The Zoo Story has been interpreted by some as Christian play with Jerry in the role of Jesus Christ. His suicide has been viewed as Christ's sacrifice, in order to redeem the damned. Allan Lewis remarks that Jerry´s sacrifice is a reminiscence of Apocalypse (Revelation) 3:20
