Problem solving‘Today’s pupils solving tomorrow’s problems’

What is problem solving?

To us, problem solving is:

• Seeking relevant information to gain an understanding.• Searching for opinions, predictions and conflicting facts.• Simplifying the facts into a solution that takes into account

all relevant stakeholders.

“Good teachers focus on developing a way of thinking and reasoning that emphasises problem-solving and teaching strategies

relating to the content that they wish students to learn”

In John Hattie’s ‘Visible Learning for Teachers’ he signposts what good teachers should do.

?

Students who study Geography are encouraged to consider solutions, and formulate their own points of view.

Videos, showing interviews with only one side or another.

Chances for group debates, where students have an opportunity to vote using their instinct.

Coursework and common assessments are designed to test students on their ability to justify the decisions they have made.

We believe that students who study Geography leave with the skills to identify problems, and understand

what is required to help them resolve them too!
