There’s no doubt that PS4 is the technically superior system, but how superior is it?

On the surface, both machines look very similar. That’s because they’re both using AMD designed APUs (that’s a CPU and GPU on one chip).

TheThe CPU (central processing unit) on both systems is identical but the Xbox One’s is running at a slightly higher clock speed, meaning it’s generally faster. While this won’t benefit games much, this makes game switching, snapping Skype to the side and all the other cool multimedia stuff possible without grinding the machine to a crawl.

TheThe GPU (graphics processing unit) is unquestionably better on PS4. While they are both based on the same technology, the one in the PS4 is actually bigger than that of the Xbox One, meaning it literally has more silicon inside, and can do more tasks and perform better. In fact, it has a whole 18 compute units – compared to the Xbox One’s 12 – whichwhich is where the 50% power advantage comes from.

While both machines come with 8gb of RAM, PS4’s is a much faster GDDR5 type, compared to the considerably slower DDR3 on the Xbox One, which once again contributes to PS4’s performance advantage.

Both systems come with internal 500gb hard drives, but with mandatory game installs being upwards of 50gb a pop, that space can and will run out quickly. On PS4, Sony have made the internal hard drive easily-accessible, allowing you to remove and replace it with any 2.5” SATA drive without voiding your warranty; so if you run out of space you know youyou can easily change it. On the down side, PS4 won’t support external USB drives.

Xbox One is the exact opposite. The 500gb internal hard drive is buried deep inside the box, meaning you’ll need to void your warranty to switch it out and, if you do, Microsoft won’t touch your console with a barge pole if it breaks. However, they have promised a future update to allow you to plug in any USB hard drive and expand your storage.
