STRYKER: March 18, 2014-The
Stryker High School Chapter of theNational Honor Society held their annualmeeting on March 18, welcoming six newmembers to the Stryker Chapter. Thestudents selected for the Stryker HighSchool, 2014 induction are: SeniorsMegan Neville and Kyle Rohrs; JuniorsAmy Chappuis, Zach Tingley, TannerClingaman and Katie Yoder.
The National Honor Society wasestablished in 1921 and is the Nationspremier organization established torecognize outstanding high schoolsstudents who demonstrate excellencein the areas of scholarship, leadership, service and character. According tothe National Honor Societies website(www.nhs.us), four main purposes have
guided the chapters of the NHS fromthe beginning: to create enthusiasmfor scholarship; to stimulate a desire torender service; to promote leadership;and to develop character in the studentsof secondary schools. These purposesalso are used by chapters as establishedcriteria for membership selection intoeach local chapter.
At Stryker High School Katie Jimenezserves as the NHS Advisor and is assistedin her duties by faculty membersMelanie Baldwin, Shane Marshall,Donneen Dyess, Mike Donovan, andPrincipal David Schultz. Using thecriteria set forth above, Katie Jimenezand her committee reviewed this yearscandidates by closely scrutinizingeach students overall record and by
comparing the students achievementsin the four categories set forth by theNHS.
Each category is explained as follows:Scholarship represents the academiccomponent of National Honor Societyinduction requirements. The nationalorganization recommends a B average, meaning an 85 percent on a 100-pointscale or a 3.0 on a 4.0 grade point averagescale. However, the faculty advisersat each school can choose higherscholarship standards. The scholarshipportion of the NHS requirements is therst cut for applicants; faculty will notconsider any student who does not meetthese academic requirements.
National Honor Society hopefuls must
also demonstrate service to the school, their church or community to join theorganization. Students can showcasethis service experience by participatingin individual service projects after
school or on weekends.Students interested in joining
the National Honor Society must
demonstrate leadership capabilitiesas well. They can show leadership byearning roles as captains of sportsteams or executive councils of clubs.According to the National Honor Societywebsite, leadership also includes theability to solve problems, contributeideas, and be resourceful. Studentscan look beyond school extracurricularactivities for leadership opportunitiesand nd them in their community.
Students also must demonstratea strong character to be inducted intothe National Honor Society. They candisplay their character by followingschool rules and staying out of trouble.A NHS inductee can further show strongcharacter by demonstrating honesty,reliability, courtesy, and respect;
students should demonstrate ateachable spirit and a genuine interestto learn and grow.
The 2014 inductees join StrykerSeniors Dean Beamont, Kristie Huston,Conner Varner, Conner Sullivan,Ruthann Stuckey, Bailey Short, andcomprise the current active studentmembers of the Stryker Chapter of theNational Honor Society.

