Artesania en Coiro

Escola Municipal de Artes e Oficios

Concello de Vigo

While a great process of industrialization was taking place in the city of Vigo, "The cooperative", an association of craftsmen that provided with medical-pharmaceutical aid to its partners, takes the initiative to create a school where workers would become more skilled and educated

Thus the School of Arts and Crafts was born, its first course opened on September 26, 1886 at the headquarters of the Calle del Circo. This institution, second oldest in the city, will host the first City Library, the Vigo High School Institute, the School of Industry, Trade School, and the School of Seamanship among others

In 1900, thanks to the donation of Jose Garcia Barbon begins the course in its current location, the building built by architect Michel Pacewicz. In its donation to Council of Vigo is clearly stated the idea of donating the buildings in exchange for "free education for workers and women and the maintenance of a suitable place for the Public Library."

Today specialties taught at the School are: Ceramics, Binding, Silkscreen Printing, Craft Making of Musical Instruments (in three specialties: Galician Popular Instruments, Old Lutheria and Zanfoña), Fashion and Clothing, Goldsmith, Drawing, Painting, Sculpture and carving in wood, Bobbin Lace and leather crafts. All of them gathered around a library specialized in Arts & Crafts

During the early 50's Embossed leather appears as an specialty within the area of "Lessons for Women", the first teacher was Mrs. Andrea Castro who would become a teacher of this school for over 50 years.

Until 2009 and for more than 30 years the specialty teacher was Virginia Gonzalez, great embossment worker, whose job kept the technique alive in the province of Pontevedra in Galicia, since the School was the only center in Galicia where it could be studied.

In November 2009 Teacher Pepe Pereira joined the staff and in June 2010 by resolution of the Governing Board of the School the subject changes its name to "Leather Craft" with the idea of expanding the skills and the developed knowledge.
