Welcome
900 Jesus! Name of Wondrous Love
5 Jesus! Only name that’s giv’n
Under all the mighty heav’n
Whereby those to sin enslaved
Burst their fetters and are saved.
6 Jesus! Name of wondrous love,
Human name of God above;
Pleading only this, we flee
Helpless, O our God, to Thee. Tune and text: Public domain
Confession and Absolution LSB 151
The sign of the cross may be made by all in remembrance of their Baptism.
P In the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit.
C Amen.
P If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
C But if we confess our sins, God, who is faithful and just, will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all
unrighteousness.
Silence for reflection on God’s Word and for self-examination.
P Let us then confess our sins to God our Father.
C Most merciful God, we confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean. We have sinned against You in
thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved You
with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We justly deserve Your present and
eternal punishment. For the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and
lead us, so that we may delight in Your will and walk in Your ways to the glory of Your holy name. Amen.
P Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake forgives you all your sins. As a
called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of
the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit.
C Amen.
Service of the Word
Kyrie LSB 152
P In peace let us pray to the Lord.
C Lord, have mercy.
P For the peace from above and for our salvation let us pray to the Lord.
C Lord, have mercy.
P For the peace of the whole world, for the well-being of the Church of God, and for the unity of all let us pray to
the Lord.
C Lord, have mercy.
P For this holy house and for all who offer here their worship and praise let us pray to the Lord.
C Lord, have mercy.
3
P Help, save, comfort, and defend us, gracious Lord.
C Amen.
Gloria in Excelsis LSB 154
Salutation and Collect of the Day
P The Lord be with you.
C And also with you.
P Let us pray.
O God, because Your abiding presence always goes with us, keep us aware of Your daily mercies that we may
live secure and content in Your eternal love; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with
You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
C Amen.
Old Testament Reading Jeremiah 20:7–13
O LORD, you have deceived me, and I was deceived; you are stronger than I, and you have prevailed. I have
become a laughingstock all the day; everyone mocks me. For whenever I speak, I cry out, I shout, “Violence and
destruction!” For the word of the LORD has become for me a reproach and derision all day long. If I say, “I will not
mention him, or speak any more in his name,” there is in my heart as it were a burning fire shut up in my bones,
and I am weary with holding it in, and I cannot. For I hear many whispering. Terror is on every side! “Denounce him!
Let us denounce him!” say all my close friends, watching for my fall. “Perhaps he will be deceived; then we can
overcome him and take our revenge on him.” But the LORD is with me as a dread warrior; therefore my persecutors
4
will stumble; they will not overcome me. They will be greatly shamed, for they will not succeed. Their eternal
dishonor will never be forgotten. O LORD of hosts, who tests the righteous, who sees the heart and the mind, let me
see your vengeance upon them, for to you have I committed my cause. Sing to the LORD; praise the LORD! For he has
delivered the life of the needy from the hand of evildoers.
P This is the Word of the Lord.
C Thanks be to God.
Epistle Romans 6:12–23
Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal bodies, to make you obey their passions. Do not present your members to
sin as instruments for unrighteousness, but present yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to
life, and your members to God as instruments for righteousness. For sin will have no dominion over you, since you
are not under law but under grace.
What then? Are we to sin because we are not under law but under grace? By no means! Do you not know that if
you present yourselves to anyone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin, which
leads to death, or of obedience, which leads to righteousness? But thanks be to God, that you who were once slaves of
sin have become obedient from the heart to the standard of teaching to which you were committed, and, having been
set free from sin, have become slaves of righteousness. I am speaking in human terms, because of your natural
limitations. For just as you once presented your members as slaves to impurity and to lawlessness leading to more
lawlessness, so now present your members as slaves to righteousness leading to sanctification.
When you were slaves of sin, you were free in regard to righteousness. But what fruit were you getting at that time
from the things of which you are now ashamed? The end of those things is death. But now that you have been set free
from sin and have become slaves of God, the fruit you get leads to sanctification and its end, eternal life. For the
wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
P This is the Word of the Lord.
C Thanks be to God.
