Terms + Definitions

Traveller

Any person who moves from point A to point B on either permanent or temporary basis.

Tourist:

A visitor who travels to a country other than that in which they have usual residence for at least one night but not more than one year, and whose main purpose of visit is other than the exercise of an activity remunerated from within the country visited.

Generating market:

A country or region from which a tourist travels (their place of residence)

Host destination:

The place the tourist travels to

Inbound or Outbound Travel?

Inbound travel - travel into a country

Outbound travel – travel out of a country

Tourism Services:

The services and products to meet tourist needs eg: Travel agents Transport to and from the destination Transport within the destination Accommodation at the destination Sightseeing, attractions, activities Entertainment Food and beverage Shopping Financial services (banks, exchange bureaux)

Tourism as a System

Systems theory considers any system to be composed of interdependent and interrelated sub-components or parts, and that the system (the whole) is greater than the simple sum of the parts.

Three elements to the system: a geographic element a human element a business element

The catalyst to the creation of this system is the tourist.

The geographic element:

The host country or region The transit route that the tourist

takes between host and generating region.

The human element:

The residents of the generating region who have become tourists

The residents of the host region

The business element

The tourism industry:
