Professor Eric Dey

• Eric earned a Ph.D. in Higher Education from UCLA and Master of Education and Bachelor of General Studies degrees from Wichita State University.

His Research• He studied the ways colleges and

universities shape the experiences and lives of students and faculty. The central concern of his work was to identify the influence that different institutional structures have on individuals, and the degree to which these influences are dependent on the evolving context within which the enterprise of higher education operates.

Eric’s Impact

• Eric was a member of the team of social scientists tapped to provide research on the educational effects of diverse student bodies; this work was foundational to the Supreme Court's decision supporting the continuing use of affirmative action in college admissions.

Honors

• In 1998, Dey was selected as one of forty "Young Leaders of the Academy" nationally by Change magazine and was the 1996 recipient of the distinguished Early Career Achievement Award from ASHE. More recently, ASHE also honored his work on the University of Michigan's Affirmative Action Legal Defense team with a Special Merit Award in 2003.

Le Monde: “Dey Increases Lead Over Armstrong!!”

Eric’s “Finish”• “I was climbing Col d’Ichère — about three

hours into the ride — when I was caught by the voiture balai (the broom wagon) — a car outfitted with a large digital clock and a sign indicating that the end of the course had reached me, and my race was over. A gendarme standing near the place I was swept smiled and said “It’s hard, no?” Some villagers trotted over to shake my hand in congratulations for my efforts, and took my picture while I sat on a boulder and awaited the semi-trailer truck that would take my bike across the finish line well in advance of the winner.”

• “The reactions of people who have seen that photo have been interesting, and most have been surprised that the picture was taken after the race, not before, as I look happy and satisfied.”

“Perhaps I should have upgraded my bicycle”

“Maybe I didn’t finish atop two wheels, but I

had the ride of my life.”
