The Reformation

The Reformation put the membership of the Catholic Church in jeopardy. Therefore, the Catholic Church took steps to change itself to keep Catholic believers loyal.

The Council of Trent, 1563

• What do you think they are discussing at this council?

"After meeting from 1545-1563 AD, the Council of Trent, called for by Pope Paul III, has agreed upon the following reforms in practices for the Roman Catholic Church:

1. The selling of Indulgences shall be strictly forbidden.2. Simony, the sale of church titles (bishop, cardinal) is also forbidden. However, the following decisions are final concerning Church authority: 1. Only the Pope and the Church may interpret the Bible.2. All Roman Catholic Church services must be held in Latin.”
