Tocreateanornamentoftheboxyouhavestartwithwhatsizedoestheboxneedtobetofitonablockofwoodthatis1¾x1¾x4inchlong.Withthatinyourmindyougotosetupyoursawtocuttheperfectdiamondsfromtheselectedwoodyouchose.Youtestyourfitbycutting3diamondsandiftheyfittogetherexactlytightyoucanstartcuttingyourmultidiamondstomaketheboxes.Thenalsocutadjoiningpiecestomakearectangle,thenaddsidepiecestoformasegmentthatwillfitonthebaseblockthatis1¾x1¾x4inches.

Threedifferenttrianglestestedtofitexactly;allthecornersfittightly,atthispointyoucanmasscutyourdiamondsformakingtheboxes.

Youattachtheseboxsegmentstotheblocks,afterslicingtheminhalfandaddingapieceofveneertothebottomofthesegmentwhichbecomesapictureframeafterturningtoaglobe..

ToholdtheboxdesignsevenlyandsquareIusedacoupleof1/8inchdowelpinstoholdtheboxsignsinplace,whenapplyinggluetofoursides.Thingsgetalittleslipperyandhardtoapplyclamps,thedowelpinskeepeverythinginlineandcentered.

Chuckuptheblankandturnitround,thenattherightendwecutaplugthatis13/8inchindiameter,Imademyselfacutoutthatis13/8”,thiswaseasiertomeasuringthanwithcalibers.

Sincethisisaplugwehavea5degreetappertotheplug,Idrewapatternincardboardtotestthe5degreetapper.Thecardboardwasn’tgoingtoholdupinusesoImadeaaluminumpatternofa5degreetapper.

Beforeyoucutofftheplugsectionmarktheplugandtheglobeasshown,thiswillhelpyou

lineupthepluganditsgraindesignwhenyouinserttheplugbackintotheglobesbody.

IhollowouttheglobebycheatingabitIdrillout90%ofthewoodinsteadofusingahollowingtoolandgoingintoasmallhole.Youcangetintotheglobealoteasierthiswhytohollow.Thensizetheopeningtomatchtheplugwithits5%tapperusingaaluminumpatterntoinsertintothehole.Thelipthatisleftontheglobeistheretoindicatethesizeoftheplug,thatwascutfreeandnottogowiderthanthelip.

Makeyourselfasquarescraperasshowandgrindoffthefrontbottomofthescrapertokeepitfromdigginginandgrindoffthesidetokeepfromcuttingthesidesoftheholelargerthanneeded.Thepurposeofthescraperistoaidincuttinga5degreetapertomatchtheplug.

Hollowtheglobeandcuta5degreetaperontheopeningtomatchtheplug.

Thisishowmuchhollowingcanbedoneinahurry.Andyoucanseehowmuchmoretohollow.Byusingaspecialsquarescraperasshownyoucancutandsizetheplugholewithoutenlargingthewidthoftheplughole.Juststaywithinthelipthatwasleftasaguide.

Withthealuminumpatternusetheoppositeendtofitinsidetotestthe5degreetapper.

Testthefitofthepluganddrawalinearoundtoseethedepthoftheplugthatwasinserted.

Onceyoucutthematchingtapperoftheplug,youcanusethicksupergluetoglueintheplug.Hereyouseetheindicatorlinethatwasusedtoaligntheplugtothegrainofthebasewood.

Beforeyouturntheendoftheglobeandtheplug,drilla¼inchholeallthewaythroughtheglobe.Ifoundthatafteryoushapedtheglobesandedandappliedthefinish,wheretheglobeattachedtothechuckandwhereyoucuttheglobeoff.Theglobeusuallyhadalipleftontheendandthefinishneededtobeimproved.

Aftersandingandapplyingafinishtotheglobe,youcutofffromthemainblock.Ifoundthatitleftalipandthefinishwasn’twhatIwanted.SoIcameupwithagigusinganearlierglobeblockandinsertinga¼”dowelgavemewhatIneededtoslidetheglobeontoremovethelipandapplythefinish.

Thegigwitha¼inchdowelsoastobeabletosliptheglobeonandfinishbyremovingthelipandapply

Thisgigwasmadefromanearlierglobeblockaddeda¼inchdoweljustshortoftheglobesbodylength.Iftheglobeisabitlooseinsertapiecepapertoweltothe¼inchdowel.
