HERE’S WHAT’S HAPPENING AT
ST. CHRISTOPHER IN THE WEEK AHEAD: “Notes” from Phil & Amy
The Best Focus of all – Sunday Mass!
The Entrance Antiphon from Psalm
96: O sing a new song to the Lord; sing to the
Lord, all the earth. In His presence are majesty
and splendor, strength and honor in His holy
place. Our First reading from Nehemiah: Ezra the priest stood
before the people and proclaimed the book of the law. Then He
“interpreted it so that all could understand.” He declared the day
holy and urged the people to rejoice. Our Responsorial Psalm 19:
Your words, Lord, are Spirit and life. The Second Reading from
1 Corinthians 12: The body is one and has many members, but
all members, though many, are one body. Further, each part is
indispensable. So it is with Christ’s body: we, though many, are
one. The Gospel Acclamation from Luke: The Lord sent me to
bring glad tidings to the poor, and to proclaim liberty to captives.
The Gospel from Luke: Returning to Nazareth, Jesus entered the
synagogue and read from the prophet Isaiah. After reading, Jesus
proclaimed “Today this Scripture passage is fulfilled in your
hearing.” And the Communion Antiphon, Psalm 34: Look to-
ward the Lord and be radiant; let your faces not be abashed.
Listen to our Psalm today; “Your words, Lord, are Spirit
and Life.” And listen again to Nehemiah 8, “…do not be sad-
dened this day, for rejoicing in the Lord must be your strength.”
Pretty much all my life, well from about second grade
on at St. Simon the Apostle, I have been attending multiple Sun-
day Masses. One thing I know is I have always fed off the people
being the Mass. Not being at Mass or being in Mass but people
that you see and feel and know that Mass is in them; Those that
share the joy of Mass and celebrate this great gift. I obviously
was guided by my good parents in being involved in Mass so
soon in my life, but wow, what a great surrounding and path to
form and allow for me. But I’m also feeding off of and hopefully
reflecting a joy and peace that my fellow mass goers have. A
committed usher welcoming and greeting parishioners and visi-
tors, a behind the scene sacristan dedicatedly preparing, a choir
member setting up chairs and being committed to rehearsals in
preparation for better praise and worship to the Lord, an altar
server sharing the sign of peace and doing their duties with alert-
ness and holiness, a reader that radiates putting their heart and
soul into preparations for Proclaiming the Word, a deacon and
priest that share their faith with their whole life, a behind the
scene maintenance person that prepares all the facets of our
church no matter what the weather brings, a volunteer to help
share the Word with the children, a person praising God in prayer
in the congregation, a mom and dad that gleam with pride and joy
because their child just delivered a petition gracefully from the
ambo at a special liturgy, a person that has sorrow inside yet
know there is comfort here from the struggles ahead seeking a
heart of trust, a ministry scheduler making sure all roles of our
lay ministers are fulfilled, a musician that has spent a life time
developing a God given talent and a communion minister bring-
ing Jesus to one of our assembly or homebound.
Sunday Mass focuses us in on the rest of our lives.
Spread the joy and receive it… “For Rejoicing in the Lord must
be our strength.”
Listen today to the power of the Spirit,
Phil & Amy

7th Grade Learns About Ecosystems
The 7th grade students learned more about animal
changes in animal populations. They simulated an
owl's hunting through various ecosystem changes
from drought to battling competitors for food.
8th Grade Studies
Newton's Laws of Motion
The 8th grade class at St. Christopher School, as a
culminating project focusing on Newton's Laws of
Motion, designed and raced “Balloon Race Cars.”
Each team had to design a car which was to be
powered by no more than 2 balloons and was to
travel a distance of 4 meters. Mrs. Nowak's 4th
grade class came to watch the races and served as
impartial judges to determine the car with the "best
design." The 8th graders did a fantastic job
constructing these cars and explaining Newton
and his laws to the 4th graders.

