Tips for Peaceful Co-Tips for Peaceful Co-ParentingParenting

•An experienced child and family therapist, Miriam Galindo, PsyD, provides co-parenting counseling through her private office in Irvine, California.

In addition, Miriam Galindo, PsyD, serves as a counselor with Families in Transition, where she and Dr. Amy Stark provide a variety of co-parenting and reunification courses.

Co-parenting, or shared parenting, refers to the process of collaboration between divorced parties to raise their children.

A team-oriented practice, it requires peaceful communication and a willingness to come to consensus on child-rearing decisions.

•If emotional conflicts have made this kind of communication difficult, the parents may have to spend extra effort to keep their feelings about each other away from the parenting.

A solid way to begin this process is to think of the children as the center of and reason for co-parenting.

This provides the motivation to work on communication difficulties with the other person.

In turn, it can help the parents to come up with a clearly delineated and child-focused plan for decision making.

•When the parents have a guide to which they can refer, decisions are more likely to happen smoothly and consistently.

This supports the main goal of co-parenting, which is to provide a peaceful, stable home environment for children of divorce.
