Last ‘lost and found’I’m finishing the Lost and Found segemnt ofDriven— I gave it anotehr good go with agreat prize thanks to NZ Classic Driver but
one or two entries don’t warrant the effort. The last winner is Eugene Nortje — his
correct answer as follows: As far as I can findout the top picture is of a 1914 GWK B-Type.The bottom picture seems to be a later,
early 1920’s GWK . . . My guess would be a1922.According to Wikipedia they got their name
from their founders, Arthur Grice, J TalfourdWood and C.M. Keiller.A NZ Classic Driver voucher is on the way.I’m also award another voucher to Graeme
Cairns, my most regular (and always correct)entrant. He also tells the best stories — here’s his
answer: Now, as regards this month'squestion, wasn't there one of these at that
huge veteran display in Te Awamutu?I remember marvelling for ages at a fawn or
pale yellow vehicle with an infinitely-variablegearing system that seemed to be constructedlike a movable differential, but with somethingakin to sanding disks where the teeth wouldnormally be.Brilliantly simple, though I imagine you'd
have to replace the friction surfaces fairlyfrequently, as there'd be a lot of scuff. The name of the quaint little lightweight
European-looking machine also caught myeye, as it was almost exactly my initials, though I wasn't aware at the time that it wasBritish.GWK I seem to remember was the make. From GWC.He also apologised for not entring the
previous month — the reason being the carwas ‘just too ugly’.
Dreaming of Targa -what about leasing?
Want to tick the TargaNew Zealand tarmacmotor rally off your
bucket list but don’t have a car?Targa event director PeterMartin can help. From small beginnings four
years ago his ‘hire’ fleet ofevent and tour-ready lease carsnow numbers four, rangingfrom a 1.3 litre Ford Ka, BMW328i coupe and classic FordEscort (pictured) suitable forthemain competition event to alatemodel BMW 1 SeriesMcoupe perfect for the Targatour.Last yearMrMartin took the
annual six-day tarmac road rallyevent to the South Island tocelebrate its 20th anniversary. This year it is back in the NorthIsland and— for the first timein the event’s 21 years, includesover 1000 kms of closed specialstages. If that isn’t added incentive
to turn the dream of doing theevent into realityMrMartinsays he doesn’t knowwhat is,hence the time and effort heand his team have put this yearinto expanding the line of leasecars.“It’s about taking the ‘buts’
out of the equation,” saysMrMartin, whose own introductionto the event was as a
competitor.“One, obviously, we hear a
lot is ‘I’d love to do Targa but Idon’t have a suitable car.’ Theother, and this is onewe’rehearingmore andmore, andnot just from first-timers, is ‘I’dlove do Targa this year ‘but’ Idon’t have the time.”For this seasonMrMartin
has put together a range oflease options from ‘take-the-car-away-and-run-it-yourself’ to‘turn-up-on-the-day-and-drive-and-we’ll-do-the-rest.’Cost varies from car to car
and package to package andfrom event to event andfeedback from those who haveleased a car before is positive.“For some it’s a chance to
‘dip a toe in the water,’ forothers it’s the ‘bucket list’ thing.“What we have seen from
the Targa Tour though is thatonce you get the Targa bug it ishard to shake off.“Before actually doing an
event it’s easy to say ‘I’ll just dothe one to get it out of mysystem.’ Once you’ve done onethough you can’t wait to doanother.Which is why somanyof our competitors keep comingback.”This year’s six-day event
starts in Auckland onMonday,October 26 (Labour Day) and
finishes in Palmerston North onSaturday, October 31.In-between are 35 closed
special stages comprising atotal of 1067kms linked by1431.7kms of touring stageswith overnight stops inHamilton, New Plymouth (twonights), Palmerston North andHavelock North.Included are some classic
stages from previousmainTarga events like GlenMurray,Kawhia, Inglewood,Whangamomona, Gentle AnnieandMangatainoka.Response from the event’s
many regulars has beenimmediate and enthusiasticwith defending Targa SouthIslandwinner Glenn Inkster andco-driver SpencerWinn one ofthe first pairings to confirmtheir entry.Others like former Targa
Rotorua winner Leigh Hopperand co-driver SimonKirkpatrick, and high-profilemotorsport personality ClarkProctor and co-driver SueO’Neill, have also been quick tosign up.Interest in the concurrent
but non-competitive Targa Touris also again high.Entry information is
available on the event websitewww.targa.co.nz

German built Insigniasignals future for Holden
BY DEAN TAYLOR
Holden Insignia VXR
By now we all know Holden islosing the Aussie-builtCommodore from it’s line-up
in the near future and there hasbeen much speculation about itsreplacement.
