The Hamtramck Public Librarydesign is meant to serve as a center for a diverse community
to interact with one another and facilitate growth. The
building interacts with the public’s path by visually breaking
the plane of the sidewalk in some locations while stepping
away in others. Each cardinal direction is represented by
an extrusion, or shift in the floor plan. The resulting form
establishes the building as a landmark and a compass for
the community’s path.

Grade Retention Needed
T h e V a l l i s P l a y h o u s e solves a number of municipal zoning challenges while achieving a
usable floor plan. A maximum floor area of 75 sf and the finished
floor elevation of six feet above grade is required in order to
qualify as an acceptable “play structure”. In order to maintain a
covered play space a Lanai is incorporated beyond the calculated
floor area, adding character and function to the design. The
existing topography provided enough slope that retention was
possible, which allowed the deck to bridge across the building
easements to the retained hill. This allowed a traffic path through
the lower level and maintain a stair free path to grade.

Water Garden Amphi thea te r is a multi-functional outdoor public facility, with the main
feature of the program being an 18-24 person amphitheater.
The chosen location takes advantages of many natural
features of the river valley, including steep grade changes
along the valley’s edge. The grade decline provides a natural
structure to place the amphitheater within. The walkway
and ramp designs are ADA accessible and incorporate
platforms for gathering areas to allow for classes to utilize
the environment as a source of study.

The Sales Residence Pavi l ion
integrates into the existing traffic patterns of the property to
create a destination between the shoreline and pool area.
The arched passages and masonry piers are proportionately
oversized to capture and frame the waterfront views.
The existing elements of the estate are enhanced by the
landscaped pathways and strategically positioned planters
that define the space of key features in the layout.

Span i sh/Medi te r ranean insp i red elevated 18” above finished grade. Arched passages frame the canal, while the enclosure allows for shelter at the southern most point of the yard.
1 Elevated Paver Walk
Bullnose precast concrete treads extend along the exposed walk faces, creating a proportionate platform base.
3
Precast Balustrade
Along rear edge of the paver deck.Underlining the natural mangrove foliage.
4
Phoenix Sylvestris Planter
8’diameter masonry planter elevated 18” above finished grade. Painted Dash Trowel finish stucco planter face acts as a base for precast plaques arrayed along the planter face. Each planter provides a bed to accommodate a 16’ clear trunk Phoenix Sylvestris palm. The individual planters are aligned and located so that the palm height and vertical frawns anchor the pool and pavilion within the yard.
2
Grass Bocce Ball
Playing field stepped down from elevated pavilion paver deck. By developing the area between the cabana and canal the new bocce ball becomes a destination and activity area within the new traffic patterns.
6
Pavers with Composite Inlay
At the entrance of the pool and defining each pavilion bay. The added texture and color in these key areas will promote the use of the pool and pavilion within the theoretical traffic pattern which ultimately lead to utilization of the entire estate.
5Existing Deck
From its existing treated lumber frame and deck boards to an exotic composite decking system with custom pilling covers designed to match the pavilion and home, complete pavilion framed view from the water or land.