Alleluia and Verse LSB 156
C Alleluia. Lord, to whom shall we go?
You have the words of eternal life. Alleluia, alleluia.
Holy Gospel Matthew 10:5a, 21–33
P The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the tenth chapter.
C Glory to You, O Lord.
These twelve Jesus sent out, instructing them, . . .
“Brother will deliver brother over to death, and the father his child, and children will rise against parents and have
them put to death, and you will be hated by all for my name’s sake. But the one who endures to the end will be saved.
When they persecute you in one town, flee to the next, for truly, I say to you, you will not have gone through all the
towns of Israel before the Son of Man comes.
“A disciple is not above his teacher, nor a servant above his master. It is enough for the disciple to be like his
teacher, and the servant like his master. If they have called the master of the house Beelzebul, how much more will
they malign those of his household.
“So have no fear of them, for nothing is covered that will not be revealed, or hidden that will not be known. What I
tell you in the dark, say in the light, and what you hear whispered, proclaim on the housetops. And do not fear those
who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell. Are not two
sparrows sold for a penny? And not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father. But even the hairs of
your head are all numbered. Fear not, therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows. So everyone who
acknowledges me before men, I also will acknowledge before my Father who is in heaven, but whoever denies me
before men, I also will deny before my Father who is in heaven.”
P This is the Gospel of the Lord.
C Praise to You, O Christ.

Sermon “Baptized into God’s Story” Romans 6
Nicene Creed
C I believe in one God, the Father Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible.
And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of His Father before all worlds,
God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made,
being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made;
who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit
of the virgin Mary and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate.
He suffered and was buried. And the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures
and ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of the Father.
And He will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead,
whose kingdom will have no end.
And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son,
who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified, who spoke by the prophets.
And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church,
I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins,
and I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life T of the world to come. Amen.
Prayer of the Church
P O merciful Father, hear Your people as they pray in the name of Jesus on behalf of all manner and conditions of
people.
Brief silence
Faithful God, when we are fearful of our enemies and weary of the struggle, You have been our shield and our
strength. Grant to us the full measure of Your grace to sustain us against all who are against us, and help us to
endure the trials and temptations of this mortal life and be faithful unto death. Lord, in Your mercy,
C hear our prayer.
P Faithful God, with Your favor upon us, we pray You to help us in our fight against temptation and sin. Help us to
live holy and righteous lives by the power of Your Spirit, and keep us from surrendering ourselves to the slavery
from which Christ has set us free. Lord, in Your mercy,
C hear our prayer.
6
P Faithful God, with the witness of the saints before us and the courage of Your Holy Spirit within us, we pray
You to help us to maintain the faithful confession and to contend for the faith in our own age as did those who
confessed Christ at Augsburg. Give to all the churches of the Augsburg Confession unity of doctrine and
harmony of life together under the cross of Christ. Lord, in Your mercy,
C hear our prayer.
P Faithful God, give grace to those being baptized, to the catechumens in their instruction, and to all the places
where Your people gather to learn Your Word. Equip us to live out the promise of our baptismal life under Your
grace, and guide us to love our neighbors as You have loved us. Lord, in Your mercy,
C hear our prayer.
P Faithful God, give healing and strength to the sick and all afflicted in body or mind, and grant to those who
struggle the gift of peace of mind and heart. Hear us especially for those who have requested our prayers
[including _____________] and those whom we name in our hearts now. Restore our nation and the world in
health and livelihood, and preserve us from pestilence and fear. Lord, in Your mercy,
C hear our prayer.
P Faithful God, give courage to those near life’s end and comfort those who mourn [especially _____________].
As we recall the saints who trusted in You in life and who died in Christ, encourage us by the witness of Your
grace and their faith, so that when Christ comes in His glory we may be found faithful and delivered with them
into the glory of Your eternal presence. Lord, in Your mercy,
C hear our prayer.
P Faithful God, by Your Word and table You continue to feed and nourish Your people with all that will sustain
our lives and faith. Help us to receive these gifts with faith and with repentance. Bring us to that day when all
earthly divisions will cease and, united in faith, we shall be one people before Your altar. Lord, in Your mercy,
C hear our prayer.
