A true greenfield terrain
As weve heard today, there is not a lot of information currently available
on the Coompana Province
However a little data makes a lot of difference, we can already begin to
place geodynamic controls on the region from a little existing drilling
There are many challenges but the potential exists for huge gains
The opportunity exists for explorers to become first movers in a new
province, working collaboratively with the GSSA
-
3Department of State Development
Part of a bigger project
The Coompana campaign forms part of a larger collaborative program of
data collection and geoscience looking to understand and open up the
western margins of the Gawler Craton
This includes the underexplored western Gawler Craton together with the
Musgrave Province and Coompana Province
-
4Department of State Development
A collaborative effort
This is a big task and opens the way for extensive collaboration between
the GSSA and our partners under the banner of the UNCOVER initiative:

5Department of State Development
Opening up a frontier
The GSSA, in collaboration with our partners, are committed to de-risking
exploration in the far west of SA and opening up a new frontier for mineral
exploration
This includes a huge $ investment in pre-competitive data collection and the
Western Margins project being a Tier 1 priority for the GSSA
To date ~$6.5M committed or expended PACE precompetitive data collection = $1.7M EG1 Seismic line
$1.3M Coompana Magnetics and Radiometrics
$600K AusLAMP ($540K from Geoscience Australia)
$50K Regional Biogeochemistry
$20K Passive seismic and AMT
$1.0M Regional gravity
$2.25M (currently) Coompana regional drilling
So what is planned
-
6Department of State Development
Magnetics old and new
New data collected at 400m and 200m (over Coompana Mag Anomaly)
255264 line kms Available now via SARIG
-
7Department of State Development
Biogeochemistry
This reconnaissance biogeochemical survey was
designed to sample common plant species and
establish a first reference biogeochemical dataset for
future exploration
leaves analysed for 65 elements
dominant species are bladder saltbush and pearl
bluebush, with samphire also present across the
Nullarbor Plain
Available now via SARIG
-
8Department of State Development
Re-analysis of existing samples
A number of existing wells have been sampled and re-analysed. This
includes new geochronology, geochemistry and isotopic data.
Unfortunately mostly from cuttings
A UofA honours project has already been completed looking at the
petrogenesis of the Coompana basalts
New mapping, geochronology, geochemistry and
Isotopic analysis on the St Peter Suite. A re-appraisal
of a potential correlative of the Coompana basement is
currently underway

Whats coming results of EG1 seismic line
Results from the EG1 deep crustal seismic
reflection profile will be released at a dedicated
session at the 2016 AESC conference in
Adelaide
The data will be available for download from
SARIG mid June
Results from the western Gawler Craton
section are available now (Dutch et al., 2015.
GSSA Report book 2015/00029)
-
10Department of State Development
Whats coming New Gravity
A new Gravity data set will be collected later this year. ~5500 stations at
2km, 8300 stations at 1km and 1500 stations at 500m spacing
-
11Department of State Development
Whats coming Radiometrics
A new radiometric dataset
is currently in QA/QC
This dataset will fill a major
gap in the states
radiometric data and
provide useful information
of landforms (locations of
caves?)
-
12Department of State Development
Whats coming New DEM
New 400m and 200m
resolution radar altimeter DEM
image
Landform analysis
Neotectonic analysis
Mineral sands exploration
Available via SARIG soon
-
13Department of State Development
Whats coming Modelling of Magnetic intrusions
In collaboration with Clive Foss, CSIRO.
Depth to magnetic basement.
Accurate locations of remnantly magnetized bodies.
-
14Department of State Development
Whats coming Passive Seismic & AMT
In collaboration with GA six sites of short deployment passive seismic arrays (13
instruments) and AMT have been collected over existing drill holes with known
constraints.
This is a test case to see how well these techniques image the overlying cover
and provide accurate depth to basement estimates.
If successful will be rolled out over planned drill sites

15Department of State Development
Whats coming AusLAMP results
Geoscience Australia, the University of
Adelaide and the GSSA has completed
acquisition of the AusLAMP MT array in
the west of SA
This dataset will provide important
constraints on the lithospheric
architecture of this margin. Particularly
useful when coupled with the EG1
seismic and MT line
Currently awaiting results
-
16Department of State Development
Whats coming Geochemical and Provenance study of cover sequences
The GSSA in collaboration with the Energy Resources Group and the ASP are
planning to re-asses the stratigraphy of the overlying Officer, Denman and Bight
basins.
This will include full suite lithogeochemical profiling and zircon provenance study
-
17Department of State Development
Whats coming Regional Drilling Program
Planned for a Q2 2017 start. The GSSA (potentially in collaboration with
Geoscience Australia) will undertake a ~$2.25M regional drilling program in the
Coompana Province and western margins region
Planning is currently underway and more details will follow soon