As part of the global GeneralMotors empire there are a numberof choices, and the return ofEuropean-sourced cars to Holdenshowrooms this year is probably astrong signal of the company’sfuture.
Newest arrival is the stunningInsignia VXR sedan — now on theyard at Rosetown Holden.
A replacement Commodore?I’m not sure — certainly not as it is.
It is classed as a medium sizedcar by Holden — the Commodoreis a big car, so there is a goodchance it could be replaced bysomething from the Americanstable.
But the Aussie journalists arefavouring a development of theGerman car as the replacement.
They say it means theCommodore will come full circle asthe original 1978 model was adown-under version of two ofOpel’s German family sedans —
the medium sized Reckford with aSenator front end to fit six andeight cylinder engines.
In the Insignia VXR the driverand front seat passenger have allthe room and comfort they canhandle, but the back is for smallerpeople or short trips.
And fuel economy isn’t thegreatest — but what a car theInsignia VXR is.
It is built by GM Opel inGermany and is the first timeHolden has offered an all-wheel-drive and turbochargedperformance sedan.
The 2.8-litre V6 turbochargedengine produces 239kW of powerand 435Nm of torque. Six-speedautomatic transmission and all-wheel-drive are standard.
The Insignia VXR also introducesthree Holden technology firsts —adaptive cruise control, lanechange alert and auto emergencybraking.
Driving the Insignia VXR is a trulyenjoyable experience. It combinesEuropean styling, comfort andhandling with amazing power andperformance.
And then you discover you arein ‘normal’ mode, and there is aSport button for more oomph anda VXR button for the brave.
It is an inclusive drivingexperience — the exhaust note isdelicious, the information from thegauges is fantastic and the feel isamazing.
The price for all this wonder isabout $70k — you can buy a morepowerful Commodore for that, butits real rivals would also beEuropean models from the likes ofBMW, Audi and Mercedes, and theVXR stacks up.
It is fair to say we haven’t seenthe likes of the Insignia onmainstream car yards here before, and it is the vast array of hi-techequipment that really sets it apart.

Holden Insignia VXRbreaks tech barrierH olden’s European
sourced Insignia VXRhas the highest specifi-
cation level of any Holden — sowhat do you get for yourmoney?
Adaptive cruise control, lane change alert and autoemergency braking joins otherpremium features such asadaptive forward lighting, blindspot alert and the FlexRidesuspension system.
The three performance set-tings — standard, sport andVXR — alter accelerator andgear shift response, steeringand suspension.
In normal mode the AWDsetting favours FWD — in thesportier settings the bias istowards RWD.
The next generation MyLinkinfotainment system is stand-ard with an eight-inchtouchscreen display, satellitenavigation and a premiumaudio system with sevenspeakers.
Adaptive cruise control usesa radar sensor to monitor thedistance to the traffic aheadand maintains a selectable gapand desired speed automatic-ally.
The same technology is inte-
grated into a forward collisionalert system and the car’sautomatic emergency braking, which can mitigate the severityof some front-end crashes byautomatically braking thevehicle for an imminentcollision.
