Introduction / timber
• Timber construction has been proposed asone solution to climate change mitigation inthe construction sector
• However, disposing / recycling morecomplicated than for steel or concrete.
• Landfill Directive will end landfilling timber by 2020.• Incineration is not recycling according to the Waste
Framework Directive.

Introduction / reuse design
• The majority of demolished buildings are timberbuildings in Finland
• Architects have been attributed with the possibility toincrease demand and supply for reclaimed timber.
• Design from reclaimed components is associatedwith high cost due to:
• Difficulty of procurement• Inconsistent quantity, quality, dimensions and incompatibility of available
products• The need for redesign rounds that follow from the above

1. Divide the spatial programme into smaller rooms or volumes2. Split the structure into smaller sections3. Avoid equal spans and dimensions4. Split the structure according to the function5. Utilize efficient forms that allow using smaller pieces for longer spans6. Define ranges instead of fixed properties7. Rotate and repurpose8. Select the application according to the properties9.
