What Causes Tides? How does the moon and oceans relate?

Day at the beachYour family arrives at the beach at 9:00 am. You notice that the water is really far out and shallow leaving lots of space on the beach. Where should your family set up the beach blanket, towel, and umbrella?

What are tides?Tides are very long-period waves that move through the oceans in response to the forces exerted by the moon and sun.

What are tides?Tidal current consists of:

Flood current - tide coming in

Ebb current - tide going out

Why do we have tides? The Moon’s gravitational force pulls on the ocean which is liquid and very fluid.

The area on the earth lined up with the moon would experience a high tide

The Earth is rotating though so the area’s experiencing high tides shift throughout the day

How many tides?

Two high and two low tides every 24 hours

What are Spring and Neap Tides?Spring Tide- Occurs when the Earth, Moon & Sun are lined up(during New and Full Moon) *Tides are more extreme

Neap Tide- Occurs when the Earth, Moon & Sun are in a right angle. (during 1st & 3rd quarter moons)*Tides are less extreme

What are Spring and Neap Tides?

Watch this simulation to see the tides occurring throughout the month.

Let’s look at some pictures of places experiencing high

& low tides

How do we track tides?

NOAA’s Center for Operational Oceanographic Products and Services (CO-OPS) collects and shares reliable timely tides, water levels, and currents.

Using their real-time data, scientists can forecast, make predictions and make analyses that will help protect the coastal communities and ecosystems.

North Carolina Tides

CO-OPS tracks NC tides from 6 different locations seen here. We’re going to look more closely at the Beaufort location

This past Saturday there were two high tides and two low tides at Beaufort, NC.