COULD YOU NOT THEN
WATCH ONE HOUR WITH
ME? (MT. 26:40)
These words addressed to Peter as a
plea, Jesus no addresses to you and to me.
Gethsemane Garden, place of the event, was the
scene of Jesus’ compressed time of Lent. Sweating
blood in agony, more earnestly he prayed, thus both
prayer and a sacrifice he thereby made. As Ash
Wednesday and Lent now rapidly approach, how
can we respond to Jesus’ plea and escape his
reproach? We can sacrifice time and earnestly pray
for graces and pardon, in our church’s very own
Gethsemane Garden. The oratory behind our main
altar is where this garden is found, and there
opportunities for God’s merciful blessings do most
assuredly abound. Eucharistic exposition and
adoration are usually available there except on
Sunday, each other day of the week—on all
mornings from the hour 7:25AM to 8:25AM, for the
graces we seek.
Eucharistic adoration will also be offered from
9:00AM in the morning till 5:00PM in the afternoon
On February 17th this year, in commemoration of
the sixth anniversary of its establishment here.
Chicago Says No More Presentation
Chicago Says No More, a coalition of
nonprofit, business, and civic leaders,
addresses the challenges of domestic violence and
sexual assault in the Chicago metro area. The mission
of Chicago Says No More is to increase awareness,
educate, and engage concerned citizens about these
problems that affect many people.
The Domestic Violence Outreach Ministry of Sacred
Heart Parish and their pastor, Fr. Pat Tucker, invite
you to a presentation by Sheila King, whom founder
Kristie Paskvan (CFO of Mesirow Financial) asked to
help establish Chicago Says No More.
This free event will be held on Thursday, January
28th from 7PM to 8:30PM in the Ministry Center
Gym (8245 W. 111th St., Palos Hills). No RSVP
required.
Domestic violence and sexual assault thrive when
people make excuses about getting involved. Now it
is your time for your voice to be heard. Please join
more than 2,540 Chicago area citizens in saying: NO
MORE. Visit chicagosaysnomore.org to take our
pledge.

DIVINE MERCY: THE YEAR OF MERCY,
AND THE APOCALYPTIC VISION OF POPE FRANCIS
TUESDAY, JANUARY 26, 2016 AT 7-8:30 PM
Sacred Heart Parish - Ministry Center
8245 W. 11th Street - Palos Hills, IL
(708) 974-3336
Speaker: Dr. Graziano
Marcheschi
Pope Francis continues to surprise and mystify. What’s behind his seeming urgency? Why do the “rules” seem less important to him than other popes? Why has he called an extraordinary Jubilee Year to focus on Mercy? How do end-times apocalyptic notions shape his vision and impact the exercise of his ministry? We will explore these intriguing questions and better understand some of the influences that make this pope tick. Dr. Graziano Marcheschi, Vice President for Mission and Ministry is an author, educator, lecturer, and storyteller who speaks nationally on topics of liturgy and the arts, scripture, and lay ecclesial ministry. He is the Vice President for University Mission and Ministry at Saint Xavier University and for eighteen years served as the Chicago Archdiocesan Director of Lay Ministry Formation. He has authored many books and articles, performed for hundreds of thousands, and led many retreats and days of reflections using the performing arts to lead others to prayer. Among his publications are nine volumes of Workbook for Lectors and Gospel Readers (LTP). For nine years Graziano hosted a local cable-TV program with Cardinal Francis George called The Church, the Cardinal and You and he continues to co-host the Archdiocesan morning radio program Catholic Community of Faith.

Speaker: Marge Garbacz
St. Paul instructs us to be people of constant prayer. However, busy and demanding lives appear to make this instruction an absolute impossibility. In this presentation, we will examine the ways in which some of greatest saints – St. Augustine, St. Francis of Assisi, St. Ignatius, and St. Thomas Aquinas – sought to live prayerful lives. We will look to these four anchors in the Catholic spiritual tradition to assist us in deepening our own spiritual lives through constant prayer. Marge Garbacz is the Director of Mission Integration and Pastoral Care at Franciscan Village in Lemont. She is a certified Pastoral Associate / Director of Religious Education who served in the Archdiocese of Chicago both as an elementary educator and as a parish pastoral minister. A well-received speaker, she gives various presentations and workshops on liturgy and sacramental life throughout the Archdiocese.
