• Nearly 45% of young adults aren’t employed full-time.

• 18 to 29 year olds have the highest underemployment rate since World War II.

• Number of college grads working minimum wage jobs is at highest rate ever.

-AP, US Census, BLS

The Problem - Youth underemployment

The Problem - Where will new jobs come from?

New business startups - the main driver of

job creation - are dying.

• Most new jobs come from startups.

-Small Business Administration (SBA)

• Only half as many new businesses are

being started today as a generation ago.

-Kauffman Foundation

W H A T I FInstead of resume-building classes, we provided templates for youth to adapt quickly, since a resume is a means to an end at this stage?

What skills will people need?

Young people need to know how to:

• Always learn! • Interact + collaborate

• Develop and execute ideas • Take risks (and be OK with failure)

Recommendations:

- Develop skills in critical thinking, insight, and analysis capabilities

- Integrate new-media literacy - Integrate interdisciplinary training

to develop skills and knowledge in a range of subjects

- Use experiential learning and develop soft skills - the ability to collaborate, work in groups, read social cues, respond adaptively

- Learning needs to continue into adulthood

Reflect with your neighbor

Putting it into practice:

Social Emotional Learning

To incorporate SEL in your programs…

Ask a group of youth to redesign your key communications pieces and intake forms.

Ask your staff to immerse in the job-finding experiences of youth…and share what it actually feels like to be an out of school youth.

What are you doing now?

Putting it into practice:

Entrepreneurship

More than 1/3 of workers are freelancers (aka “self-employed” or “entrepreneurs”) – and the number is rising.

-Intuit/Freelancers Union

Over 60% of young adults of color ages 18 to 29 in the United States say they want to start a business, but lack the support and resources to do so. That’s millions of aspiring entrepreneurs.

-Kauffman Foundation/Young Invincibles
