Artist’s Statement

The photographs were taken by me, and I am NOT a professional photographer! Some were taken with a 35 mm camera and others with a digital camera. All were scanned or directly downloaded to my computer, then formatted in Photoshop.

I do not have any early work. Most of my pieces have been sold, given away, or done on site (murals). I have very little in my possession.

When I paint, I like to work fast and loose, so I put down the under painting in acrylics. Acrylics also keep the under layers vibrant in color. I do public work in acrylics due to the fast drying time and easy cleanup. I like the manipulation and finished look of oils, so I complete many paintings in oils. I enjoy working primarily in a variety of 2-D media, but 3-D is not out of my realm.

I like to express my feelings about societal and political issues, often with humor and satire. I think thatmy art is a coping tool for me. Hopefully, it can serve asa tension diffuser for the viewer as well.

My styles vary. I have not really locked into any one particular method or look. I use the method and mediumthat best suits the subject matter.

Art is an evolutionary process. There is unlimited potential and I will never reach mine. Thank you for looking at my work.

I have a headac

he.

This is a small piece,10X10 inches. It is done in oil on canvas.

ANOTHER NIGHT AT THE ROADHOUSE

This piece is acrylic and oil on loose canvas. It is "life sized", at 54"X

36".

The entire piece that you are looking at is painted.

Virtual Munchies

This trompe l’oiel is actually painted directly onto the door of

a refrigerator.

It is located in a guesthouse at the Walden International Horse Farm in Lexington, KY. It is done

in acrylic.

SpectatorsThis piece is acrylic and oil on canvas. It's size is 36" X 20". It was commissioned by the Shoemaker Foundation, a charity founded in jockey Willie Shoemaker's name. They raise

money for injured jockeys and their families..The painting represents the outsiders in a social caste system, where some are desperate

to be an insider.

Does a Bear **** in the Woods?

This is painted on the wall of a men ’s room at a stock brokerage firm in Lexington, KY. It is life

sized.

Some powerful people need be reminded that they are only

human.

There is a subtle reference to phallic “power”but also

impotence in our capitalist culture.

Money and power aren’t everything in life -- they can always go

down the crapper.

•Denial

This painting is done in oils on canvas. The size is 24” X

18”.

The subject deals with the family dynamics of

alcoholism and abuse.I used a lot of energy in this

piece.

The Spirit of ColtraneThis painting is acrylic on canvas. It is 48"x 30". It was commissioned by a fellow jazz lover in

Cleveland, Ohio.

Newton Boys with black dog

This portrait is done in chalk pastels. It is

worked from a photograph. The size is

24” X 18”.

I did this piece for a surgeon friend who

removed my gallbladder for free.

Models, Plastic or Otherwise

This large (48”X42”) piece is done in charcoal and chalk pastels on flat

paper.

I wanted to show a cultural tendency to objectify the female

body.

Sex Object

A collection of of “objects”sit on a

table.

Work is done in ink washes, pen and

some resist (rubber cement, crayon and wite out). Size is 3

0”x 26”.

Quick peak

• This piece is a quick gesture drawing. It is

graphite on paper, size is 24” X 16”.

Shy girl

• I love the simplicity of this sketch. It portrays youth,

insecurity and innocence. It is graphite on paper, 18” X 8”.

Je ne’regrette rien.

• When I drew this model, I couldn’t help but notice that she seemed to

be very confident and almost haughty and detached.

• She always brought Edith Piaf for background music . I think that she

lived in her own world.

• This piece is 26” X 24”, graphite on paper.

Vineyard

This is an alphabet that I designed for a typography class

at EKU. Another version is in color; greens, blues and

purples.

EKU Faculty Show Catalog

This catalog was done in ink, marker,

construction paper and stencils, the old-

fashioned way, without computer

assistance.

Done in 1992.

“Stupid Dick”This bumper sticker expresses my disdain for the practice of driving with a cell

phone glued to your ear. I obviously designed the piece to resemble a children’s book and child’s drawing, indicating the notion that even a child could recognize the stupidity. The figure is very primitive and generalized as a child

might do. This was done in Illustrator. I’ve sold these on Ebay.
