A dodecahedron is a polyhedron It is one of the five platonic solids It is bounded by twelve equilateral pentagons.

A large number of other polyhedra also have 12 sides, but are given other names. Other dodecahedra include the hexagonal bipyramid and the rhombic dodecahedron.

Dodecahedral objects have found some practical applications.

They have played a role in visual arts and in philosophy.

It is usually seen in games and arts.

Some quasicrystals have dodecahedral shape.

Some regular crystals such as garnet and diamond are also said to exhibit "dodecahedral" habit.

In modern role-playing games, the dodecahedron is often used as a twelve-sided die, one of the more common polyhedral dice.

A company invented the polyhedral golf balls using properties of the dodecahedron for more efficient flying. A quick glance at the surface of a golf ball reveals a sea of hexagonal faces.

However, golf balls were originally made with round dimples with two hundred and twenty three indented polygonal faces.

They are used in chemistry. Fullerene models are represented using dodecahedrons.

• Their shape is used to make soccer balls.

In the 18th century the Swiss mathematician Leonhard Euler discovered that if every face of a polyhedron is either a pentagon or a hexagon then it has exactly twelve faces.

A dodecahedron is such a polyhedron

An astronomer called Johannes Kepler argued that the five platonic solids must be related to the existence of the six known planets.

In Euclidean geometry, a Platonic solid is a regular, convex polyhedron. The faces are congruent, regular polygons, with the same number of faces meeting at each vertex. There are exactly five solids which meet those criteria.

He claimed that the orbits of these planets are related to the nesting of the five platonic solids inside spheres

Kepler also saw that the dodecahedron has a relationship with its twelve faces and the twelve zodiac signs. Because of this relationship, he argued that the dodecahedron must represent the universe.
