NEW DELHI, Feb 24:

The first working day of theBudget session of Rajya Sabha wasa washout today with the Housefailing to transact any business dueto the continued uproar created byBSP members, led by their chiefMayawati, over the suicide of Dalitstudent Rohith Vemula.

Amid repeated adjournments, tempers ran high whenever theHouse met for brief periods andeven saw clashes betweenMayawati and HRD Minister SmritiIrani who accused the opposition ofusing a "dead child" (Rohith) as "apolitical tool and strategy".

Mayawati, who wanted inclu-sion of a Dalit member in a com-mittee that is probing Vemula'sdeath, accused the Government oftrying to "neglect" his issue, whileIrani said she was ready to replyto all questions and if the BSPleader was not satisfied, "I amready to behead myself and lay iton your feet."

Trouble started as soon asthe House met for the day withMayawati speaking aboutVemula issue.

Deputy Chairman PJ Kuriensaid the issue is already listedfor a discussion later in the dayand if the House agreed, it couldbe taken up right away.

He asked the Leader ofOpposition Ghulam Nabi Azadand others who agreed to take upthe discussion right then.

However, Mayawati contin-ued to speak, pressing for ananswer as to whether a Dalitwould be included in a committee

that is probing Vemula's death.Minister of State for

Similar scenes prevailed andthe House was adjourned repeat-edly after it met for brief periods. The House was finally adjournedfor the day soon after 4 PM.

Before adjournment for theday, Mayawati dubbed theVemula incident as an "insult to25 crore Dalits" in the countryand wanted resignation of twounion ministers over it, sackingof the Vice Chancellor ofHyderabad University besidesinclusion of a Dalit member in

the probe committee."Since the time, BJP came to

power at the Centre, nefariousmeans are being used to imposeRSS ideology," she said addingthat prestigious institutions likeHyderabad University, AligarhMuslim University, Jamia Miliaand Jawaharlal Nehru University(JNU) were being interfered with.

At the same time, she said, suicide by Rohith is not the firstcase and many Dalit students havecommitted suicide in the pastincluding when Congress-ledUPA was in power at the Centre.
