We ask exploratory questions: 1. Profile some livelihoods in the study area

2. Identify what are the common complaints of the people living in the area - residents of housing projects (Secondary)

3. Choose one indicator for resources – water and know complaints around it

4. Map the above to arrive at some observable pattern

BANGALORE - CONTEXT

• Contributes 60% OF Karnataka’s GDP

• Per capita income - Rs.9,200 (highest in India & than Mumbai)

• 400 of the Fortune 500 companies are here in one form or the other

PROJECTION: By 2030 Bangalore will be India’s fifth largest metro with - GDP $127 billion ; population 10.1 Mn. (McKinsey)

Location : Mahadevpura Assembly Constituency

Why : Earliest corporate to set up here was Wipro Ltd (2006)

The area was a village in Anekal taluk before 2000.

2. Post 2006 the land cover alters significantly every year until 2012

3. The blue region corresponds to large scale housing complexes – borewell depths in this area is about 1200 feet

OBSERVATIONS - 2

• Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs) maintain a list of complaints that they send BBMP. The issues are:

- water shortage & lack of municipal supply

- absence of footpath on Sarjapur road, Haralur road, - numerous speed breakers

- monkey menace !

DISCUSSION

1. Post 2006 infrastructure growth has increased

2. Interview of 5 individuals taken from the study area indicate a positive impact of the corporate in the locality

3. We have no data on number of schools, hospitals and population growth before and after 2006

4. The study identifies that infrastructure growth was faster between 2007-2012 than 2002-2006.

5. It identifies water stress in the area

6. It offers a starting point to conduct a more rigorous and focused research on magnitude and nature of corporate’s impact on community