Moving forward from last monthsdiscussion, Edon Village Council votedto suspend the three-reading rule andapprove Ordinance 02-14, Allocation ofIncome Tax Funds, during its regularmonthly meeting held Monday, March 17,2014 in Council Chambers. In attendancefor the evening session were CouncilorsRoxana Nester, Lee Lawrence, Duane
Thiel, Richard Chapin, Chuck Bidwell,Gale Horn, Mayor Darlene Burkhardt,Fiscal Ofcer Heidi Bidwell, Solicitor Tom
Thompson and one guest. This past January, Fiscal Ofcer
Bidwell requested Council to considerredoing Ordinance 181.09: Disbursementof Income Tax Funds beginning withthe second quarter of Fiscal Year 2014.As she noted, collected income taxdisbursements were currently allocatedat 80.34 percent to the General Fund;11.33 percent to Sanitary Sewer and8.33 percent to Capital Outlay. With theVillages last sanitary sewer loan paymentexpected in July, future allotments tothe department could be eliminated andpercentages to General and Capital OutlayFunds be adjusted accordingly.
Upon concluding their nal reviewof the amended Ordinance prepared by
Solicitor Thompson, Council approvedrepealing existing Section 181.09 of theCodied Ordinances of Edon, Ohio andenacting Section 181.09 of the CodiedOrdinances of Edon, Ohio regarding theallocation of the original one percentincome tax and declaring an emergency.
Effective April 1, 2014, Ordinance02-14, now allocates 97.5 percent of allincome tax receipts (received from theoriginal one percent income tax) to theGeneral Fund to be used for any lawfulpurposes and the remaining 2.5 percentto be set aside and used in the CapitalOutlay Fund.
Additionally that night, Council was
informed by Street Superintendent JimBrigle quotes to repair the backhoe brakesnow ranged from $7,500 to $10,000.While speaking to the matter at hand, questions and concerns ~ such as whetherthe Village could get another ten years ofservice from the equipment with completedrepairs; when the time comes to purchasea new backhoe (estimated at seventy-ninethousand dollars), could costs be possiblyshared with Florence Township; would theVillage be able to recoup money spent ifthe backhoe was later sold; could repairsbe done in-house rather than contractedout ~ were posed and taken into accountbefore proceeding. With a motion onthe table, Council went on to approverepairs to the Village backhoe as initiallysubmitted.
In other action, Council:
Shared Spring Trash pickup wouldtake place Saturday, May 17.
Heard Chief of Police Tom Szymczaksdetailed Service Log and Vehicle Report forFebruary. Also noted was his attendanceat the recent Mock Crash planning meetingand handling of last months bomb threatat the school.
Noted with current budget cuts, thePark Department would be allowed twentyhours per week for part-time workers.
Set the Street Committee meeting(Councilors Thiel, Horn and Lawrence) for
Thursday, March 27 at 9:00 a.m.Learned the Park Board needs to be
reorganized by the end of the month.Accepted the Minutes, Financial
Report and Bills as presented.Learned WEDCOs annual luncheon

A Tasty Tap In Montpelier, Ohio
By: Jennifer Manlove
THE VILLAGE REPORTER
Even though Montpelier missed out
on the rst place win at the 24th annual
Berkeley Springs International Water
Tasting Competition in West Virginia,
they did place. Montpelier was named as
a Clean Water Winner. They say it was abattle of titans and The Best Municipal
Water Award went to Montpelier who
tied with Dickinson, ND. Montpelier is
not a stranger to this competition, the
Village has won rst-place honors for
the municipal water on three separate
occasions: in 2003, 2006, and 2007.
The entries were judges from 18
states, three Canadian provinces, 12
foreign nations and ve continents.
The top winner again this year was a
Canadian competitor from Clearbrook,
B.C. The ten media judges selected by
Klein Rone included representatives
from various regional and national
media including television and online
magazines. They were instructed by
von Wiesenberger to look, sniff, and
taste each water under guidelines
similar to those in a wine tasting.
The water is rated on several criteria.
First is the appearance. It needs to beclear or slightly opaque for the glacial
waters. The aroma of the water is also
considered, of which there should be
none. The taste needs to be clean, light,
and make you thirsty for more.
For anyone who is interested,
the 25th annual Berkeley Springs
International Water Tasting is scheduled
for Saturday, February 21, 2015. For
more information on Berkeley Spring,
you can check out their website www.

Recently a local resident contactedthe Montpelier Police Department in re-gards to a potential scam that claims po-lice ofcers benet from the funds. Theorganization is called Police ProtectionFund and, while it is an actual organi-zation, the majority of the funds thatthey take in do not actually help ofcers. The funds raised are supposed to go topay death benets for ofcers killed inthe line of duty. The organization usestele-marketers to seek out donations fortheir cause. Legally, the calls cannot bestopped the way other marketing callscan under federal and state do-not-calllaws because non-prot groups are ex-
empt. However, it is important to re-member that just because they have thelegal status of a non-prot charity does
not make them legitimate. There are amass amount of scam charities that col-lect millions with little money actuallygoes to their causes.
The Better Business Bureau has aWise Giving Alliance Program. This pro-gram reports that they requested infor-mation from the Police Protection Fundbut they have not responded. The pro-gram reports on national charities and
determines if they meet 20 voluntarystandards on matters such as char-ity nances, appeals, and governance. The participation is voluntary but whena charity fails to participate it lacks acommitment to transparency. Withoutthe requested information, the Alliancecannot determine if this charity adheresto the Standards for Charity Account-ability.
The Montpelier Police Departmentmade a statement saying that they donot endorse this group and would notrecommend your donation to them. Theycontribute nothing to our agency and ifthey pose as representatives of our agen-cy it is false. It is our recommendationthat you contribute to specic memori-als for fallen ofcers if you so choose.
