Oscar

2011‟s Top Terrier follows in the

footsteps of his illustrious sire, Angus,

who won the Terrier Group 3 times

and was Top Dog All Breeds in 2005.

However where Angus is a real

gentleman, Oscar is an extremely

busy boy and always insists on being

with you, according to his owner Pat

de Coning.

Oscar loves to play, and while he

demolishes all his toys in a day or

two, he is incredibly gentle with Pat‟s

grandchildren and the Chinese

Crested, Mr Wong , even though he‟s

not really sure what Mr Wong is.

Of course, his demanding personality makes him a super showman, he is

always eager to please and you can almost hear him saying “Pick me, pick

me”, says Pat. He is Pat‟s first home-bred champion and this is his 3rd year

in the Top 100.

She is deeply grateful to Dani Pera who grooms him to perfection as well as

Tyrone Goode, Graeme Graham & Audrey Hauptfleish who have handled

him over the years.

Sugar

2011‟s Top Toy, Sugar, was the obvious choice from a litter of three for

breeder Ricky Gouws. She could not resist his exquisite face with pitch black

eyes & pigmentation, gorgeous silky coat and flowing movement.

As a baby, Sugar‟s bold

personality meant he was

always the first to escape and

explore, as an adult, that energy

has translated to him always

giving his best.

Ricky says that for Sugar, show-

time is play time which makes

dog shows particularly

pleasurable. A real clown, he

loves entertaining the crowds

around the ring and will not give

up hunting for his favourite ball,

no matter how prestigious the

occasion.

In 2010, three year

old Sugar placed

70th in the ratings.

2011 saw him

climbing to the top of

the Toy Group

thanks to an exciting

show season which

included winning an

All-breed Best in

Show and a

Reserve BIS, along

with several Toy

Group 1sts and

multiple placings.

Diane Holman’s

Flat Coated Retriever

Odin

At the end of 2008 Swedish

Flat-coat breeder, Lena

Hagglund offered Di Holman

pick of the bitches from a

repeat mating of a very

successful litter. As is so

often the way, best laid plans

went astray and that bitch

did not take.

However Lena had done

another mating which she

hoped would also produce a

lovely bitch, but, when Di

reached the Arctic Circle to

fetch her puppy, Lena

produced a gorgeous male

instead.

She suggested that Di take both a dog and a bitch, but common sense

prevailed and the Holmans decided to take Odin on his own. Odin placed 76th

in 2010 and having enjoyed the Top Dog function immensely, Mike Holman

suggested that Di make a concerted effort to reach the Top 10 in 2011.

He became an avid follower of the

ratings and Odin obliged with two Best

in Show wins over the Bloemfontein

weekend, a Reserve at Zululand KC

and a string of Group wins during the

year taking him to 10th position and

Top Gundog!

Flatties are known as the Peter Pan of

Gundogs and Odin exemplifies the

traits that have given his breed that

label. His energy, exuberance and love

for life are boundless, and according to

Di he leaps about 10 feet in the air if he

reckons it will mean going out for a

walk or some training!

Never shy to take up a challenge, and

with a Beginners Obedience class win

under Odin‟s belt, Di is now looking

forward to demonstrating his dual

purpose ability in the field.

Bruce Jenkins’

Smooth Haired Dachshund

Reuben

Reuben‟s breeder, Bruce Jenkins,

considered him to be pick of a litter

of seven right from the start, even

though he was small. Bruce had

actually planned on keeping a bitch,

but decided that Reuben was not

going anywhere quite early on. Much

to his relief, none of the puppy

buyers gave Reuben a second look

and so Bruce did not even need to

make any explanations as to why he

wouldn‟t let him go.

To cut a long story short, he began

to grow and by 4 months he attended

his first open show and won the

Puppy Group, Group and Reserve

Best Puppy in Show. From then on,

Bruce says, showing him has been a

fantastic experience.

