H.E. Hon. Patrick Eyogo EdzangHost, Minister for Water and Energy, Gabon
Toward Achieving Water Security and Safely Managed Sanitation for Africath
On behalf of the Government of Gabon, I warmly and proudly welcome you to amazing Gabon and the scenic and vibrant Libreville. Welcome to the
th th7 Africa Water Week and 11 AMCOW General Assembly hosted by the Government and good people of Gabon. The Republic of Gabon deems the hosting of the epoch making and biggest water and sanitation event in Africa very important and significant.
It is my pleasure therefore to welcome colleague Ministers from the continent, our development partners, civil society, especially the youth and women, the knowledge and sc ient i f ic community, media and other distinguished
participants. You have arrived at the vibrant, muscular heart of Gabon, the largest city and home to over a third of Gabon's population.
thIt is gratifying to note that the theme of the 7 Africa Water Week is“Toward Achieving Water Security and Safely Managed Sanitation for Africa”. Accomplishing water security is imperative to safeguard sustainable access to adequate quantities of acceptable quality water to maintaining livelihoods, human well-being, and socio-economic development. It also helps us to ensure protection against water-borne pollution and water-related disasters, and for preserving ecosystems in a climate of peace and political stability. Equally important is the need to provideour teeming populations with safely managed sanitation services.
As we go through the week, let us take stock of our far we have gone in the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goal 6 and the critical actions that we should take if we are not to be left behind by the rest of the world come the 2030target date of reckoning. I charge you to bring innovation to the fore as you deliberate at the technical sessions and other seminars. Let us strive to bring pragmatic solutions that we can learn from and apply to our local situations; and also to setSMART targets and performance indicators to keep us accountable to the political commitments that we make. I definitely look forward to the outcomes of this conference.
Once again, welcome to Libreville and I use this medium to assure you that driven by its duties and obligations, the Government of Gabon will take all necessary measures to ensure the safety and well-being of all participants during your stay in our country.
Welcome! Bienvenue!! Karibu!!! Bem-vindo!!! „fl»«»Õ—„

Toward Achieving Water Security and Safely Managed Sanitation for Africath
thIt is my great pleasure to welcome you to the 7 Africa Water
thWeek and the 11 AMCOW General Assembly. I am glad that this event is taking place in the beautiful capital city of Gabon, Libreville, the gleaming coastline city.
On behalf of the Executive Committee and the Council of Ministers of the African Ministers Council of Water (AMCOW), I express our sincere gratitude to my counterpart Minister for Water Resources and Energy, Gabon, H.E. Hon. Patrick EyogoEdzang, and indeed the government of the Republic of Gabon for graciously agreeing to host this
th th7 edition of Africa Water Week and the 11 AMCOW General Assembly.
thThe theme of the 7 Africa Water Week is “Toward Achieving Water Security and Safely Managed Sanitation for Africa”.The choice of the theme is an amplification of the current perspective of AMCOW in its recently approved strategy 2018-2030 concerning what needs to be done to
improve water security and safely managed sanitation in the continent. We believe that the level of reliable quantity and quality of water in the continent is too low, and the level of water-related risk is too high, and both are unacceptable. AMCOW's new strategy therefore calls that such water insecurity must be addressed through a holistic and action-oriented framework that is able to support the Africa's Member States water entities, populations, the private sector, and the environment. AMCOW posits that sustainable development in Africa will not be achieved without greatly improved water security, and that significant investment must be made in Africa's water management institutions, its infrastructure, and its ability to make trade-offs where needed, compromises where possible, and synergies that show how to achieve “win-win” situations between water, agriculture, and energy.
This theme could not have come at a more auspicious time than now as we make inroads in to the SDG period to take stock of our performance thus far. It is heart-warming that that some of the objectives of the conference are to:· Share lessons of progress and good practices in water security management plans. Share lessons and good practices on enhancing water and sanitation resilience to climate change. Share lessons and good practices for eliminating open defecation from communities.
· Promote the use of an inclusive range of existing and new sanitation technologies, innovative business models, and other creative approaches critical to achieving significant sanitation progress in member countries; and
· Contribute to developing strategies on raising adequate and sustainable financing of water and sanitation agendas.
thThe 7 Africa Water Week is therefore a call to action and positions us to creatively think and act and win. I welcome you all, colleague Ministers, Parliamentarians, Councillors, civil society, private sector, donors, international development partners, youths and women to Libreville, Gabon. Let's go and make it happen.
