The 2050 system: how we got there

The 2050 system: how we got there

Didn’t wait for “just around the corner” technology

The 2050 system: how we got there

Used systems/technology that worked in 2011

The 2050 system: how we got there

• Instead of “fast follower” “technology-taker” mentality

The 2050 system: how we got there

• Instead of “fast follower” “technology-taker” mentality

• We took control – lead the way

The 2050 system: how we got there

• Instead of “fast follower” “technology-taker” mentality

• We took control – lead the way• Became an example to other countries on

solving the problem

The 2050 system: how we got there• It is not about mobility• It is not about transport

The 2050 system: how we got there• It is not about mobility• It is not about transport

• It was about us as Kiwis

The 2050 system: how we got there• It is not about mobility• It is not about transport

• It was about us as Kiwis– Being able to access the actives we want

The 2050 system: how we got there• It is not about mobility• It is not about transport

• It was about us as Kiwis– Being able to access the actives we want– Goods that we make/need getting to market

The 2050 system: how we got there• It is not about mobility• It is not about transport

• It was about us as Kiwis– Being able to access the actives we want– Goods that we make/need getting to market

The 2050 system: how we got there

• We stopped “encouraging” people to bike/walk and to take public transport

The 2050 system: how we got there

• We stopped “encouraging” people to bike/walk and to take public transport

Instead....• Aggressively pursued an infrastructure

where low/zero energy access was the least cost option

• No more time spent contemplating the roll of fossil fuels in the future

• Only steps towards a fossil free future were taken

The 2050 system: how we got there

Lignite Coal Diesel

CO2

“Take full account of CO2“

“Transitional measure”

• No new roads

The 2050 system: how we got there

• No new roads• Drastic change in funding:

– roads redevelopment

The 2050 system: how we got there

• No new roads• Drastic change in funding:

– roads redevelopment• City streets progressively pedestrianised

The 2050 system: how we got there

• Although some felt that a more measured approach was necessary i.e. the wealth of fossil fuels should be considered....

The 2050 system: how we got there

• Although some felt that a more measured approach was necessary i.e. the wealth of fossil fuels should be considered....

• Given the urgency of the situation, ALL efforts were put into reducing fossil fuel use
