It's a tall order but I urge you to hold me to it."

THERE IS A DIFFERENCE

Traffic engineering is a branch of civil engineering

that uses engineering techniques to achieve the

safe and efficient movement of people and goods

on roadways. It focuses mainly on research for safe

and efficient traffic flow, such as road geometry,

sidewalks and crosswalks, cycling infrastructure,

traffic signs, road surface markings and traffic

lights. Traffic engineering deals with the functional

part of transportation system, except the

infrastructures provided.

FUNDAMENTAL SKILLS

• What level of assessment?

• What is the Transport Planner (or Traffic Engineer) going on about?

• What information do I need to refer to?

ASSESSMENT LEVELS

• Strategic Plan

• Activity Centre

• Transport Assessment

STRATEGIC TRANSPORT PLANS

• Initiate the plan

• Identify Current and Future State

• Assess Alternatives

• Review, Amend and Improve

• Develop Plan

• Implement and Deliver

• Monitor and Evaluate

TRANSPORT ASSESSMENT GUIDELINES

TRANSPORT ASSESSMENT GUIDELINES

“The WAPC’s State Planning Policy No.1 (SPP1

February 2006) sets out the key principles relating to

environment, community, economy,

infrastructure and regional development,

which should guide the way in which future

planning decisions are made.

The objective of the infrastructure component is to:

“facilitate strategic development by making

provision for efficient and equitable transport

and public utilities”.

Assessment of the transport infrastructure

needed to support proposed land use

development is therefore required for all

levels of land use planning”.
