couple of weeks and distributed to membership at our
June 27th annual meeting. Please go through it and Support Our Sponsors as often as you can,
and join me in giving them our heart-felt thanks.

June 20, 2009, Treasure Island
I had so much fun helping at Summer Sailstice last year, that I volunteered again once I found out
it will be a week before our boat show. This is the 9th year of the event, and momentum keeps
growing. It is a chance to introduce sailing to the general public with free sailboat rides, boats on
display of all sizes, maritime companies and their products on display, five bands from noon
through the evening, youth, YRA and kiteboarding races all day, a boat building contest, and a lot
of cruise-in boats and yacht clubs, and it’s free. If you haven’t been before, please come check it
out. Some MMBA vessels might want to anchor out Friday night in a raft-up / potluck to be on the
scene before Clipper Cove fills up. If you have a group of three that would like to compete in the
boat-building contest, please contact: Ariane Paul, arianepaul@yahoo.com
