Weighing your tortoise at two-week intervals, and periodically measuring its Straight Carapace Length (*SCL),

will enable you to keep accurate records and see at a glance whether your tortoise is developing well. Instructions on how to weigh and measure a tortoise correctly can be

found on the TTT website.

Check regularly to ensure the eyes are bright, the nares (nose) is dry, that the shell is in good condition, the tail area

is clean, and that the faeces is of a good, firm consistency, and note these facts in the Observation column.

Also check the urates - the white waste material that is excreted with the urine. Urates that are watery or soft like toothpaste indicate good

hydration.Gritty, sandy or hard urates signal dehydration.

Take this Observation Records booklet with you on visits

to your specialist reptile vet, so that the answers to questions they might ask are readily available.

* SCL = Length of the underside of tortoise from front to back.

These records will enable you to adjust the amount of food you give your tortoise, depending on whether he is gaining

too much or not enough weight.

Keeping detailed records and making close observations

enables you to build up a pattern of development for individual tortoises.

This pattern can be monitored to alert you if your

tortoise's behaviour or condition changes, thereby pointing out an underlying health issue that might be developing, and enabling you to act sooner rather than later.

Tortoises should be tested for worms once a year, and the results can be recorded on the Worming Records page.

Repeated testing will be required to ensure treatment if required has been successful.

The Note pages at the end of the booklet are a good place to record vet visits, medication instructions, treatment

plans, and other important items.
