Tips and Tricks to Collect and Disseminate Data

Base data is more and more detailed

GIS software is more user friendly

Augmented by other data

In the fire service basically it’s a building diagram or diagram of other hazard (a map) with data associated with that building or feature

Sounds like GIS!

Also sounds like GEODESIGN!

Increases firefighter safetyMany NIOSH firefighter fatality reports cites lack of

a pre-fire plan as a major problem

Provides information for first responders on an emergency scene

Use graphics program

AutoCAD

Visio

Third party software

Database maintained separately

Access or SQL Server

Tied into GIS with creating link from layer to file or reporting against database

Usually geocoded point file

Hand drawn for years

Or in CAD program

Not updated

Hard to tell when changed happen

Not tied into GIS

Duplicate work done with mapping and pre-incident planning

Hydrants

Streets

Etc.

Tied into GIS

Features maintained as separate layers

Layouts are easy to change

Output possible to many platforms

Symbols easy to change globally

Not out of style

Can use

aerial image

blank preplan map from base

Can use digital pen to collect data (Adapx by Capturx)

Use Bing, Google, or local GIS Browser

Mark up image

GOOD NOT SO GOOD

Cheap!

Easy to use

Can mark up

Hard to manage

Duplicating work (except with digital pen)

ArcGIS Mobile comes with ArcView level license

Geared towards “task” level

Check out and sync data

Cloud based solution sitting on top of ArcGIS Server

Edit through the browser

PROS CONS

Device agnostic

Easily shareable• ArcGIS• Google Earth• Bing Maps

Increases Common Operating Picture

Can take advantage of several sources of data streams

Still need local application (ArcGIS Desktop)

Can be used to Edit raw dataClean up field data

ESRI Add-In

Output to paper

Make sure GPS is enabled

For features on the side of the building take a picture from approx. 20 feet away

For features on the ground take picture above image

Download “ArcPhoto” from ESRI Resource Center

Make sure the image

Challenges

Can’t be inside

Location accuracy is ~60-70 %

How to disseminate

PaperUse Map Book to

manage

Map Viewer ArcReader ArcEngine App

ArcGIS Explorer

Can export to another format like

JPG

PDF

Less technical to distribute

Challenge

Printing Costs

Paper

Should be ArcObjects based

Map Object based programs can view data if the programming is robust

Examples

Incident View

Adashi

GeoComm

Remote Access

Etc.

Programs

ArcGIS Explorer

ArcGlobe

Google Earth

Use Sketchup to augment

Not ready for the rigs…. Yet

Internet

Computer speed

Using a combination of

ArcGIS

Sketchup

Google Earth

Can help in Tactics training and PIA