P All these things, Father, and everything else for which we need, we pray You to grant us for the sake of our
Savior Jesus Christ, who died and rose and lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and
forever.
C Amen.
Service of the Sacrament
Preface LSB 160
P The Lord be with you.
C And also with you.
P Lift up your hearts.
C We lift them to the Lord.
P Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
C It is right to give Him thanks and praise.
Celebration of the Lord's Supper
If you are a member of an LCMS congregation we invite you to join us this today for Holy Communion. Lutherans believe that the
celebration of Lord’s Supper is the eating and drinking of the body and blood of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of sin and
strengthening of faith. We also believe Holy Communion is a sign of oneness of faith, life, and worship. We ask that if you have
not communed with us before, and would like to receive Communion please visit with one of the elders on duty or one of the
Pastors so that we may be of help to you concerning your participation in this Holy Supper. Anyone is welcome to come forward
to receive a blessing. Simply indicate your desire by crossing your arms over your chest.

The Words of Our Lord
P Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke
it and gave it to the disciples and said: “Take, eat; this is My T body, which is given for you. This do in
remembrance of Me.”
In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying:
“Drink of it, all of you; this cup is the new testament in My T blood, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of
sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”
P As often as we eat this bread and drink this cup, we proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes.
C Amen. Come, Lord Jesus.
Lord’s Prayer
C Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name,
Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven;
give us this day our daily bread;
and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.
Agnus Dei LSB 163
C Lamb of God, You take away the sin of the world; have mercy on us.
Lamb of God, You take away the sin of the world; have mercy on us.
Lamb of God, You take away the sin of the world; grant us peace.

Building Healthy Families: Many of us grew up
learning to be tough and to never ask for help. But in
recent years, we have found that if we ask for help, we
can get it from our friends, our family, our pastor and
other helpers. Don’t try to be the Lone Ranger. God has
placed numerous people in our lives to help us.
Remember Paul’s admonition in the last chapter of
Galatians: “Bear one another’s burdens, and so
fulfill the law of Christ.” Galatians 6:2 When you allow
others to care for you, you allow them to grow in their
relationship to Christ. LutheranFamilyService.org

GOD’S GREATER STORY
A SERMON SERIES ON ROMANS 6-14 Since 2005, National Public Radio has been airing a series called “This I Believe.” Individuals from all walks of life have written and submitted their stories of faith. Essays on what they believe. These essays are exploratory. Finding blessing in work. Discovering joy in being a neighbor. Trying to have faith in the midst of the messiness of life. The essays are also fragmentary. With over 9 years of testimony and over 70,000 stories archived on the web, “This I Believe” invites you into a world of many beliefs, many personal approaches to the self, to one another, and sometimes to God. One soon discovers that there are as many stories of belief as there are people believing and belief becomes a fragmentary collection of various experiences in the world. In this sermon series, we add one more story to the collection. This one dates from around 55 – 58 AD and comes from the apostle Paul. Paul was in Corinth, about to journey to Jerusalem to bring an offering from the churches to the poor. As he anticipated that journey, however, he lifted up his eyes and saw something much larger: a missionary trip to Spain. Along the way, he planned to stop by Rome, a place he had never visited. So he sent a letter ahead. To introduce himself as an apostle and to give the Roman church a vision of what he believed. “This I believe,” the apostle Paul said. As you listen to Paul’s belief, however, you hear a greater story. Paul is not speaking of a belief that is only for himself, a personal theology or a record of his personal spiritual journey. Paul is speaking of God and God’s work among his people, a saving work that includes all nations and that extends throughout all time. Paul’s words of faith are not for himself alone but for all peoples. Paul tells the Romans and us God’s greater story. Join us now as we enter into the sermon series, “God’s Greater Story.” Listen in as Paul offers his theological vision: a vision of God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit at work to raise a people for his purpose in the world. Experience God’s claim upon your life as he joins you to a people who have a purpose in his plan to renew creation and reclaim all nations for him.
