EMERITUS PROFESSOR RISABURO NAKAI
December 4, 1898-
Professor Risaburo Nakai retired on his sixty-third birthday, December 4, in
1961, after 25 year's continuous service at Kyoto University. On the next day an Emeritus Professor was conferred upon him by the university. For two years
until his retirement he served as the ninth Director of the Institute for Chemical
Research, Kyoto University.
Dr. Nakai was born December 4, 1898 in Osaka, where he received the primary
and middle school education. Through the Third Higher School, he entered Kyoto
Imperial University in 1919 and graduated in chemistry from the university in
March, 1922. In May of the same year he started taking the postgraduate course at the Department of Chemistry, Kyoto Imperial University. A year later he left
for Europe to study organic chemistry. There he worked from 1924 to 1925 under
Professor Kremer at the Physiologische Abteilung, Tierarztliche Hochschule in
Berlin. On his return to Japan in January, 1926 he obtained his first academic
post, as an Instructor of the Faculty of Science, Kyoto Imperial University. In 1932, he gained his D. Sc. degree from the above university for a thesis on the
thermal decomposition of cresols. In 1936, he was transferred to the Institute for
Chemical Research in the same university. In 1939, he was appointed Assistant
Professor and promoted to Professor two years later at the same institute. In
October 1959 he was elected Director of the Institute for Chemical Research, Kyoto
University.
His research field has covered chemistry of camphor, polysaccharide, tar, petro-leum and radioisotope. Especially he worked on organic arsenic and antimony
compounds very extensively. He devoted more than thirty years to research work
and accomplished outstanding achievements in organic chemistry.
Dr. Nakai is a man of high character. He has treated us with courtesy and
good humour. By his faithfulness and cheerfulness Dr. Nakai has earned the respect of every one of us.
We wish for his continued health and happiness for many years to come.