Reuben now boasts 3 All-breed

Best in Show awards, 3 Reserve

BIS awards and 3 Best Puppy in

Show awards. His success

haseven attracted worldwide

attention with Bruce having three

overseas offers to buy him as well

as two orders for frozen semen.

According to Bruce the best thing

about Reuben is his temperament -

totally laid back at home and a real

softy, but he walks into the show-

ring as if he owns it. His favourite

toy is the cardboard inner of a toilet

roll and he takes one to bed with

him every night. Apparently when

there are none available he gets

quite upset!

Me Fagin

Martin & Leigh

Beckmann’s

Great Dane Fagin

Fagin, also known as

Mannetjie to his friends,

announced his arrival at

birth, say his breeders Martin

and Leigh Beckmann, wailing

so heartily as he exited his

birth sac, that even the vet

commented about him not

needing any reviving.

As with his kennel mate,

Findlay, who placed 10th in

the Top 100 last year, Fagin

was a ”Puppy Puzzle”

choice. At just two years old

Fagin‟s show career has

gone from strength to

strength, once again proving

the value of this method of

assessment.

Fagin has multiple Best Puppy and

Junior in Show wins, but the highlight

of 2011 for the Beckmanns, was

back to back Best in Show wins at

EDKC and the SA Great Dane

Association in April, the latter under a

well Known Great Dane specialist

from England.

At home, Fagin‟s clown-like antics

make him a pleasure to live with.

According to the Beckmanns he is

the most laid back, happy-go-lucky

chap you are likely to meet. Carrying

toys around, impressing everyone

with his “catch of the day” is his

favourite pastime and if there‟s no

toy readily available, the very patient

and obliging cat will do!

Vanessa Nicolau’s

Chow Chow Kendo

Incredibly, Vanessa Nicolau‟s

home-bred Chow is

appearing in the Top 10 for

the fourth time, and in the Top

100 for the sixth time! Kendo

first appeared in 66th position

in 2006. He climbed to 30th in

2007 and then was 7th in

2008 and 2009. In 2010 he

dropped two places to 9th,

and now he‟s back in the 7th

spot.

A remarkable achievement for

Kendo who is now the most

awarded Chow Chow in

South African breed history.

His impressive show record includes 9 All-breed Best in Show awards, 4 Group

BIS awards and a specialty BIS. Kendo also won the Supreme Champion in

2009, and has placed in the top 3 of Dog of the Year no less than 3 times.

Even as a puppy, Vanessa

says there was no mistaking

Kendo‟s special qualities

although she never imagined

just how successful he would

be. Lovable and playful, Kendo

is always a gentleman. He

loves showing off and when he

likes a judge, rewards them

with his hallmark Tai Chi bow.

Kendo‟s carefree attitude and

the way he lives life to the full

are most important to Vanessa

and she considers having his

qualities recognised in the

show ring to be the cherry on

top.

Denise Edmondson’s

Samoyed Zac

As a baby, Zac was not

breeder Denise

Edmondson‟s first choice, but

it wasn‟t long before his “pick

me” attitude and curious

nature won her over. Denise

says he was always an

exceptionally well behaved

puppy and has grown up to

be a real goody-two-shoes,

immediately letting Denise

know when his housemates

are up to mischief. Zac is

also a wonderful

conversationalist – Denise

says he is so responsive to

her chats with him, she could

swear he understands what

she‟s talking about!!

Not yet 3 years old, Zac boasts a truly

international pedigree. His dam was bred

in New Zealand, went to Australia and

was then exported to South Africa. Her

sire, in turn was a French-bred, Danish

owned dog, campaigned in several

European countries to international

champion status and then exported to

Australia. Zac‟s sire was bred in Canada

and sired by a Danish dog.

Always a responsive dog and so willing to

please, Zac proved the worth of this mix

with an amazing puppy career that saw

him win no less than 10 Best Puppy in

Show awards and finishing 2010 in 18th

position in the Ratings!

