Welcometoourfirstevereditionof‘TheWetherbridge’!IcanthinkofnobetterwaytomarktheendofwhathasbeenaseminalyearforusatWetherby-Pembridge,NewYorkandTheAlphaPlusGroup.AswemovetowardstheopeningofournewschoolinSeptember2017,Iammindedtobringyouregularupdatesandtofurtherestablishtheheartandsoulofourever-growing,newfamilycommunityhereinNewYork.Itissoimportantformethatwecontinuouslystopandreflectandtocelebrateeachsteptowardsprogressandachievement.Thiswillalwayssitattheveryheartofourschoolethosandthisnewsletterisdesignedtoinvolveyouallineverystepofthisspecialanduniqueinauguraljourney.YouareourWPNY‘PioneerParents’and‘FoundingFriendsandFaculty’-welcometoyouall!

AsIwalkedroundCentralParkyesterday,Icouldn’thelpbutthinktomyselfthattherereallyisnobetterCityintheworldtoheraldintheholidayseason.IlovethisiconicandvintagephototakenoftheCityanditfeelssoreminiscentofthechilly,yetbeautifulweatherthathasdescendedonusallthisweekend!

2016hasbeenquiteajourneyforWetherby-Pembridgeanditwashearteningtoseesuch

positivityatourChristmasDrinkswhichwereheldatTheBritishResidenceonMonday5thDecember.Itwasexcellenttoseeyouall,butitwasdoublyfittingtoseetheveryessenceofourschooltakingshape.Itisthatcamaraderie,energyandsenseoftogethernessthatwillalwaysencapsulateourfuture.Thankyoutoallofyouwhomanagedtoattendanditwasexcellenttosharethiswithyouall.WewerejoinedbyGrahamAble,ourExecutiveDeputyChairmanofAlphaPlus,fromLondonandIknowhewouldbequicktosharemysenseofexcitementandappreciation.Thereismuchtocelebratefromourjourneytodateandforthoseofyouwhomayhavemissedour2016mediacoverage,youareabletofollowallofourcurrentarticlesfromthisedition.Myownpersonalhighlightswillalwaysbeginwithyou,ourfamiliesandprospectivechildren.IthasbeenadelighttomeeteachandeveryoneofyouandIhavethoroughlyenjoyedourconvivialconversationsandchildplaysessionsat641LexingtonAvenue.Yourchildrenhavealreadymadequiteanimpressiononourteam,whichonlymakesmemoreeagertowelcomethatfirstopeningdayintheFallnextyear.ManyofyourchildrenhavebeenslightlybemusedandfascinatedbymyverystrongEnglishaccentbutsomehowwe’vemuddledthroughexceptionallywell!ThankyoutoallofyouwhoattendedourtwoinauguralOpenHousesattheLondonNYCHotelandTheHarvardClubinOctober–therainchosetodescendinsomestyleon27thOctoberbutitdidn’tseemtodeterourtrustedsupporters(andmademefeelrightathome!)WewereproudtosponsortheBritishAmericanBusinessTransatlanticAwardsatthePierreHotelinOctoberandwiththecloseaffinitywearealsobuildingwithStGeorge’sSocietyandwiththankstoMrsAntoniaRomeo,HerMajesty’sConsulGeneralhereinNewYork,wefeelverywelcomedandsupportedaswemoveto2017.Rapidprogressiskeyforourschool,andyetsteadyandfirmexpansionisequallyimportant.IampleasedtoannouncethefirstofournewFacultyappointmentsandIamproudforyoutoreadtheirprofessionalandpersonalbiographiesandwelookforwardtowelcomingtheteamtoNewYorkinthesummermonthsof2017.

Iamahighly-experiencededucationalpractitionerwithexperienceofbothUKstateandindependentschools,acrossthekeystages.Afterbeginningmycareerinthenorth-eastofEngland,ImovedtoLondontojoinLyndhurstHousePreparatorySchoolasaclassteacher.FromthereIwentontospendsixyearsteachingatButeHousePreparatorySchoolinHammersmith,becomingHeadofLowerSchoolin2015whereIwasresponsibleforchildreninReception(Prekindergarten),Year1(Kindergarten)andYear2(Grade1).Amongstmanythings,IamalsoaCEOP(ChildExploitationandOnlineProtectionCentre)AmbassadorandIampassionateabouttheimportantroledigitaltechnologyhastoplayineducation.AtButeHouseIcreatedawholeschoolapproachtoonlinesafety,designedtoensurechildrenandstaffstaysafeonline.Ihaveatrack-recordofbuildingstrongfoundationsthatunderpinlearningbycreatingastimulatingclassroomenvironmentthatempowerschildrentotakeownershipoftheireducationandchallengesthemtofulfiltheirfullpotential.IfellinlovewithNewYorkwhileonvacationinthecityafewyearsagoandIamdelightedtobepartoftheteamatWetherby-Pembridge,NewYorkfromtheoutset.Ienjoycycling,hostingdinnerpartiesandtravellinginmysparetime–I’mlookingforwardtoexploringmoreofNorthAmericawhilstlivingintheUSAandIamextremelyexcitedtobestartingmynewlifeinNewYorkwithmyhusband.

