THE BIRTH OF ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST: PATRONAL FESTIVAL HOLY EUCHARIST
SUNDAY, JUNE 26TH, 2016
St. John the Baptist (Dixie)
Anglican Church
719 Dundas Street East
Mississauga, ON L4Y 2B5
Processional Hymn: #106 – “THERE’S A VOICE IN THE WILDERNESS” Please stand & sing
There's a voice in the wilderness crying, a call from the ways untrod:
prepare in the desert a highway, a highway for our God!
The valleys shall be exalted, the lofty hills brought low;
make straight all the crooked places where the Lord our God may go!
O Zion, give voice to good tidings, ascend to the heights and sing!
Proclaim to a desolate people the coming of their King.
The works of pride all perish, like flowers they shall decay;
the power and pomp of nations shall pass like a dream away.
But your word, O God, is faithful, your arm, O Lord, is strong;
you stand in the midst of nations, and you will right the wrong.
You will feed your flock like a shepherd, and fold the lambs to your breast;
in pastures of peace you'll lead them, and give to the weary rest.
There's a voice in the wilderness crying, a call from the ways untrod:
prepare in the desert a highway, a highway for our God!
The valleys shall be exalted, the lofty hills brought low;
make straight all the crooked places where the Lord our God may go!
The Gathering of the Community
Leader: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of
the Holy Spirit, be with you all.
People: And also with you.
Leader: Almighty God,
All: to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are
hidden. Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy
Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy name;
through Christ our Lord. Amen. Please kneel or be seated
Leader: Almighty God, you called John the Baptist to give witness to the coming of your
Son and to prepare his way. Give your people the wisdom to see your purpose,
and the openness to hear your will, that we too may witness to Christ’s coming
and so prepare his way; through your Son Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and
reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God now and for ever.
All: Amen.
Reader: A Reading from the Prophet Isaiah. Please be seated
Comfort, O comfort my people, says your God. Speak tenderly to Jerusalem, and cry to her
that she has served her term, that her penalty is paid, that she has received from the Lord's
hand double for all her sins. A voice cries out: "In the wilderness prepare the way of the
Lord, make straight in the desert a highway for our God. Every valley shall be lifted up,
and every mountain and hill be made low; the uneven ground shall become level, and the
rough places a plain. Then the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all people shall see
it together, for the mouth of the Lord has spoken." A voice says, "Cry out!" And I said,
"What shall I cry?" All people are grass, their constancy is like the flower of the field. The
grass withers, the flower fades, when the breath of the Lord blows upon it; surely the people
are grass. The grass withers, the flower fades; but the word of our God will stand forever.
Get you up to a high mountain, O Zion, herald of good tidings; lift up your voice with
strength, O Jerusalem, herald of good tidings, lift it up, do not fear; say to the cities of
Judah, "Here is your God!" See, the Lord God comes with might, and his arm rules for
him; his reward is with him, and his recompense before him. He will feed his flock like a
shepherd; he will gather the lambs in his arms, and carry them in his bosom, and gently
lead the mother sheep.

