KEYNOTESPEAKERJoshFeldman,actorandcreatorof“TheChances,”isawriterwhowonaYoungPlaywrightsAwardfromArenaStageinWashington,D.C.,andhashadhisworkpublishedinonlinepublicationsaswellasinHustlermagazine.He’sfromadeaffamilyandwenttoGallaudetUniversityinWashingtonD.C.DuringhisfirstfewyearsinL.A.,heworkedasascriptreaderandasawriteratanimmigrationlawfirmbeforefocusingexclusivelyonwriting.

PARTICIPANTBIOSNathanCheung(He,Him,His)isagraduatingCommunicationseniorandMusicIndustryandLatinAmericanStudiesminor.HegrewupinHongKongandisasinger-songwriter.HaroldFrancisco(He,Him,His)HaroldFranciscoisatransferstudentatUCLAwhomajorsinLatinandAncientGreek.Hisinterestsareasmultitudinousashisidentity.Hedabblesingenderandqueertheory,politicaltheory,andstudiesliterature.HisstudiesinAncientGreekdreamculturehaveledtohisHonorsThesisonFoucaultandArtemidorus.InadditiontoLatinandAncientGreek,hestudiedFrench,Italian,Mandarin,andSpanish.However,heisonlyfluentinTagalogandEnglish.Hekeepshisownblogwherehewritessatire,literaryreviews,andfiction.HehasseenallofGuillermoDelToro’smoviesandhasevenbeentoaDelToroexhibitionatLACMA.Heisamuseumjunkyandhasbeentomuseumsacrosstheworld.Heisaconstantloverofart,nature,andthe“otherness”inbothartandnature.HehopesthathisundergraduatecareeratUCLAwillleadtoahigherdegree.Heenjoysreading,playingvideogames,andspendingtimewithhisdog,Fimoni.

AidaGhorbani(She,Her,Hers)isafourth-yearUCLAGenderStudiesmajorandLGBTQStudiesminor.Theywillbegraduatingattheendofspring2017.Afterfinishingtheirundergraduateeducation,theyhopetostartanMFAinNewMediaArts,andthencontinueinacademia,working,creating,andactingontheintersectionsofqueer,Muslim,MiddleEastern,femme,disabled,workingclass,andimmigrantidentity.BrittanyHewitt(She,Her,Hers)isaqueer,Latina-AmericanbornandraisedinMiami.Currently,sheisathird-yearstudentatUCLA(Classof2018)andstudiesGlobalStudies,Film/Television/DigitalMediaandGenderStudies.Brittanyintendstopursueacareerintheworldofgenderrightsactivismandsheiscurrentlyfocusingonhowfeminismcanbedefinedinthemodernwomanandtheplacegenderhasinthepresentworld.Brittanytypicallychannelsherangerandtranquilityusingslampoetry.BrendaSelenaLara(She,Her,Hers)isafourth-yearundergraduatestudentmajoringinPhilosophyandminoringinChicanaandChicanoStudies.ShewillbegraduatingSpring2017.Aftergraduation,shewantstotakeabreakfromacademiaforthesummerandtravelsomewherealthoughshehasnoideawhereyet.InFall2017,shewilljoinUCLA’sChicanaandChicanoStudiesPhDProgram’ssixthcohort.Inhersparetime,sheisanactiveNetflixuserwiththeabilitytobingeanentiresitcomseasoninadayandhopesthatonedaythisskillwillcomeinhandyforsomethingotherthanprocrastination.HaoranLi(He,Him,His)isathird-yearSociologymajorandGlobalStudiesminoratUCLA.HegrewupinShenzhen,ChinaandmovedtotheU.S.forcollege.HeisanadvocateforSexualHarassmentInterventionAdvocacyGroupinChinaandpsychologicalsupportteamleaderatAsianDevelopmentServiceGroupintheU.S.Hismainresearchinterestsincludeinternalizedhomophobia,socialalienation,andimmigrantfemaleworkers’rights.TimnaNaim(They/Them/Theirs)isamovement,installation,andperformanceartistengagedinmovementpracticesandceramicsculpturalwork.Theyarecurrentlyinvestigatingtheintra-/interpersonalaspectsofidentityandcreativeexpression’seffectonidentityformation.Theyareanorganizerandhistorianwhocreatesaccessiblespacesthroughartactionsandcollaboratesonconsciousness

raisinggroupsatUCLA.TheystudyDance,LGBTQStudies,andArtsEducationandleadstudentorganizationslikeQueerArtsCollectiveandContactImprovUCLA.IntheirtimeatUCLA,theyhaveworkedcloselywithfacultysuchasPeterSellars,KevinMyers,Cheng-ChiehYu,ShelWagnerRasch,AnnCarlson,RennieHarris,andNeginGhavami.TheyhaveworkedasaTeachingArtistwithFremontHighSchool,HoopaValleyElementary,RenaissanceArtsAcademy,andtheBatesDanceFestival.TheyhaveshownperformanceworkatUCLA’sGloryaKaufmanHall,UCLA’sBroadArtsCenter,andtheBatesDanceFestivalinbothsummer2015and2016.EmilyPadilla(they)identifiesasqueerandgendernon-conformingandpreferstobecalled‘Emily.’TheyareanUCLAtransferstudentmajoringinGenderStudiesandminoringinLGBTQStudies;theyalsointendtodeclareasecondminorinDisabilityStudies.TheirprojectedgraduationdateisJune2018.Onereallyneatthingaboutthemisthattheywereaprofessionalpetgroomerfornearlythreeyears,andhasworkedwithhundredsofdogsandvariouscats.Theyalsoco-parentaneighteen-year-oldcatnamedJemma,whomwecallBunny,asshenolongerhasatail(It’salongstory).BrockThompson(He,Him,His)isafourth-yearBiologymajorandLGBTQStudiesminor.He’soriginallyfromSouthDakotaandjoinedtheU.S.AirForceandwenttobasictrainingtwoweeksaftergraduatinghighschool.AfterbeingstationedatTravisAFB,CAasanaircraftmechanichedeployedtwotimestoQatarinsupportofOperationIraqiFreedomandOperationEnduringFreedom.Hethenshiftedgearsbecomingamedicandsupportedotherbranchesofthemilitarystateside.HetransferredtoUCLAin2015andwillbegraduatingSpring2017withaB.S.inBiologyandaminorinLGBTQStudies.PiWrightisaseniormajoringinEnglishattheUniversityofCalifornia,LosAngelesandwillbegraduatingintheSpringof2017.PriortomovingtoLosAngeles,theycreatedandtaughtartataceramicsstudioinLosGatos,California.AfunfactaboutPiisthattheyareapublishedpoet.

PROGRAMSUPPORTProfessorAliciaGaspardeAlba(She,Her,Hers)isaProfessorofChicana/oStudies,English,andGenderStudiesatUCLA.Since2013,shehasservedasChairoftheLGBTQStudiesProgram.Profehaspublished11books,amongthemaward-winningnovelsandacademicworksaswellaspoetryandshortfiction.Agreatbelieverinstudent-runprojectslikeQScholarsandQGrad,sheisalsothefacultysponsorofQueerCatsJournalofLGBTQStudies,thefirstqueergraduate-studentopen-accessE-scholarshipjournalatUCLA.www.aliciagaspardealba.net.TomarionBrown(She,Her,Hers)istheLGBTQStudiesProgramcoordinator/studentadvisor/eventadministrator/programrecruiter.Inadditiontorunningtheprogram,shealsoenjoysspendingtimewithherwifeof4yearsandtheir14-month-olddaughter.