Miss Sarah Kilbane EarlyYearsCo-ordinatorandTeacherIwillbejoiningtheWetherby-PembridgeNewYorkteamastheEarlyYearsCoordinatorandReceptionClassteacher.IamoriginallyfromBerkshire,whichiswhereIstartedmyteachingcareer,attendingReadingUniversitytoobtainmyGraduateTeachingCertificate.IhaveenjoyedteachinginBerkshire,LondonandmorerecentlyinaBritishschoolinKualaLumpur,Malaysia.HavingspecialisedasanEarlyYearsteacherIhavespentmuchofmycareertodateteachingReceptionandYear1.Ilovethecuriosity,boundlessenergy,andsheerhonestyofchildrenintheseyears!Iamcurrentlyundertakingaresearchprojectfocusedonoutdoorlearningspaces,whichisarealinterestofmine.LivinginSouthEastAsiahascombinedtwoofmybiggestpassions;travelandfood!AsadisastrouscookIhavemanagedtopickupafewsimplerecipesalongtheway,andwillenthusiasticallytrytheseonwillingguests.

Opening of Wetherby Kensington

WearedelightedtoannouncetheopeningofanewschoolcalledWetherbyKensingtoninLondon.TheschoolwillalsoopeninSeptember2017andwillbelocatedat4WetherbyGardens,SW50JN.

WetherbyKensingtonwillbeatwoform,non-selective,pre-preparatoryschoolforboysfromReceptiontoYear3.ItwillfollowexactlythesamecurriculumandsharethesamevaluesandethosasourNottingHillschools,andwillbeanintegralpartoftheWetherbyGroupofschools.

BoysatWetherbyKensingtonwillreceivethesamehighlevelsofacademiceducationandpastoralcarecurrentlyfoundatWetherbySchool.TheschoolwillopenwithtwoReceptionclassesandwillthengroworganically.

TheschoolwillprepareboysforonwardprogressiontotopprepschoolsincludingWetherbyPreparatorySchool.BoysatWetherbyKensingtonwillhaveanautomaticplaceatWetherbyPreparatorySchoolwhentheyleavetheschooliftheirparentswishthemtogotherefromYear4onwards.

WearedelightedtoannouncethatMissHelenMilneshasbeenappointedasthefoundingHeadofWetherbyKensington.MissMilneshasbeenDeputyHead(Pastoral)atWetherbySchoolforoversixyears,andhasbeenwithussince2008.SheiscongratulatedandwishedeverysuccessbyeveryonehereattheWetherbyandPembridgeHallschools.

AsGrahamAble,ourExecutiveDeputyChairmanannouncedatourWetherby-PembridgeNewYorkChristmasDrinks,theseareexcitingandever-expandingtimesfortheAlphaPlusGroupandouruniquefamilyofschools.

Miss Emerald Fraser NurseryTeacherFoundationDegreeinEarlyYearsEducation(UniversityofKingston)NVQinEarlyEducationandChildDevelopment.IamEmeraldandamveryexcitedtobethefoundingNurseryTeacheratWetherby-Pembridge,NewYork.IgrewupinalargefamilyinWestSussex,England. Ihaveapassion forEarly YearsEducationandsince joiningTheMinorsNurserySchoolin2010haveworkedacrosstheyoungeragegroupsteachingchildrenfrom2yearto5yearoldsbothinNurseryandPreparatorysettings. I believe that a child’s introduction to education should beexceedinglyhappyandlookforwardtobringingthequalitiesandprinciplesthatIhaveusedsuccessfullyinLondontocreateastructured,yetmagicalandexcitingplaybasedlearningenvironment.I have been fortunate enough to travel all over the world and loveexperiencing different places and meeting new people. When I’m notteachingIenjoyoutdooractivities,inparticularskiingandrunningaswellascookingandfood. Iwas very involvedwithMusicandDramawhenatschoolmyselfandgoregularlytothetheatreandenjoylisteningtoawidevarietyofmusic.

Miss Samantha Cox KS1TeacherI have lived, studied andworked in London formostofmy life. I have adegreeinHistory,andIhavecompletedaPGCEinPrimaryEducation,bothattheUniversityofSurreyRoehampton. Ibeganmyteachingcareerat a‘FreshStart’schoolininnerLondon,developinganoutdoorcurriculumformyReception (Pre-K)class,andraisingstandardsastheschoolexpandedeachyear.IspentseveralyearsteachingYear1(Kindergarten)andYear3(Grade2)intwootherLondonschools,beforedecidingtotransfermyskillsabroad. In March 2014, I secured a position at St George’s BritishInternationalSchoolinRome.ItaughtbothclassesinKeyStage1,followinga creative curriculum. I have a passion for teaching in the early yearsofchildren’s education, seeing the vast and rapid amount of progress theymake,anddevelopingtheirenthusiasm,confidenceandcuriosity.Duringmysparetime,Iliketogoonlongwalks(whenit’snotraining!)andregularlyparticipateinaerobicsorstepclasses.Ienjoyreadingandvisitingmuseums,ordaytripstohistoricallocations,actingasatourist!Ihaveanincreaseddesiretotravelandexperiencenewcultures,particularlyaftermyinternationalteachingexperience.