the Lord God is saying, for he is speaking peace to his faithful people and to those
who fear him, that his glory may dwell in our land. All sing the refrain
Cantor: Mercy and truth have met together; righteousness and peace have kissed each
other. Truth shall spring up from the earth, and righteousness shall look down
from heaven. All sing the refrain
Cantor: The Lord will indeed grant prosperity, and our land will yield its increase.
Righteousness shall go before him, and peace shall be a pathway for his feet.
All sing the refrain
Reader: A Reading from the Acts of the Apostles.
Paul stood up and with a gesture began to speak: "You Israelites, and others who fear God,
listen. The God of this people Israel chose our ancestors and made the people great during
their stay in the land of Egypt, and with uplifted arm he led them out of it. For about forty
years he put up with them in the wilderness. After he had destroyed seven nations in the
land of Canaan, he gave them their land as an inheritance for about four hundred fifty years.
After that he gave them judges until the time of the prophet Samuel. Then they asked for a
king; and God gave them Saul son of Kish, a man of the tribe of Benjamin, who reigned
for forty years. When he had removed him, he made David their king. In his testimony
about him he said, 'I have found David, son of Jesse, to be a man after my heart, who will
carry out all my wishes.' Of this man's posterity God has brought to Israel a Saviour, Jesus,
as he promised; before his coming John had already proclaimed a baptism of repentance to
all the people of Israel. And as John was finishing his work, he said, 'What do you suppose
that I am? I am not he. No, but one is coming after me; I am not worthy to untie the thong
of the sandals on his feet.' My brothers, you descendants of Abraham's family, and others
who fear God, to us the message of this salvation has been sent."
Reader: The word of the Lord. Acts 13.14b-26
People: Thanks be to God. A moment of silence is observed
Sequence Hymn: (Tune #383) #12 – “WE BLESS YOU GOD OF ISRAEL” Please stand & sing
The first two verses are sung before the Gospel.
We bless you, God of Israel; you come to set your people free.
In Jesus, born of David's line, salvation springs for all to see.
You promised through the prophets' word to save your people from their foes;
in freedom they will worship you, fearless, delivered from their woes.
The last two verses will be sung; after the Gospel.
This child will go before the Lord, the vanguard of Messiah's way,
preaching forgiveness full and free – the prelude to God's perfect day.
Your tender love, like early dawn, heralds the day of endless peace;
the darkness of death's shadow fades; your justice reigns, and will not cease.
The Gospel
Leader: The Lord be with you. People: And also with you.
Leader: The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke.
All:
Now the time came for Elizabeth to give birth, and she bore a son. Her neighbours and
relatives heard that the Lord had shown his great mercy to her, and they rejoiced with her.
On the eighth day they came to circumcise the child, and they were going to name him
Zechariah after his father. But his mother said, "No; he is to be called John." They said to
her, "None of your relatives has this name." Then they began motioning to his father to
find out what name he wanted to give him. He asked for a writing tablet and wrote, "His
name is John." And all of them were amazed. Immediately his mouth was opened and his
tongue freed, and he began to speak, praising God. Fear came over all their neighbours,
and all these things were talked about throughout the entire hill country of Judea. All who
heard them pondered them and said, "What then will this child become?" For, indeed, the
hand of the Lord was with him. Then his father Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit
and spoke this prophecy: "Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, for he has looked favourably
on his people and redeemed them. He has raised up a mighty saviour for us in the house of
his servant David, as he spoke through the mouth of his holy prophets from of old, that we
would be saved from our enemies and from the hand of all who hate us. Thus he has shown
the mercy promised to our ancestors, and has remembered his holy covenant, the oath that
he swore to our ancestor Abraham, to grant us that we, being rescued from the hands of
our enemies, might serve him without fear, in holiness and righteousness before him all
our days. And you, child, will be called the prophet of the Most High; for you will go before
the Lord to prepare his ways, to give knowledge of salvation to his people by the
forgiveness of their sins.
By the tender mercy of our God, the dawn from on high will break upon us, to give light
to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of
peace." The child grew and became strong in spirit, and he was in the wilderness until the
day he appeared publicly to Israel.

The Nicene Creed Please stand
Leader: Let us confess our faith as we say,
All: We believe in one God, the Father, the almighty, maker of heaven and earth,
of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only
Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from
Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the
Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he
came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became
incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was
crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried.
On the third day he rose again in accordance with the scriptures; he
ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will
come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will
have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who
proceeds from the Father. With the Father and the Son he is worshipped and
glorified. He has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy
catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the
forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of
the world to come. Amen.

supplication to you; and you have promised through your well-beloved Son
that when two or three are gathered together you will hear their requests:
Fulfill now, our desires and petitions as may be best for us; granting us in
this world knowledge of your truth, and in the age to come eternal life; for
you, Father, are good and loving, and we glorify you through your Son Jesus
Christ our Lord, in the Holy Spirit, now and forever. Amen.
Confession and Absolution Please kneel or be seated
Leader: Dear friends in Christ, God is steadfast in love and infinite in mercy; he welcomes
sinners and invites them to his table. Let us confess our sins, confident in God’s
forgiveness.
Leader: Most merciful God,
All: we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by
what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved
you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves.
We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus
Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us, that we may delight in your will,
and walk in your ways, to the glory of your name. Amen.

confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and keep you in eternal life; through
Jesus Christ our Lord.
People: Amen.