In 2011 he added two Best in Show awards and 4 Reserves to his tally along

with both the Animaltalk and KUSA Herding Dog titles for 2011.

As far as his show name goes, Denise is eternally grateful to Fran Browning

who thought of it and apparently couldn‟t wait to get to Samoyeds while judging,

so that she could tell Denise about her great idea !

Gaia

Rossana Joubert &

Le-Anza von Broemson’s

Siberian Husky

Bred by Rossana Joubert,

Gaia is from Spanish

imports bred from American

lines, and according to

Rossana, she was pick of

the litter right from the start

– the biggest, fattest puppy,

the most outgoing and with

an obviously beautiful head.

Gaia still loves her food and

is a real flirt. She gets on

well with everyone and her

easy going nature means

she is equally happy

staying with Rossana or

fitting in with co-owner Le-

Anza‟s pack of Siberians.

Not yet 3, Gaia has a fabulous

show record. She has won Junior

Dog of the Year 2010, KUSA

National Working Dog and

Reserve KUSA National Dog

2011, Reserve Supreme

Champion 2011, along with

multiple Group 1sts and Bests in

Show.

Rossana says credit must go to

Le-Anza for her care and love, the

wonderful job she has done

campaining Gaia and particularly

for believing in Gaia,.

Donné Lucas &

Dieter Rencken’s

Dobermann

Charli

A true ambassador for her breed,

Donné, Lucas‟s remarkable

Dobermann has turned heads both

locally and abroad. Not yet 4 years

old, Charli‟s impressive list of

achievements includes winning Top

Working and Top Bitch along with 5th

overall in the 2010 Rankings. 2011

saw her winning Top Working again

and climbing one notch overall to 4th

place.

On the international front, Charlie and

Donné have continued their globe-

trotting and Charli now boasts

Championship titles in Luxembourg

and The Netherlands, along with South

Africa. She also has points towards

her titles in both Poland and France.

During their travels, Charli takes

everything in her stride, from

escalators, taxis, underground trains

and boats, to pub-crawls and Oompah

bands.

According to Donné. Charli has 3 favourite things in life; running at the track,

tennis balls and her beauty sleep. As the only bitch in her litter, Charli offered

Donné no options, so even though she was brown, she stayed.

Donné says Charli has proven to be one of those melting moments. She

describes her temperament as outstanding and says she is fearless, loveable,

gorgeous, clever, willing, able and can be “switched” on or off immediately. For

Donne & Dieter, Charlie is their absolute ultimate dog.

Jane Kiefer &

Tracey McQuarrie’s

Standard Poodle Kiera

Proving that Success Breeds

Success, Kiera was pick of a

litter bred from Usher, the

2007 Animaltalk Top Dog and

Thandi, the first ever

Animaltalk SA Bred

Invitational winner. The litter

was named after the

characters in Pirates of the

Caribbean and her call name

came from Kiera Knightly who

played Elizabeth Swan in the

movie.

According to Jane, Kiera

has certainly lived up to

her registered name. She

is one part beautiful

damsel and two parts

swashbuckling pirate, able

to hold her own among

the boys! As a show dog,

it is not beneath her to

embarrass Jane by pulling

out of her hand and

continuing round the ring

alone, or charging into the

ring ahead of Jane,

leaving her to catch up.

All her antics and prima-donna

moments have made showing

her all the more fun and her

success even more rewarding

for Jane. In 2011, that success

included multiple group wins, a

Best in Show and two

Reserves, giving her two titles –

not only Top Bitch, but also Top

SA Bred!

At home, Kiera is Jane‟s

constant shadow and sleeps on

the pillows next to her. She

loves jogging with Jane‟s son

Markus and almost permanently

has a ball in her mouth, never

tiring of forcing it into

someone‟s lap in the hope that

it will get thrown for her.

