• The person who develops the concept for and designs a set• Provides design to set construction crew

• Set design is the hub around which all other aspects of the production design revolve.

• Aware of:

• Additional information from the director

• Safety

Set Design Vocabulary

• Set-the onstage physical space and its structures in which the actors perform

• Ground Plan- a top view drawing of the floor plan of a set, usually in scale

• Front View-audience’s view of the stage including colors and patterns

• Scale model-3 dimensional model of the set, based off the ground plan and front view

Set Design should be:

• Informative design- design must communicate the time and place of the play

• Expressive design- design must evoke theme and mood of the play

• Appropriate design-design must be suitable for the play’s action and the performance space

• Usable design-design must be a usable design
