Pastor Talk . . . From the Pen of Ben Lander
Trinity Talk Page 2 September 2017
Fred Craddock was a seminary professor. Once, while he was lecturing at Yale
University, he told of going back one summer to Gatlinburg, TN, to take a short
vacation with his wife. One night they found a quiet little restaurant where they looked forward to a private meal.
While they were waiting for their meal they noticed a distinguished looking white-
haired man moving from table to table, visiting guests. Craddock whispered to his
wife, “I hope he doesn’t come over here.” He didn’t want the man to intrude on their
privacy.
But the man did come by his table. “Where you folks from?” he asked amicably.
“Oklahoma. I teach homiletics at the graduate seminary of Phillips University.”
“Oh, so you teach preachers, do you. Well, I’ve got a story I want to tell you.” And with that he pulled up a chair and sat down at the table with Craddock and his wife. Dr. Craddock groaned
inwardly. Oh, no, here comes another preacher story. It seems everyone has one.
The man stuck out his hand. “I’m Ben Hooper. I was born not far from here across the mountains. My
mother wasn’t married when I was born so I had a hard time. When I started to school my classmates had a
name for me, and it wasn’t a very nice name. I used to go off by myself at recess and during lunchtime because the taunts of my playmates cut so deeply.
“What was worse was going downtown on Saturday afternoon and feeling every eye burning a hole through
you. They were all wondering just who my real father was.
“When I was about 12 years old a new preacher came to our church. I would always go in late and slip out
early. But one day the preacher said the benediction so fast I got caught and had to walk out with the crowd.
I could feel every eye in church on me. Just about the time I got to the door, I felt a big hand on my
shoulder. I looked up and the preacher was looking right at me.
“’Who are you, son? Whose boy are you?’
“I felt the old weight come down on me. It was like a big, black cloud. Even the preacher was putting me
down.
“But as he looked down at me, studying my face, he began to smile a big smile of recognition. ‘Wait a minute,’ he said, ‘I know who you are. I see the family resemblance. You are a child of God.’
“With that, he slapped me across the rump and said, ‘Boy, you’ve got a great inheritance. Go and claim it.’”
The old man looked across the table at Fred Craddock and said, “That was the most important single
sentence ever said to me.” With that, he smiled, shook the hand of Craddock and his wife, and moved on to another table to greet old friends.
Suddenly, Fred Craddock remembered. On two occasions, the people of Tennessee had elected an
illegitimate to be their governor. His name was Ben Hooper.
(From Power for Living, by Jamie Buckingham, 1983)
I Love this story. Every time I hear it, I think of Galatians 3:26, “For you are all children of God through
faith in Christ Jesus.” What an inheritance we have. Let’s go claim it!

CANCER COMPANION MINISTRY
COMES TO TRINITY
Cancer Companions is a new
ministry that is starting at
Trinity in October.
Cancer Companions is a
unique support ministry for
cancer patients, their family
and caregivers. It is important to stress that this is not a “12-Step Program” or a “Celebrate Recovery
Program.” CC is a church-based program that will
provide a safe and secure environment for cancer
patients, families and caregivers to draw closer to
Christ using a Scripture-based program. This support
is provided in both a group setting or a one on one
setting.
On September 16 & 17, 23 & 24 and 30 & Oct. 1, an
information table will be setup and manned in the
Narthex before and after services to answer questions
and provide information about this wonderful new
ministry. We urge you to take a few minutes and stop by the table to see what this ministry has to offer. It
might just be what you or your loved one needs. This
program is provided at no cost. For information,
contact Jan McMillen at: jmcmillen@trinityjoppa.org or
Tom Reed at treed@trinityjoppa.org.

OCTOBER DONATION DRIVE
TO SUPPORT OUR
ANTIHUMAN TRAFFICKING MINISTRY
October 1 we will kick off our
donation drive to help support
women, who have been rescued
from human trafficking at The
Samaritan Women Program.
This program houses up to 14
women who were rescued from
human trafficking, provides them
with counseling, education, life skills, Bible study, love, hope, how
to trust others again and help to rebuild their lives.
Last year, we adopted 7 residents for Christmas. For
several, this was the first time they ever received a
Christmas gift.
TSW program depends on donations from their church
partners to help with daily supplies. With 14 women in
a house, you can imagine how much toilet paper and
paper towels they us in a week.
With that said, starting October 1, we will be collecting, toilet paper, paper towels, feminine hygiene
products, laundry detergent, dish soap, bath gel,
shampoo, toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant,
socks and underwear (new only in the package).
Cash donations are also acceptable. Cash and checks
(made out to TLC) may be given to Jan McMillen and
Carmela Gorub or placed in the offering plate sealed
and marked Jan McMillen - Human Trafficking.
Your support of these ladies
helps more then you can
imagine. Their stories are
beyond heartbreaking. No human being should ever
have to endure this type of
treatment.
Your donation matters. Thank you.
TRINITY BLOOD DRIVE
On Sunday, August 13, we had the first blood drive here at Trinity in a year. It was most
successful. Thanks to all who came to donate. Our goal was 16 units of whole blood. We
collected 25 units of blood which will help 75 patients. We ended up with156 percent of
goal. At this drive, we had 5 first time donors and the first time donors were given a $5 gift
card to Chick-fil-A courtesy of Adrian Cox. All donors will receive a $5 gift card to Target from
the Red Cross. In addition we had a drawing, for donors, of a $20 gift card to Chick-fil-A. Barbara Gorton's name was drawn.
In addition to our usual Blood Drive team, we had the assistance of two high school students
who were completing their community service. A special thank you to the team and to Emma
and Megan Hansen.
SAVE THE DATE
Our next blood drive will be on
Sunday, October 22
from 8 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.
Please help us reach our goal and give the life saving gift of blood.

Trinity Lutheran Christian School and Early Learning Center News
OUR NEW YEAR THEME:
“A NEW CREATION”
The Apostle Paul writes these insightful words: “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ,
he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come” - II Corinthians 5:17.
The greatest proven historical fact is that Jesus The Christ lived, died, and rose again
for every human being. Because Christ died, and rose for us, we also are to be dead to
our old lives and dedicated to live new lives to the pleasing of Christ.
Christians are given a new life through the Holy Spirit - we are not the same anymore—we are brand-new people on the inside. Christians begin a new life under a new Master.
Our Chapel Services will feature each month a lifestyle trait through which our Lord provides us with a living
witness as to what it means to be “A New Creation.” All our teaching, lifestyle modeling and corrective dis-
cipline will be based on what it means to be “A New Creation.”
Trinity families are invited and encouraged to partner with their school in the teaching of the
appointed monthly spiritual trait themes.
September - Friendship
October - Creativity
November - Gratitude
December - Generosity
January - Commitment

2018 MUSICAL
WE ARE EXCITED TO ANNOUNCE NEXT YEAR’S
MUSICAL….
“For where your treasure is,
there your heart will be also.”
~Luke 12:34 A group of kids just arrived on
Treasure Island and can’t wait to
discover the treasure that’s in
store for them. With the guidance of Captain Fisher
and a map, they start out on an adventure seeking
something more valuable than gold. Though Captain
Fisher was once a pirate searching for the riches of this
world, he now seeks God’s kingdom as a fisher of men.
Captain Fisher teaches the kids that they should
always pursue godly wisdom and eternal riches. Join
this musical adventure and discover the everlasting
value of storing up treasures in heaven and continually
seeking God! Auditions will be held on October 10 and October 17! For more information, contact Ryan
