CraigRoberts,now inhis seventh seasonas theBall Statehead soccer coach, hasoverseen consis-tentgrowthintheprogramsincecomingtoMunciein 2010. He has returned the Cardinals to prominencein theMid-American Conference, highlighted by aleague regular season championship in 2015. Roberts also serves as an assistant coach withtheHaitiWomen’sNationalTeam,havingbeenap-pointedtothatpositioninthespringof2014.Inthatrole, he has coached against national teams fromcountries such as the United States, Mexico andCanada.Hehascoachedagainstsomeoftheworld’sbestplayers,includingAbbyWambach,CarliLloyd,AlexMorganandHopeSolo. As part of his workwith the Haiti program, Roberts serves asheadcoachoftheU-17women’snationalteam. The2015seasonwasthebestyetforBallStateunderRoberts’direction. TheCardinalsfinishedone shyof the school record forwinsat14-3-3andclaimedtheirfirstMACregularseasontitlesince2007with a10-1 leaguemark. The10 conferencewinswere themosteverforaBallStateteam. TheCardinalsreachedashighasNo.68intheRPIandfinishedtheyearatNo.75.Theysetschoolrecordswithaneight-gamewin-ningstreakandanine-gameunbeatenstreak. Foralltheirsuccess,theywererewardedwitharecord-tyingfiveplayersontheAll-MACFirstTeam,includingtheprogram’sfirsteverMACDefensivePlayeroftheYear(LorinaWhite). TheCardinalsareacombined36-17-9overthepast threesea-sons,includingapairof11-wincampaignsin2013and2014.BothofthoseteamsreachedatleastthesemifinalsoftheMACTourna-ment,with the2013 squadbecoming thefirstBall State team toreach the championship game. The Cardinals came up just short againstaWesternMichiganteamthatwentontodefeatMarquetteinthefirstroundoftheNCAATournament. The2014squadledtheMACinscoringwith32goalsandfinishedsecondintheleague’sWestDivision,markingBallState’sbestfin-ish since the league implemented divisions for soccer in 2010. The 2015 teamtopped thatbybringinghomeboth theWestDivisionandoverallconferencetitles. Robertsownsanoverallrecordof60-43-19inhissixyearsatBallState.TheCardinalswere4-13-1intheyearpriortohisarrivalbuthave demonstrated steady improvement ever since. For his nine-yearheadcoachingcareer,includingthefirstfouratUTMartin,Rob-ertsis94-70-31. Strong defense has been a hallmark of the Ball State programunderRoberts.TheCardinalshaverecorded42shutoutsduringhistenure, including nine in each of the past three seasons (the school recordis10).The2015teamranked21stinthecountrywitha.623goals against average. The Cardinals have also excelled in the classroom under Roberts, earning an NSCAA Team AcademicAwardineachofhisyearswiththeprogram.Robertshas coached six Capital One Academic All-District se-lections,includingSkylarChewthreetimes.In2012,ChewbecamethefirstBallStatesoccerplayertobenamedafirst-teamAcademicAll-American.TheCar-dinalshavealsohad30AcademicAll-MACselectionsand sixNSCAA Scholar All-Region honorees duringhistimeatBallState. Before coming to Ball State, Roberts spent fourseasonsatUTMartinasthemostsuccessfulcoachin the program’s history.
