Differeny state & territorial govs handling situation differently because general government failed to provide a uniform law to implement the reservation of school lands. Bill received by house from Senate, proceeded in committee of the Whole and didn’t get any further.

Refers to township officers in the bill. Made it to law?

Reserved section 16s should have been proved up with patents to the bodies politic of township inhabitants. Persons with literacy in the law did not represent township inhabitants adequately. Most people were not

literate in the law and couldn’t protect their rights and powers.

Bill passed HR but not S

1836-06-01 Read 1st & 2nd time, “committed to the Committee of whole house tomorrow” and then no further entries in the index. Congress was working on a uniform bill for exchanging section 16s and may have put this bill aside since the uniform bill would cover it. At the end of the month another bill regarding section 1 in Madison county, different township, changes the language to include “vest in inhabitants.” This bill also did not get past the initial stages. Different language for what may have been donation land.
