DESCRIPTION

A presentation for my English 1 class on the topic of Human Trafficking and it's solution.

TRANSCRIPT

Hi, my name is Maya and when I was 11

years old I was sold to a trafficker by my

father so he could feed his other children

He was told I would go to work in a

factory. Instead this man took me to

Mumbai and told me I had to make

sex with men.

When I refused his men raped me and

did not feed me until I agreed. I made sex with

twenty men a day.

Once I tried to escape, but the police found me

and returned me to this man. He put chili paste on a broomstick and

pushed it up inside me and then broke

my ribs with his fist.

Now I live in a cage.

Sex Trafficking

According to US Govt. estimates, 2.5 million people are being trafficked around the world at any given time.

Most are tricked by offers of jobs abroad

Others are sold by fathers or husbands.

Globalization and westernization of the world has created extreme poverty and the resources necessary

to find viable slaves, and trafficking is ever on the rise.

But Why?

Because the business of trafficking for sexual exploitation is highly profitable with little overhead.

The UN in conjunction with the US have created systems to fight Sex

Trafficking, however they have many obstacles.

Corrupt PolicePolice are paid off with Bribes to look the other way at boarder crossings, Brothels and on the street.

Poor Judicial SystemIn some countries the Penalty for trafficking is only 6 months in Jail and a $40 fine

Little ResearchTrying to interview girls in the sex trade puts them at risk, making it unethicalGirls that have been rescued often do not wish to speak out, or are not honest.

No FundingGovernments spend up to 100 times more on fighting drug trafficking than human trafficking.

Experts agree that the problem of Trafficking should be solved by looking at the problem Economically, attacking either it’s chain of supply or its high demand.

How do we attack Human Trafficking economically?

Supply Demand

Until we create world peace or

solve the issue of Global Poverty

we will never be able to attack the

Supply

So we must fight demand!

ElasticityThe Demand of Human Trafficking is highly elastic. Which means as the price goes up, the demand goes down

. In this case, price can also include the price of getting caught!

In 1999 Sweden passed legislation that criminalized a

person who obtains sexual

relation in exchange for

money with both heavy fines and imprisonment.

This New Law

Criminalizes the Purchase Victimizes the Women

Instead of criminalizing the women, it helps

get them into women’s

shelters and off the streets or out of the brothels.

Since 1999 they have seen a decrease in prostitution and more importantly, humans being trafficked into Sweden

These clear and concrete results prove that the only way to eliminate

trafficking is to remove the demand by making

the penalties for exploiting an individual for sex so high that they are not worth the risk. Therefore eliminating a need for sex slaves and

human trafficking!
