LEGO TASKBOT ACTIVITY

Traveling on Various Surfaces Over Various Time Periods

Think!

Can You Name Different Types of Surfaces?

Any Effect?

Does the various surfaces that a robot travels on have an effect on its Speed?

Types of Surfaces

Wood Floor Tile Carpet Metal Paper Cardboard Dirt Concrete Tar Grass Any more??????

What is Speed?

Zoooooooooom……..

What is Speed?

Speed is often referred to as the RATE an object or your Taskbot moves.

What is Speed?

Speed is often referred to as the RATE an object or your Taskbot moves.

It is related to DISTANCE and TIME.

What is DISTANCE ?

What is DISTANCE ?

Distance are units of length between two points or places.

Metric lengths include: cm, meters, kilometers.

Customary lengths include: inches, feet, yards, miles.

What is TIME?

What is TIME?

Time is how long did it take to go from one place to the other.

Some time is measured in seconds, minutes, hours, days, months, years.

Any other ??????

How is Distance, Time and Rate Related?

How is Distance, Time and Rate Related?

Distance = Rate multiplied by Time[D=RT].

Soooooooooooooooo Rate or Speed = Distance divided by

Time.

Objectives

Program the Taskbot using the LEGO NXT Software and learn how to change a robot’s speed and time variables.

Make predictions about the distance your Taskbot will travel for given time periods.

Compare a robot’s speed over different surfaces.

Test/measure the distances (your predictions).

Compute and graph the robot’s speed(rate).

Let’s Begin by Creating a Speadsheet

Follow These Steps

Decide what surface you want your robot to travel on. Enter the description in Column 2.

Predict the distance that your robot will travel. Enter it in Column 3.

Fill in the time that you choose in Column 5.

After your robot travels, fill in Column 6 with the distance that you measured.

Compute the rate and complete Column 4.

Let The Fun Begin!

Try many trials with different times. Try many trials with different surfaces.

Let’s Share Our Results!

Groups present their finding and graphs. Any observations, discoveries,

conclusions? NXT program sharing………………

Summary

Sooooooooooooooooo How are Speed (rate), Time, and Distance

related ??????

What would you like to try NXT ??????
