Needs AssessmentSource Trust believes each
partner and their supply chain
is unique. We take time to
understand our partners’
priorities against the needs
of the farmers and their
communities, in order to
develop programme
objectives.
Programme management
Source Trust provides its partners with a complete
service for developing and realising their visions
of sustainability and responsibility.
Programme Coordination Source Trust coordinates the
implementation of each
programme – from inception
to completion, acting as
the main contact between
our partners.
Programme DesignWe draw from our experience
and the expertise of local
implementation partners to
design programmes which
focus on transforming farmer
livelihoods, through agreed
outputs and outcomes.
Traceability tools are fundamental
to our programme design.
Reporting & Transparency To enhance transparency and
trust, Source Trust provides
partners with tailored narrative
and financial reports to show
expenditure against agreed
programme components and
progress towards impact.
Marketing Material Source Trust promotes our
partners commitments and
achievements through the
Source Trust website and other
appropriate marketing materials.
We provide case studies and
content to complement our
partners’ own marketing.
Impact Assessment Source Trust assesses the
impact of programmes based
on whether actual outputs are
moving towards intended
outcomes. External parties can
be sponsored to carry out
such assessments.
How we do it
Premium SegregationSource Trust segregates farmer
premiums to provide our
partners with financial security.
Financial reports are to
enhance transparency.
Grant Expertise & Leverage To increase the overall scale
and impact of our partners’
programmes, Source Trust
engages with external
organisations to secure
additional funding, often
only available to not-for-
profit entities.
Internal AuditingSource Trust conducts
regular internal audits of its
sustainability programmes
to ensure all activities are
occurring in line with the
commitments made to its
partners and the principles
of Source Trust.
Financial Management & Leverage
Source Trust prides itself on providing partners with
enhanced financial transparency.
How we do it We value Source Trust’s ability to work closely with cocoa
farmers to improve their agricultural skills so they will

How we do it
Farmer focussed initiatives
Training
• Good Practices – Training farmers in Good
Agricultural, Environmental and Business Practices
supports farmers in achieving a more stable and
sustainable production of cocoa beans.
• Demonstrationsites–We adopt sites to host
trainings, demonstrate Good Practices and trial new
innovations – farmers are more likely to adopt Good
Practices after seeing the effects for themselves.
• Farmerdevelopmentplans–Simple farm business
plans, based on GPS generated farm mapping, can
help farmers to address specific challenges or needs.
• Cooperativecapacitybuilding–Assisting organised
farmer groups through democratic capacity building,
as well as managerial and financial strengthening.
Access to equipment
• Farm shop – Providing direct access to farming
equipment is essential to helping farmers
implement Good Agricultural Practices.
• Protectiveequipment–Specialist equipment is made
available for farmers to borrow when needed.
• Seedlingnurseries–Providing farmers with access
to more disease-resistant and high-yielding hybrid
varieties of cocoa trees.
• Inputsoncredit–Allowing farmers to access
equipment and fertilizers when most needed.
Access to financial services
• Financialliteracy–Empowering farmers and farmer
groups to improve their financial management skills
by encouraging saving, budgeting or using
credit wisely.
• Ruralfinancialservices&products–Giving farmers
access to basic services such as saving accounts
and credit facilities.
• FarmerBusinessSchool–Teaching farmers
to manage their farms as a business based on
an understanding of the economics of
cocoa production.
What we deliver
Source Trust believes that productivity and
increasing yields are the building blocks to
transforming farmer livelihoods; but we also
look beyond this – our programmes are
made up of various components designed
to address the needs of the farmers and
their communities.
Community focussed initiatives
Protecting children
• Awareness raising - To mitigate the risk of the Worst
Forms of Child Labour (WFCL), we encourage awareness
raising amongst all cocoa farming communities.
• Monitoring&remediation–We encourage monitoring
systems via community-level committees to identify the
incidence or risk of child labour. Identified cases are
then supported by remediation systems embedded in
the community which also encourage children to
attend school.
Empowering women
• Gender sensitisation training – Approaching cultural
norms with caution, we encourage communities to
recognise and promote equal rights within farming
and the wider community.
• Equalaccess–Ensuring women have fair access
to inputs, credit schemes, training and other
farmer initiatives.
• Foodcropsupport–Empowering women to diversify
farm income and increase food security by providing
food crop seeds and training.
Promoting health & safety
• Sanitation,hygiene&sexualhealthtraining–
Integrated into farmer training or through workshops,
basic health training can improve the well-being of
the wider community.
• Foodsecurity&nutritionworkshops–Improving the
welfare of farmers and their communities by
reducing malnutrition.
• Occupationalsafetytraining–Providing farmers
with the knowledge and skills to reduce the risks
associated with rural cocoa farming.
Supporting communities
• Infrastructureneedsassessment–Communities are
given the opportunity to reveal their greatest needs
and contribute to the decision-making process.
• Accesstowater–Provision of basic water
infrastructure is vital to farmers and communities,
especially those growing cocoa and food
crop seedlings.
Source Trust trials and
integrates the latest
innovative components
into our programmes in
order to improve their
scale and efficiency.
Looking to the future Innovative solutions
• Farmersatisfactionsurvey–Gaining a better
understanding for why young people may want to
move away from cocoa farming and a rural lifestyle,
by identifying the potential needs for additional
support to farmers and their communities.
• Micro–irrigation–Exploring innovative solutions
including solar and kinetic power pumps to help
farmers reach maximum productivity potential.
• Environmentalstewardship–Promoting and
rewarding farmer conservation and preservation
of fragile or protected ecosystems.
• Solarsolutions–Providing sustainable renewable
energy solutions for rural communities and farmers.
• Inspiringyoungfarmers–A practical solution to
inspire young people from farming communities
to be entrepreneurial.