This feature also includesintegrated brake assist , whichmay activate when driversbegin braking quickly. Thishelps to avoid or mitigate theseverity of the collision byautomatically boosting thedriver’s braking to the neces-sary level, based upon thespeed of approach and dis-tance to a target ahead.
Other safety features arelane departure warning, rearcross traffic alert and side blindspot alert.
In terms of collisions, anyvehicle approaching fast frombehind can be highly danger-ous especially when a driver ispulling out to overtake orentering a stream of traffic.
Radar with a rearwardrange of up to 70m detectsand warns of fast-approachingvehicles in either left or rightparallel lanes with a visualsignal in the respectiveexterior mirror.
Specification highlights for the Insignia VXR include 20-inch alloywheels, heated Recaro leather-appointed front sports seats, frontand rear park assist, a rear view camera, dual-zone climatecontrol, passive entry with push button start, rain sensor wipersand auto headlamps. The adaptive forward lighting systemcombines bi-xenon headlamps and LED daytime running lights.

TOWN and Country Motors owner Les Murrell (centre) with his father Welby (right), who was in charge ofthe upgrade, and salesman Chase Good who also took a hands-on role in the project.
Big investmentin Kihikihi used car yardThe used car yard has been an
institution in Kihikihi’s LyonStreet for decades — but
new owner Les Murrell thought itwas time to bring it into the 21stCentury.
He’s in his fifth year as owner ofTown and Country Motors andbought the property outright acouple of years after starting out.
Mr Murrell says it was a bigdecision to rip up the forecourtand renovate the office andsurrounds, but now that the job isalmost complete he thinks it wasthe best decision.
“We’re getting plenty ofcomments about how great itlooks,” says Mr Murrell.
“It is certainly much better interms of presentation of vehiclesand a good environment to workin.”
Mr Murrell says he’s had lots ofsupport from the local communityand looks forward to thatcontinuing.
He roped in his builder fatherWelby Murrell to look after the
project and is also proud of thefact that he and his salesmanChase Good also pitched in.
The entire job was done whilethe business was still operating, soit was completed in stages toensure everything was secure.
First stage of the upgrade wasto build a retaining wall and newfence along the new backboundary of the car yard.
He says for some reason theyard wasn’t square, even thoughthere was land available.
When the old fence was takendown he was amazed how muchextra room had been created.
Then the yard was dug up so itcould be given a gentle contourand new services installedunderground.
Mr Murrell says there was asurprising amount of ‘stuff’ underthe metal yard — includingfoundations of a previousbuilding.
All the wiring for new LEDlighting, security cameras andsensors and pipes for water for
washing cars and the yard wererun on the perimeter to ensurethey could be accessed in thefuture with minimal disturbance.
Heavy duty fill was levelled andthe entire yard was paved.
Meanwhile the block office wasclad in timber and a deck built uparound the side and back tocomplete the upgrade to the front.
Mr Murrell says there are a fewfinishing touches for the office and
it will be complete.Behind the yard a new concrete
slab for the car wash area wasinstalled and future plans include anew workshop and covered washarea.

Toyota Aurion Sportivo SX6
Sporty theme forbig Toyota AurionSporty theme forbig Toyota Aurion
U nbelievably it has beenseven years since I havedriven a Toyota Aurion
Sportivo — and that onebelonged to the guy picturedon the page opposite.
Les Murrell was runningWaikato Toyota at that timeand had sold the car to hisparents — and they let me testdrive it for these pages.
From that drive, and thelaunch the year before, I foundthe Aurion to be a great car.
It had an excellent 3.5litre V6and six-speed automatictransmission package, greatbuild quality and space andperformance to rival Falcon,Commodore and the other bigJapanese models.
That hasn’t changed, although unusually power andtorque are down a tad to
200kW and 336Nm.I drove the new Aurion
Sportivo SX6 from WaikatoToyota — the mid range modelof three in the line-up.
This model features sportsstyled body kit, sportysuspension, seats and pedals, and a dual exhaust system withsports-style diffuser.
