Question
WHAT IS UNIFIED COMMUNICATION? Unified communication is defined as a one platform - "a framework
on which applications can be run" - that connect communication
devices, such as voice, video, E-mail, instant messaging and
conferencing. It should be able to deliver the information
(integration) from one device to others in short time (speed).
FACTORSUnified Communication is…
A communications system that includes three or more of the following elements: voice, unified messaging, video, mobility, web/data collaboration, conferencing and presence management.
It allows an individual to send or receive a message on one medium and received on another.
It bridges the gap between telephony and computing to deliver real-time messaging, voice, presence, e-mail, and conferencing.
DIMENSIONS Integration - The Unified Communications (UC) platform must be
able to integrate to publish and receive information between the UC platform and many other communication data sources such as Email, IP Telephony, Digital Voicemail, and various text communication systems such as SMS or Instant Messaging. The platform must be a singular platform that allows simultaneous communication between these multiple different communication systems to allow a user to have a single point to access all information provided from these various platforms.
Speed - The UC platform must be able to send and receive information at high speeds and must maintain a reliable fault tolerant to the various communications platforms that the UC platform interfaces. A UC platform is an efficiency tool with a purpose of increasing productivity, the speed in which the platform can retrieve and publish information is directly related to how productive the tool can make the user.

CONCLUSION Unified Communication provides businesses with a unified
approach to integrate different communications needs and allow more efficient ways for individuals to collaborate
" The overall goal is to no longer focus strictly on the telephony portion of daily communications. The unification of all communication devices inside a single platform provides the mobility, presence, and contact capabilities that extend beyond the phone to all devices a person may use or have at their disposal" (Courtesy of Mark H.
