Portrait Photography
Portrait photography
• focus of the photograph is one person and usually their face
• the subjects of portrait photography are often non-professional models
• most often intended for private viewing rather than for public exhibition.
• has been around since the invention and popularization of the camera in the 1800’s
Portrait Photography Tips
• There are thousands of websites that deal with tips and tricks for taking perfect portraits.
• Visit the following website and take notes on the 10 tips for portrait photography in your notebook:
• Think about how you can use these tips in your portrait
Portrait photography isn't easy - just pointing a camera at
someone isn't generally going to get you a great photo.
What can you do to increase the number of quality photos
you take?
CompositionCrop In CloseHave a scan through any newspaper or magazine and you’ll soon see how tight portraits are usually cropped in the professional media. By cropping close and not having blank space all around the subjects head, the readers eyes have less space within the photo to escape to.
Depth of Field•Use a narrow depth of field•This means using your portrait setting or a large aperture in manual settings•This will blur the background and put the focus straight on the subject
Tell a Story•An effective portrait will show emotion•The background may have clues to what the persons occupation is •A smile isn’t necessary•A portrait may be more than just a face, but the main subject is ALWAYS one person.
What About Light•Don’t forget to think about your lighting and how that effects the mood of the picture
Portrait Photographers1. Pick one of the following photographers and write a short 1 paragraph
biography and find an example of one piece of their work2. Create page for you wiki portfolio titled “(your name) Portrait Photography”3. Remember to cite your sources and include information about their