It sits on gloss black 18”alloys running meaty 225/45rubber — I like the look.
Front wheel drive in a largecar still isn’t the norm, but it iswell sorted in that regard anddrives exceptionally well.
For its size, claimedeconomy of 9.3l/100km isacceptable, and with a 70 litretank you’ll need a pit stop foryourself before the car does.
That level of economy wasquite achievable.
The SX6 will cruise all daywithout any fuss, and with aterrific sound system, dual zoneclimate control, touch screen orsteering wheel control optionsfor many functions and cruise
control you’ll be chewing upthe road in bliss.
There’s plenty of room forextra bodies in the back, and anew addition of a rear windowsun shade if it gets a bit hot.
Toyota are clever withstorage, and the Aurion is noexception.
As well as a huge boot andvariable seating layouts, thereare numerous cup holders,
door pockets and extra storagespaces.
All the latest equipment fordriver information andconnectability is included.
Reversing cameras and parkassist is pretty standard thesedays, but I especially likeToyota’s moving guidelinereversing display which is veryprecise once you learn to trustit.
The Aurion range has a5-star ANCAP safety rating isachieved thanks to animpressive array of braking, airbag, strengthening andsafety belt equipment.
Naturally you get Toyota’slegendary reliability asstandard and check out thedeals being offered now ontheir passenger range — it’s anattractive option.

WAITOMO AERO CLUB ANNUAL PRIZEGIVING
The Waitomo Aero Club in TeKuiti held its annual prizegiving recently for the
competition year ending July 2015.“Our club is operating very well
and it is good to see that we aregoing from strength to strength,”says club captain Paul Grayson.
“We have continuing success atclub, regional and national level.”
The club had a goodattendance at the Central Rally heldin Matamata last November.
A highlight was to finish runnerup in the Wigram Challenge teamevent.
Cecil Hickman was first in thesenior landing, Evan Harris won thenon instrument circuit, Trevor Hallwas second in the instrument flyingand Anthony Johnston placed thirdin the junior landing.
Harris also won the GPSnavigation and went on to gain avery credible second place at thisyear’s Nationals held in Whitianga.
Waitomo Aero Club membersare very spirited and enjoy pitchingtheir skills against othercompetitors.
“We have a lot of fun doing so,”says Mr Grayson.
He says, like himself, nearly
three quarters of the place gettersfor this year’s prize giving live andwork in the Waipa district.
“We all enjoy flying and we areall very competitive.
“Winners have to toil hard tosecure a club trophy.
At this year’s prizegiving theywere presented by Aero Clubspatron Hugh Baxter.
The club also held twoadditional competitions.
They were best bomb, whichinvolved dropping a fake bombfrom an aircraft at a height at 300feet where the closet to the groundtarget wins.
Mr Grayson says it may soundeasy, however moving through thesky at 180km/h 100 meters fromthe ground in all types of windconditions, dispatching the“bomb” whilst flying can be a littlechallenging.
The event was won by PeterVoyce.
There was also a veterans spotlanding competition and this
involved, when landing, putting thewheels of an aircraft closest to amat on the ground.
This year was taken out with aperfect score from Waipa residentPeter Bouma.
Each month throughout theyear the club competes in bombingand spot landing competitions.
A point system earnscompetitors one point to compete, plus an additional one, two or threepoints for the top threecompetitors. Results for 2015: Bombing —Cecil Hickman (Te Kuiti), 1; PaulGrayson (Waipa), 2; GeorgeThompson (Waipa), 3.Spot Landing — Cecil Hickman, 1;John Lissington (Waipa), 2; PaulGrayson, 3.Forced Landing Without Power— John Carter (Pio Pio), 1; TimRumble (Te Kuiti), 2; RossWeinberg (Waipa), 3.Navigation — Paul Grayson, 1;George Thompson, 2; Peter Voyce(Pio Pio), 3.
