Gluten Free
Introduction/Overview
The topic that interests me is the idea of being gluten free. There has always been people
with celiac disease where they have to be gluten free, but now many people are just choosing to
be gluten free as a diet. Gluten is the protein found in wheat, and there are so many things that
have gluten in it that you don’t think about, like soy sauce and beer. My project will be
comparing the pros and cons of being gluten free.
While some people think going gluten free will make you loose weight, which is not the
case. Of course if you ate lots of bread, and then just stopped you would loose weight, but the
Huffington post says that if you just replace bread and pasta with gluten free breads and pastas
then you are likely to ingest more fat and sugars. So far I haven’t done much research on the
topic because I just chose it, but there are many articles out there including the one from the
Huffington Post and the on gluten.net.
This topic is complex because there are lots of people who think gluten free is the way to
go, even if you don’t have celiac disease or are not sensitive to gluten, and there are also lots of
people who think the opposite.
Initial Inquiry Question(s)
Is a gluten free diet really better for you if you do not have celiac disease?

My Interest in this Topic
I am interested in this topic because my mom and sister are both gluten free. They try to
convert the whole family to be gluten free because they believe it is was better for your health. I
would like to be able to know the real truth about going gluten free. I do not know too much
about this topic, but I heard that if you don’t have celiac disease then it is actually worse, but I
have also heard it is better for you either way. I hope to learn all the affects of going gluten free
to know if it is a healthy life choice.
Next Steps
My next steps will be visiting the library and reading medical research studies. Also I will
read all about what the Gluten Intolerance Group has to say, and see what other articles online
have to say about it. I also might try to find people that are actually gluten free, by choice and
because they are intolerant, and see what they have to say about it.