Offertory Hymn: #435 – “TAKE MY LIFE, AND LET IT BE” All sing
Take my life, and let it be consecrated, Lord, to thee;
take my moments and my days, let them flow in ceaseless praise.
Take my hands, and let them move at the impulse of thy love;
take my feet, and let them be swift and purposeful for thee.
Take my lips, and let them be filled with messages from thee;
take my intellect, and use every power as thou shalt choose.
Take my will, and make it thine; it shall be no longer mine;
take my heart, it is thine own; it shall be thy royal throne.
Take my love: my Lord, I pour at thy feet its treasure store;
take myself, and I will be ever, only, all for thee.

our Saviour and Lord.
All: Amen.
Priest: Blessed are you, gracious God, creator of heaven and earth; we give you thanks and
praise through Jesus Christ our Lord, because in the fellowship of your saints you
have given us a glorious pledge of the hope of your calling. Therefore we join our

Sanctus All sing
Please kneel or be seated
Priest: We give thanks to you, Lord our God, for the goodness and love you have made
known to us in creation; in calling Israel to be your people; in your Word spoken
through the prophets; and above all in the Word made flesh, Jesus your Son. For
in these last days you sent him to be incarnate from the Virgin Mary, to be the
Saviour and Redeemer of the world. In him, you have delivered us from evil,
and made us worthy to be in your presence. In him, you have brought us out of
error into truth, out of sin into righteousness, out of death into life. On the night
he was handed over to suffering and death, a death he freely accepted, our Lord
Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and
gave it to his disciples, and said, "Take, eat: this is my body which is given for
you. Do this for the remembrance of me." After supper he took the cup of wine;
and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, "Drink this, all of you:
this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the
forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me."
Therefore, Father, according to his command,
All: we remember his death; we proclaim his resurrection, we await his coming in glory;
Priest: and we offer our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to you, Lord of all;
presenting to you, from your creation, this bread and this wine. We pray you,
gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts, that they may be the
sacrament of the body of Christ and his blood of the new covenant.
Priest: Unite us to your Son in his sacrifice, that we, made acceptable in him, may be
sanctified by the Holy Spirit. In the fullness of time, reconcile all things in
Christ, and make them new, and bring us to that city of light where you dwell
with all your sons and daughters; through Jesus Christ our Lord, the firstborn
of all creation, the head of the Church, and the author of our salvation; by
whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honour
and glory are yours, almighty Father, now and for ever. All: Amen.

Communion Hymn: #270 – “LAMB OF GOD, TO THEE WE RAISE” All sing
Lamb of God, to thee we raise hymns of holy love and praise
for the saint and prophet born to be herald of the morn.
Like the morning star he rose, thine appearing to disclose;
like an ensign lifted high, he declared thy kingdom nigh.
Filled with grace and sanctity from his blest nativity,
he, the new Elias, came bearing zeal's most sacred flame.
Kinsman of the King divine, greatest of the prophets' line,
blest forerunner of the Lord, who his praises can record?
Mighty preacher, by whose word souls to penitence were stirred
those who long in sin had strayed then the call divine obeyed.
Make us, Lord, like him to be fearless witnesses for thee;
faithful unto death be found, and at last by thee be crowned.
Communion Hymn: #303 – “UNTO THY TEMPLE, LORD WE COME” All sing
Unto thy temple, Lord, we come with thankful hearts to worship thee,
and pray that this may be our home until we touch eternity;
the common home of rich and poor, of bond and free, and great and small;
large as thy love for evermore, and warm and bright and good to all.
And dwell thou with us in this place, thou and thy Christ, to guide and bless.
Here make the well–springs of thy grace like fountains in the wilderness.
May thy whole truth be spoken here, thy gospel light forever shine,
thy perfect love cast out all fear, and human life become divine.
Prayer after Communion
Priest: We give you thanks, almighty God, that you have refreshed us through the healing
power of this gift of life. In your mercy, strengthen us through this gift, in faith
toward you and in fervent love toward one another; for the sake of Jesus Christ
our Lord.
All: Amen. Please stand Priest: Glory to God
All: whose power working in us can do infinitely more than we can ask or imagine.
Glory to God from generation to generation, in the Church and in Christ Jesus
for ever and ever. Amen.

Recessional Hymn: #100 – “COMFORT, COMFORT YE MY PEOPLE” All sing
Comfort, comfort ye my people; speak ye peace: thus says your God.
Comfort those who sit in darkness bowed beneath oppression's load;
speak ye to Jerusalem of the peace that waits for them:
tell her that her sins I cover, and her warfare now is over.
Hark! The herald's voice is calling in the desert far and near,
calling us to new repentance since the reign of God is here.
Oh, the warning call obey! Now prepare for Christ a way;
let the valleys rise to meet him and the hills bow down to greet him.
Make ye straight what long was crooked; make the rougher places plain.
Let your hearts be true and humble as befits Messiah's reign.
For the glory of the Lord now o'er earth is shed abroad,
and all flesh shall see the token that God's Word is never broken.
Dismissal
Priest: Go forth in the name of Christ. Alleluia!
People: Thanks be to God. Alleluia!
