About Udaipur• The city of Udaipur, also known as ‘The City of Lakes’, is one of

the most important cities of Rajasthan. It’s separated from the Thar desert by the Aravali ranges.

• Udaipur city lies at the southern end of the Aravali hills and is located at 24°31’ N and 73°34’ E. It’s situated at a height of 598 m above sea level and is spread over 37 sq km. Since the place lies close to the Thar desert and also houses a lot of lakes, the weather is generally hot and humid.

• Udaipur is well-connected to most of the urban regions of North India via roads, railways and air. It lies in the south-west of Jaipur at a distance of 405 km. The city is at a distance of 663 km from Delhi, 620 km from Gwalior, 637 km from Agra and 797 km from Mumbai.

Udaipur History• Udaipur is a royal city that had been the capital of Mewar

rulers for centuries. Acc. To legends Maharana Udai Singh happened to meet a holy sage when he was on his hunting expedition in the Aravalli Hills. The Sage counseled the King to establish a kingdom in the fertile valley that would be well-protected by the elevated Aravalli Hills. Subsequently, Maharana Udai Singh laid the foundation stone of Udaipur in 1557 A.D.

• Udaipur continued to be the capital of Mewar, till it became the princely state of British India in 1818. When India got independent in 1947, the Maharaja of Udaipur granted the place to the Government of India. At that time, Mewar was merged into the state of Rajasthan.

an interconnected lake system which helps in the regeneration of ground water and regulates the climatic conditions. Fateh Sagar Lake, Jaisamand Lake, Lake Pichola, Lake Badi and Doodh Talai Lake are some of the famous lakes here.

• World's Most Romantic Hotel Lake Palace or Jag Nivas in the Lake Pichola is now a heritage hotel run by Taj group. It was once a summer palace of Sisodia rulers. It is voted as the most romantic hotel in the world and in India.

Kumbhalgarh Fort built by Rana Kumbha has the longest wall which is second only to the 'Great Wall of China'. Kumbhalgarh Fort one of the prominent forts built by the rulers of Mewar. Kumbhalgarh Fort is now situated in Rajasmand district. It once belonged to Mewar Kingdom.

• Asia's Second Largest Artificial Lake Jaisamand Lake or Dhebar Lake is considered as the second largest artificial lake in Asia. It was constructed during the rule of Rana Jai Singh. Jaisamand Lake consists of 7 islands and a largest dam. The lake was built while constructing a dam for the Gomti River.

Palace of Udaipur is a huge complex of palaces. It was started in 1553 by Maharana Udai Singh II. Many other palaces were built by several kings inside the City Palace area. Hence, the City Palace is said to be built over a long period.

• Sahastra-Bahu (Sas-Bahu) Temples Sahastra-Bahu Temples are now famously known as 'Sas-Bahu' temples. Historical records say, that Sahastra Bahu means 'Vishnu with 1000 arms' but the local stories suggest a different tale. Sas-Bahu means 'mother-in-law' and 'daughter-in-law', meaning one side was built according to mother-in-law and the other side according to daughter-in-law. They're situated in Nagda at Udaipur.