Romeo

In second place, Quadey,

the phenomenally

successful Afghan who is

also no stranger to the top

10 rankings. 2008‟s

winner of the Animaltalk

Top 100 contest with the

highest ever total points,

he was also 4th in 2007

and 2nd in 2009 making

this his 4th appearance.

Quadey started 2010 with

a bang, winning the Supa

7’s Spectacular, followed

When Chris and Erna Aucamp visited the

States in February 2009, they enjoyed an

evening at the theatre seeing Mamma

Mia. They were in a party of about 10

people that included Wendy Anderson

and Richard Paquette, and little did they

know that while they were watching the

show, a future star would be born.

Romeo‟s litter was whelped that very

same evening.

Two months later Wendy accompanied

Richard on his judging trip to South Africa

and while here, asked the Aucamps if

they would like to have a Winterholmes

Shih Tzu – it would be the first to come to

South Africa. Erna was excited about the

idea so Wendy selected a puppy for her,

naming him Love Story since her and

Richard had decided to get engaged

during their trip to SA.

In June 2010, the

Aucamps saw Romeo in

the flesh for the first time

at the World Show in

Denmark and watched

him win the World Junior

Winner Shih Tzu title.

Later that year he made

his South African debut at

Sasolburg KC winning

CC, BOB & Group 4t, a

taste of things to come.

Romeo has never looked

back and despite having

such a short time in the

ring, he ended 2010 at

29th in the ratings.

In 2011 Romeo‟s career kicked into high gear when he took Best in Show at

Uitenhage KC, the first of many wins that included several All-breed Bests in

Show, the Supreme Champion contest, KUSA Showdog of the Year, plus overall

Runner-up and Top Utility in the Top 100 Ratings.

According to Erna,

Romeo‟s name says it

all… A big ear kisser, he

loves to please and his

love and loyalty to the

family are totally

unconditional. He enjoys

travelling to shows,

especially when Chris

allows him to hang out

on the bed and feeds him

all of the next day‟s

biltong. Romeo is also

excelling as a sire with

puppies from two litters

already doing well in the

ring.

He is, says Erna, a dog

in a million and she and

Chris are incredibly

proud of him.

Clair van den Bergh’s

Afghan Hound Rogue

The second Afghan to win the

Animaltalk Top 100 contest, 4-

year-old Rogue was bred in

Australia by Peter & Ros Bacich,

from a grandfather to

granddaughter mating that had

been planned for several years.

Clair booked a puppy when she

fell in love with his half-brother

while judging in Australia. She

also met his sire and dam and

their lines tied in with her existing

dogs as well as introducing new

blood that she needed.

In 2010 Clair tested the waters with Rogue, attending just a handful of local shows,

and he ended the year as number 61 in the Top 100. 2011 saw him begin the year in

fine style, winning 3 groups and a Best in Show on one weekend, all under overseas

judges.

He maintained those winning ways throughout the year amassing no fewer than 8 All-

breed Bests in Show, including back-to-back wins at the Highway & Natal Coast

weekend in May. Not only did he head up the rankings for most of the year, he also

proved his worth as a sire with three of his progeny winning Reserve Best of Breed to

him during the year.

A true showman, Rogue loves to strut

his stuff and is known for his antics in

the Best in Show ring. He psyches

himself up so that by the time he gets

to BIS, he is bursting with excitement

and will often nip Clair‟s behind or

jump in the air. Clair says he is also

very vocal in the ring, explaining his

superiority quite clearly to the other

dogs around him! As befits royalty,

Rogue travels in the front seat of the

car while Clair‟s mom & daughter are

relegated to the back.

Clair says that living with Rogue is a dream come true. Not only does he show with

all his heart to please her, he constantly watches over and protects her. 100%

Afghan in every way, Rogue is arrogant and possesses that sought-after „style of

high order‟ but still loves to cuddle. He will allow Clair to smother him in kisses, but

preferably not in public!

Clair feels privileged to share such a special bond with Rogue and says he is truly a

once-in-a-lifetime dog.
