TIDBITS® CELEBRATES THE EQUINOX
SPRING IS HERE!by Rick Dandes
Lewis Grizzard, the famous Atlanta author once wrote, “Spring time is the land awakening. The March winds are the morning yawn.” That about sums it up for us. Springtime brings relief from winter. It’s all about renewal, warmth and new beginnings. So sit back and enjoy, as Tidbits wel-comes in the new season this week. • Thestartofspringisseenbythevernalequinox,
which occurs on March 20 or 21 each year the Northern Hemisphere. Oddly enough, this date isalsotheautumnalequinox—thefirstdayofautumn—intheSouthernHemisphere.
• Turnabout is fair play: the autumnal equinoxin the north (which occurs in late September), is the also first day of spring south of theequator.
•Nokidding:Spring fever isnota figmentofyour imagination. It is a real physical condition that occurs when a sudden warm spell follows a long cold period. As the temperature rises, the body has to get rid of heat; there’s a dilation orexpansionofthebloodvesselssothatbloodcan be carried to the body surface where heat canbelostquickly.Somepeopleexperienceanenergeticfeeling.Hence,springfever.

TIDBITS GETS FIRED UP ABOUT
NATIONAL BOSS DAYby Stanley Drummond
Bosses are people, too. (Really!) And every year on October 16, America pays tribute to them.• Actually, National Boss Day was created in
1958 by an Illinois secretary named Patricia Haroski. She chose October 16 because it was her father’s birthday. Her father also happened to be her boss at the time. Nevertheless, she felt that bosses in general were underappreciated, and registered the date with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce as an official observance.
• Interestingly enough, a 2005 survey done by an international human resources consulting firm revealed that the majority of employees would not trade places with their boss. The primary reason given was the change that would result between them and their co-workers. They could no longer ignore or laugh at any slackers in their department; they’d be responsible for any poor performers.
• Hallmark started selling Boss Day cards in 1979. While they don’t reveal actual sales figures, they do disclose that the “holiday” is poised to break into the list of top 10 card-send-ing events within the next few years.

Why is the Jewish holiday of Passovcr in the spring? According to Jewish belief, it is no coincidence. God took the people out of bondage in Egypt at a time of year when there was perfect weather. In other words: at spring time. Hence the celebration during the spring months.

Four high school boys affl icted with spring fever skipped morning classes. After lunch they reported to the teacher that they had a fl at tire. Much to their relief she smiled and said, “Well, you missed a test today so take seats apart from one another and take out a piece of paper.” Still smiling, she waited for them to sit down. Then she said: “First question: Which tire was fl at?”
The advice I am about to give cannot be learned in any MBA in America. If you could only regain the love of a puppy you have buried deep within since childhood, you could not handle all the business. I have a Puppy Prescription for you. Enter a room wagging your tail with enthusiasm, excitement and glee. Know no stranger. Give affection and attention to all. Have apt attention. Be non-judgemental. Withhold no love. Love everyone unconditionally. Hold no grudges. Have total self-esteem. Do not accept being ignored. Always be happy. Never complain. Sue no one. Take no depositions. Be not concerned by the Dow Jones. Do not worry about a recession. Always be truthful and totally honest. Hold no resentments. Greet everyone as a friend. Then all work becomes Puppy Play.

Many of us take for granted the ease with which we can find a card at the local gift shop, have our hair coiffed at the corner salon, grab a bite at a familiar eatery or get copies made while having a friendly conversation with the proprietor. But what if it were all gone? Poof! Not if the members of the New RAMS of Glenrock can help it. In fact, many merchants are going out of their way to accommodate customers, thinking up new and innovative ways to keep the doors open and business bustling. That’s good news for consumers. Sometimes, it’s not just the price of an item or service that is the bottom line for customers, but it’s the total value of the experience. RAMS dedicated to the community and businesses of Glenrock/C o n v e r s e C o u n t y . . . b r i n g i n g exciting weekend events, annual celebrations and the upholding of the organization’s values to preserve and protect offers countless patrons to the district the kind
hospitality, and the sense of community that is truly Glenrock.
Glenrock merchants are in a class among themselves, adding character and diversity to the city while putting their customers first. Each customer experience is distinct and knowing that Glenrock businesses care about patrons as individuals is an added benefit that is hard to come by elsewhere.

Last-Minute Tax Savings
If you're still working on your taxes and looking for some last minute deductions to reduce your tax bill, here are a few to consider:State taxes: If you paid state taxes for the year 2008 when you filed last year, you can deduct that amount from your Federal return.
Property tax: Until recently, only those taxpayers who itemize deductions (Schedule A) could deduct their property tax. Now, even if you take the standard deduction, you can deduct some or all of the property tax you paid in 2009. There's a limit, however. You can deduct the amount
that is lower: the taxes you paid, or up to $500 for single or $1,000 for filing jointly.
Charitable deductions: If you tend to save all your receipts, it could be worth your while to look for those related to charity. You can deduct your expenses for quite a number of things: the cost of ingredients for the cakes and pies you baked, mileage at 14 cents per mile, postage for mailings, and more.
Home improvements: If you made energy-saving improvements to your home, you can deduct part of the cost. Windows, water heaters, doors and more are included. (Unfortunately this doesn't apply to everyday appliances such as dishwashers and refrigerators.) Each item has a different limit on how much can be deducted. Go online to www.energystar.gov and scroll down to Tax Credits for Energy Efficiency. Read the particulars on your appliance or energy-saving product. Home purchase: If you bought your first home in 2009 before Nov. 7, you could be eligible for a credit of up to $8,000. If you are a repeat buyer who purchased a home after Nov. 7, 2009, and who will close on a house by July 1, you could be eligible for a credit up $6,500 if you've lived in your home for at least five years. This government program has changed since it was first started in 2008 with a $7,500 interest-free loan to first-time homebuyers. If you've bought a home at during that time, check to see if you qualify.

Why is the Jewish holiday of Passovcr in the spring? According to Jewish belief, it is no coincidence. God took the people out of bondage in Egypt at a time of year when there was perfect weather. In other words: at spring time. Hence the celebration during the spring months.
MARCH ISNATIONAL CRAFT MONTH
birthstone: aquamarine fl ower: daffodil
Everybody is somebody’s somebody
THE PUPPY PRESCRIPTION
Start winter cleanup of your lawn when the grass is no longer sopping wet and planting beds stop being a sea of mud. Rake your lawn to get rid of dead growth, stray leaves, twigs and winter debris and let light and air to the soil level, encouraging the grass to grow.
